MacBook Pro 15.4" 2.9GHz 512GB Space Grey $3,708 Delivered (10% off RRP) at JB Hi-Fi (Pricematch @ Officeworks $3,523.74)

540

JB HiFi have today started a 10% off Apple sale, bringing the price of the top of the line 2017 2.9ghz MacBook Pro down to $3688.20. But if you call up Officeworks (like I just did) they will price beat this price by 5%, bringing the total (including delivery) down to $3,523.74.

To get Officeworks to price beat, call them on 1300 633 423, and quote the model number MPTT2X.

Note: Delivery price may change depending on location, and it's required for Officeworks to add it to the total even if you pick up (so makes sense to just have it delivered).

Not a bad score for the EoFY. And if eBay manage to beat this in a sale before June 30 (unlikely as they only seem to have import models at the moment), you can always just return it to Officeworks :)

    Good work, thanks.

That's a very nice laptop, pity the cost is so high on the new models.

I'm holding onto my 2012 15" Pro here until it dies.

    • +4

Same here! Although it isn't dead yet, it has slowed down considerably in day to day usage. 8gb of RAM sounded plenty back in 2012, not so much now.

      • +4

I upgraded to SSD and 16GB ram myself and it still works quite well. :)
It's driving 3 external monitors (30" and 2 x 24") with the assistance of a DELL standalone USB 3.0 dock.

        • And I'm here using 4gb of RAM……..

        • +3

Yeah, mine is 2012 Macbook pro with 16G Ram and SSD, still works like a beast.

Comparing with latest macbook 2017, the compiling code time is 1 second slower :D so to me, not so much different in performance. haha

        • +2

and I'm here using 2gb of ram macbook air 11 mid 2011

        • +1

          @JackyQ: Ouch. Stay strong brother.

        • How do you find the dock? Are you running via Displayport or HDMI? I'm looking for a solution to run 2 or 3 monitors off my MBP

        • +1

@nafe: The dock is great. 30" connected to MacBook directly , other two via dock - HDMI. It's a DisplayLink based dock.

With the latest MacOS update the dock doesn't allow Word or Paralells to work in the HDMI monitors, doesn't affect me much. Hoping next update will fix this slight annoyance.

          Otherwise, very happy.

        • +1

          @malouphix:

          Cheers for that!

        • @JackyQ: I have one of these too (2G mba11) as well as a mbp13r. Have you put Sierra on your mba11 yet ?

Like other people have mentioned I'm still happy with a 2012 mbp13.. and given it has usb3 (and SSD).. i am not seeing any big advantage in moving to the current gen and having to go down the USB-C path..

        • @jason andrade: yes i always update to the lastest, itd a great laptop for browsing web.

    • +1

My 2012 macbook pro cant even run safari with more than 10 tabs open without slowing down.

      • +2

Upgrade the RAM and migrate to SSD.

        • Already have an SSD. RAM is stuck at 8gb.

        • +2

          @Orpheus: I'm sorry.

Might need a cleanup, 8GB ram and Safari is inoperatable with 10+ tabs - this is abnormal.

      • +2

Partly this is due to increased website memory use. Facebook will use 500MB without breaking much of a sweat

        • +2

          spot the web dev!

        • +1

The browser too. Safari is fairly light on CPU (and thus battery) and RAM, compared to something like Chrome. Each underlying renderer and JS engine performs differently and are built differently.

It's interesting how many Ozbargainers still hold on to their old MBPs. I myself also am holding on to a 2012 15" MBP with top of the line specs (i7 2.6ghz, 16gb RAM, SSD). How do your batteries fare? Mine's pretty much depleted and mainly sits on my desk as a 'portable desktop'. Also, I unfortunately also broke one of the keyboard keys. Replacing the battery will cost at least $250 and the keyboard $200. But for what I use it for, it doesn't justify upgrading just yet. Not ready to lose my good old 2012 MBP!

      • Uncertain as to the battery life, it sits on the corner of the desk acting as a desktop. It would be abysmal being 5 years old.

I've got a Macbook Air 13" as my work and portable computer, almost 3-years old still going strong.

        • +2

On MacOS Sierra you can hold down option key and click on the battery icon in the menu on top right. It says "Condition: normal" if your battery is still good. More info can be found here: https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT204054

        • @sniper: Thanks for the tip sniper.

          Condition: Normal

Must be good for another 5-years ;)

      • +2

I still use my 2008 Aluminium MacBook (before they were called MacBook Pro). Running well now after an SSD upgrade, the battery health is down below 50% now of the original capacity

      • The battery is generally good for a cycle life of around 300 cycles with very minor loss of capacity and then starts degrading fairly rapidly after that.

My MBP13R has done about 320 cycles and has about 85% of its original capacity - but 50% of the drop in capacity has come from the cycles after around 290ish. It's almost 5 years old… and I'm expecting by the time it gets to ~350 cycles I'll be lucky to have 50-60% of original capacity.

That translates to a working life of about 2.5-4 hours depending on what I am doing.

Even though apple don't specify it as a user replaceable part there's a whole bunch of vendors selling batteries and a really good ifixit manual on how to replace the battery yourself and it's not that hard..

A more modern MBP (e.g. the early 2015 models which you can still find for sale) would give you closer to 6-8h of usable battery I think..

a deal is a deal but this thing runs really, really hot

99c before fans kick in, just before thermal throttling. performs worse than last years model CPU-wise also.

    • Is that true? I have last years 2.7ghz model too - was planning to have this as an upgrade and pass mine on to my employee. This makes me wonder. The new MBP models are incredibly gorgeous to use however. So light and portable considering their power.

          2016 model had skylake CPUs

The 2017 model is now Kaby lake which is faster (slightly) and more efficient than both the 2015 and 2016 models.

        • +1

@KitchenSink: kaby is not any more power efficient, it's just a tweaked process for higher yields and no difference in IPC or any performance, except higher clockspeeds.

it's around 10% faster, and that puts the base model 2017 on par with the highest end model 2016. a well cooled 7920hq is just 14-15% faster than the 2015 model in cinebench single-core, and 24% faster in multi-core.

and that's assuming perfect comparison, and that software isn't optimized well for the older hardware.

        • @Droidyy: Yes I know I get what you're saying its just an optimized skylake..eveyrthing is pretty much the same in technical specifications with faster clock speeds but it is more efficient overall in general is what I was trying to get.

I wasn't getting into detail, but for example its got native support for h.265 codec on the iGPU. This saves on battery life with the iGPU handling the codec instead of the CPU. Skylake doesn't have that native support.

This improves the battery life for 4k for example - in editing, rendering, playback on a monitor with 4k etc. hence more efficient. Yes I know the iGPU is a separate component to the CPU, but its on the same chip.

        • +1

Interesting… I checked out the full article. https://www.notebookcheck.net/Apple-MacBook-Pro-15-2017-2-8-…

So they're basically saying that Apple has favoured quiet fans over pure CPU cooling in the 2016/17 models. So the CPU is around 90 degrees, which they allude to potentially shortening it's lifespan. But as this looks like the form-factor they're going with in future, it's unlikely to change (meaning it shouldn't prevent you from buying a new mac, because they're all like that).

On the good side, the max temp of the actual MacBook was ~44 degrees. So its not hot to touch so to speak.

        • so…I'm looking at 2016 2.9/512 machine for $2330 via HN sale. Compare this to JB having 2017 comp 3.1/512 similar specs except the newer processor $2718. Both with 8gb ram.

Which would you go for…considering the hardest I am pushing it is with ~200mb tiff in PS and that's becoming less and less these days.

Big difference in price and am getting lost in tech and speed details!!!

          Thanks

        • +1

@slipperypete: 2016 model from HN. Price difference doesn't warrant the differences in performance gains in specs offered at this stage by the 2017 model. Yes the 2017 is faster but barely noticeable.

        • @KitchenSink:

          Thanks for that KS

        • +1

@slipperypete: If you're planning to use the macbook unplugged (ie want better battery life) you may wish to consider the 2017 model. Also, if it matters to you, the resale value may be slightly better. I do also like that the graphics card is now 4GB.

        • @nelga:
          Thanks nelga

The question for me is whether it is worth the extra $400. Kind of knocks out the resale value and from what I have heard the battery life is similar unplugged if not using intensive processing. Really not sure whether the graphics card would be of benefit or not to me. I don't use it for games but do a reasonable amount of PS editing

        • @nelga: Do you have a source on improved batterylife? I've heard conflicting arguments on that…

  • +1
  • I did think about the OW price match, but as this was available online only I didn't think it would work. Bummer. Nice to know for next time though… Cheers OP.

Last time I called officeworks on price beat on a new mac.I was offered price beat and got the 5% off. I gave credit card details and the amount was withdrawn. But after 12 hours, since I did not get a invoice, I called back. After long wait in the phone the operator told, the order was rejected due to "security reason" and I had to wait couple of days to credit the amount to my credit card. If you want price beat go to a store . Don't do it over the phone

      • Good advice. I have one close to home too. Next time…

      • +3

If it helps, I did this just before making this post, and they have since sent me my invoice via email. They did put me on hold for a minute to double check everything was in order, but that was about it! They've said it should arrive tomorrow.

Money well spent in my personal experience.

Hardware and OS from the same manufacturer, it just works flawlessly every single time no $%#@ing around, ever.
5-years and no OS re-installs, no slow downs, no 'updates installing' when I start it up and want to get to work or play, free OS upgrades and this is from being a Windows user since Windows for Workgroups 3.11 back in 93'

On a 15" MBP Retina '2015 (bought used, for ~$1.2 last year). What user said above is correct- these things just work. EVERY time. Hate to admit it.

Only justifiable reason to buy new is for tax reasons IMO.

I really want to ask my accountant if I can get this (who I'm not seeing until next week)… How are Office works with returns if its' unopened?

    Thanks OP!

Grabbed the 512GB 13 inch model, decent saving of 14.5% :)

Receipt for anyone who needs it: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B4Nu7R3IZ5D8WHk5eFNic1Q4Vl…

  • Also I just read the Charging brick is twice as heavy as the previous model… Kind of annoying imo

  • I've recently purchased this from Apple for $3723.50.

I will call OfficeWorks tomorrow to confirm the price in this post and if it's correct, purchase from them and return my current one (still in the 14 days return window).

  • More than $3000 for a laptop with a 512GB HDD? Is his real life?

    • Plus dongles and adapters..

    • +1

A descent quality windows computer costs similar. On top of that not all models are available in Australia. I have my eyes on hp spectre x360 15" black model which was launched in the beginning of this year but not in Australia and the way big business work here I don't see it being introduced. It is pretty much normal price as macs come in par with top range business model laptops like dell xps, hp spectre, dell latitude etc.

      • I have my eye on the exact same laptop. Our only avenue to eBay and the seller(s) are known to be fraudulent :/ Worth the risk for $1900? Or The equivilant MacBook for $3500?

        • The MacBook Pro is far more powerful- - quad core, dedicated graphics and faster ssd. Again the hp on eBay for 1900 is from non- reliable seller. So in real world when sold by reputable sellers it will be close 3500. The other good one is Lenovo yoga 700 15" but only harvey Norman has it - not even ebay

        • @VAA: Meh, I just need it for coding ruby on rails and refurbed doesn't bother me too much.

        • @KLoNe: be careful when buying refurb from eBay as lots of them are dodgy - the eBay seller for hp is deals direct au and lots of negative reviews on whirlpool and eBay. Yes if ia cheaper one meets your needs then no point in spending more

        • @VAA: Yeah, that's a huge downside. There's legit HP refurb resellers selling without stylus on Amazon so I'm assuming the refurbs are legit and if it arrives DOA, PayPal will step in. Are you saying that the chances are great that there will be a hardware failure before the 1yr warranty period and Deals Direct will just try and ignore the buyer?

        • @KLoNe: yes. Whirlpool has a thread on them. As far as I know hp Australia won't repair it under warranty if purchased a US mode

Can't believe how much you fanboys pay for a laptop. That should get me about 100 fanboy negs. Thank you in advance. I take fanboy negs as a compliment .. :-) .. !!

    • Happy to be the first.

    • Your opinion is valid, of course. It's just that whenever you use the word "fanboy" you've pretty much lost the argument.

"Fanboy" has become the tech equivalent of "cuck".

Say why paying $4000 for a laptop that gives 5 years service and still has residual value afterwards is not a good investment, instead of "only iSheep buy this crap".

      • Residual value is a very true. GT prices are a prime examples.

  • Spoke to OW this morning. This is the item on their website: https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/SearchDisplay?searchTerm…

The CSR said to me that they have no stock and therefore won't price match.

Sounds wrong to me, but I didn't have the materials on hand to dispute that - anyone confirm or deny that that is their policy?

    • Got the same thing last evening. The guy said they don't price match for back orders.

    • Wow sorry to hear that, mine was just delivered now. If I remember correctly, they ask for your postcode at the start - I think to check local availability before they can price match. You might be able to try with a different postcode.

      • None of my local stores have stock… Does their website do price match? What are my options?

        • Unfortunately you have to price match via phone or in-store. You'd have better luck on phone as they can check multiple stores, but unfortunately it's likely limited to your general location.

        • @nelga:

Called OW just now and was told none of the stores in Victoria have stock and hence it's not possible to order from them.

  • they cancelled my order

  • So I called them this morning around 0905hrs. They said they had 2 in stock, so I have ordered one, my card has been charged. Pricematched to $3505 (they are allowing for click and collect). Not sure how they are cancelling orders….

    • collected it this morning

  • due to security reason your order has been cancelled

  • I went in store and price matched, no stock but they are ordering in. Doubt they will be able to cancel it due to security reasons as they charged my card in store and have my drivers licence details for warranty.

    • thats great. Mine went from today's delivery to cancelled order. I placed another order 5302 this time. See how it goes. There is a hold on the card. But they could cancel again.

    • I'm just wondering, did you get your order from Officeworks? I placed an order on the 30th and have still not received anything. Each time I've called them they've delayed it by 1 week.

  • just went in store. theyve lowered their price to 20c cheaper than JB so no 5% price beat available any more

  • for anyone who wants it cheaper… i ended up getting this one for $3499 via eBay with CRAZY or TREAT coupon (+ $45 cashback with cashrewards) and there are 4 left at the time of posting.

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Brand-NEW-Apple-MacBook-Pro-2017-…

i cant post this deal as it's not a top rated seller so… enjoy.

    • Is this actually an Australian seller? I'm tempted, but will it come from overseas and we will be charged GST?

      • Looks like its based in Australia abd Australian business

      • Yeah, I had a look and it seems their stock comes from Hong Kong. I just don't know if I could part with that much money without it being locally sourced so I can hold someone to account if anything goes wrong

        • they say they are aussie but almost certainly the stock is coming from HK

but im not worried. apple has the best hardware ive ever used plus apple has a global warranty - take any apple device into any apple store to get it fixed. the only issue might be trying to claim a statutory 2yr warranty with an ebay seller. maybe get applecare if you're that worried? i'm not.

  • +2

Just want to thank the OP for posting this deal. Got a base model 13" MacBook Pro from Officeworks CBD for $1622 tonight. That's a crazy good price. Especially, on the last day of the fin year - meaning that I will only pay about $800 for it. Thanks OP!

    • How come it's only $800 for you?

    • I'd love to know how to!

      • I don't think higherthanthestars knows how tax works.

  • why would you sell your soul for this shit. seriously.
