  • "Plus earn 5,000 bonus Qantas Points when you open a Caltex StarCard account by 30 June 2017"

  • I heard about this deal a while ago however bear in mind that they can do a credit check against your name.

  • Do you need to link the starcard account number by 30th June? If so might be too late, as it says it'll take up to 3 days to approve.

    • I think you only need to open the account today, the TC said be or become Qantas member only, not mentiong a deadline

  • +2

All for a low monthly fee of $2.95 per card

Cheap, but not exactly a free 5,000 points. Combined with a credit enquiry on your personal file (depending on how you apply), may not really be worth it for some.

Personally, I'm re-organising my credit cards after the recent RBA changes and the new tight ass earning rates. so I'm weary of anything impacting my credit score right now.

Still, looks like an OK deal if that's not an issue for you.

    • Agreed, probably not worth the hit for 5k when there are much larger credit card sign up bonuses regularly available. When you said "depending on how you apply", are you aware of a method that won't result in a credit check?

Not sure exactly, but i'm assumeing if you apply as a certain type of business (e.g. Pty Ltd Vs sole trader) the credit checkes will be different.

        • Thanks. Any luck in the search for a good points earning card that hasn't been throttled by the RBA changes?

I currently have Citi Signature, HSBC platinum, Coles MC, Amex Qantas Discovery and Amex Velocity Escape. All are useful for different purposes and fee free for life so can't complain too much. That said earn and redeem rates seem to have taken a hit across the board.

        • @lucjack: They've all been hit.

I have westpac Altitude Black for personal usage (I'm on a free account for life as x-staff) and have just opened up an ANZ Frequent Flyer Black card for my business purchases (but it's a personal credit card).

          Monthly I spend about..
$5k on the personal card, generally AMEX where possible.
$15-$20k on business purchases (which can't be done on AMEX most of the time). So the $1per point up to $7,500 and then $2 per point is about the best I can do, at least it's uncapped.

I have seen better options for opening a card under a business name, but all the banks want me to put down a security deposit for the full credit limit. Madness. So it depends on your situation.

        • @ChickenTalon:
Altitude Black fee for life sounds like a winner, I'm sure you more than earned it whilst working there! With all the reductions and caps, it's almost got to the stage where churning cards for signup bonuses will yield more rewards points.

It might be worth getting a second VISA or MC to use once you hit $7.5k of business expenses. HSBC platinum isn't capped (yet) and the annual fee is waived if you spend 6K a year if you apply 31st Aug.

        • @lucjack:

          HSBC: https://www.hsbc.com.au/1/2/personal/credit-cards/platinum-q…

Earn 1 Qantas Point3 per $1 spent up to $2,500 per statement period on eligible purchases made in Australia and overseas. Every $1 spent thereafter will earn 0.5 Qantas Points.

          looks pretty bad to me.

        • @ChickenTalon:
That must be new. I've got the standard rewards platinum not the Qantas one. Last time I checked it was still uncapped:

          https://www.hsbc.com.au/1/2/personal/credit-cards/platinum

FAQ's 3 & 6 still only mention an annual cap of 100K for rewards and 300K for Qantas:

          https://www.hsbc.com.au/1/2/rewards-plus/faqs#f5

        • @lucjack: Hmmm their "HSBC Premier World MasterCard" is actually pretty good. But I wonder how long it will last? I suspect it hasn't been updated for the new changes.

          https://www.hsbc.com.au/1/2/personal/credit-cards/premier-ca…
Qantas points 1=1, no cap, $99 fee

Can't find anything limiting the points earn. Could be a great card if it's left unchanged. Only issue I see is the xero feeds, doesn't look like they're available for HSBC in Australia. deal breaker for me

  • Only catch is you need your ABN ? lol there will be a credit check? what about monthly fees 2.95? how long you need to keep account open to get points? I think there is a Brisbane truck show promo code flowing around that might still be valid and gives you 20k qff points?
