  • Looking at one of the 27" 5k iMac….is this a good price or just the usual?

Can one do better just by the usual haggling?

    • What's the config you are looking at and what's the price?

    • It's unlikely you'll get better than 10% off with haggling… the new 27" 5k iMacs are pretty sweet… sadly I can't take this offer up as I want a BTO config.

      • sorry I am new to Apple :P

So you mean they are the latest current model? Is there bargains to be had for the exiting model?

        • Possibly - you might be able to get better discounts on the older models if stores have them in stock still.

  • Apple really wants to shove the touchbar in all models. Been looking to replace my 5 year old MBP Retina, but hate the 15" touch bar version. If only the same config was available without it!

    • All models except for the non-touchbar models that they released right?

      • +1

They did not release a new non-touchbar model of the 15" MBP. The only version of the 15" without the touchbar is the unibody one from 2015 which is a bit underpowered (and more importantly for me, quite hefty to carry around everyday)

I have recently purchased the 15" w/ TB. I do not have any problem with it. Got used to the non-physical esc key pretty fast. In fact, I find it useful because I am able to set up custom app-specific shortcuts using BetterTouchTool.

      • Thanks, that sounds encouraging! I still don't like key travel, but guess I'll get used to it. What dongles would you recommend with it?

Thanks, that was very helpful. Looks like whatever I save in this deal will end up paying for adapters!

  • Have been waiting for this since the new MBP models came out. 15" Space Grey sorted. Cheers OP.

    • just curious….why would you get this over the 2016 model which is about a further 15% cheaper at Harvey Norman.

Just asking as I'm about to buy the 13" at HN sale which is $330 cheaper than JB's newer version. Only diff is the processor and graphic card which apply a real world increase in speed of about 10%

I'm up and down as to which to get….

      • 20% faster

        • yeah I read that but in real world testing it shows between 5-15% depending on what review I read and the type of testing

If it was 20% across the board then sure thing.

I do a fair amount of PS photo editing and am not really sure how much difference this would make, it appears to be minimal and nowadays not even sure whether I would be better having 16gb ram rather than a faster processor.

      • Can you please post the link for "further 15% cheaper" at HN? Thank you.

      • Yes, it's much faster with the Kaby Lake processors in them this time around. I already have a 27" Retina iMac which scores a pretty high Geekbench score and I now need to get portable for my freelance work. Now these new MacBook Pro models are getting results close to the iMac I've decided to get one.

Unless you want the extra power, getting one of the old models would be a good option as you'll get them at a lower price. Old stock = more discount.

Still bummed about the 16GB of RAM as I'm used to having 32, but apparently it's a limitation on the hardware.

        • what do you use it for? My only need for power is PS editing doing quite as lot of layer work with ~200mb tiff files. You think processor speed is critical?…these all have only 8gb. My machine now is 5 years old with 16gb and does reasonable well so not sure if this would be a step backward..or sideways. Only really upggrading as promised to pass this one on!!

        • @slipperypete: I'm a graphic designer and photographer, so CPU is pretty important. Especially with apps like Lightroom which really pushes levels at times. As far as RAM goes, I'm hoping 16GB is enough. This RAM is faster than my current set up, but quite often I can be working with up to a GB PS file for large images with lots of working layers.

Up until now I've been fine working from home on a desktop, but now feel the need for portability, thus the MBP. Still annoys me how you can't upgrade anything in them though. Even adding more RAM after a year or so can give your computer a second life. Now they seems like throw away items as everything is fixed from the start.

          @trappy76:

Hey thanks for the reply. I remember maybe 10 years ago saying RAM was more important but that is a long time in computer terms. Has made me think maybe I should go for the better processor and pay the extra. It may explain why LR is so slow for me…I put it down to RAM as was using pretty much the full 16gb

I read the other day that more RAM was preferable for video editing which I don't do but that 16 should be enough for PS and layers. As you said though, it kind of sux how they are limited….probably to get you to buy the base unit Mac!!!

        • +1

@slipperypete: Well I think this MBP will be much faster with LR due to the SSD as well. My iMac currently has a Fusion Drive, so most the time LR would be running on a standard drive which would slow it down. One other thing I've started doing is building 1:1 previews which saves LR having to load each image as you click on it. Uses more HD space and will take a while to generate if you have a few hundred pics.
My issue with going to the laptop is replacing the screen. I love my Retina 5K 27" screen. I settled for the LG 27UD88 which I managed to score cheap last week during the 15% off eBay sales. It runs off USB-C too which is a bonus. Can't wait to get this all set up now!

  • Looking at getting a MacBook but am not sure which one to get. Just need it for general usage (i.e. surfing the web, word processing etc) Not for anything labour intensive like gaming. Any suggestions as have never used MacBooks before. Am looking around the $1,500 mark as I can see that's what they seem to go for minus the top end models. Thanks in advance.

For that coin, you will be choosing between a MacBook Air and a MacBook. The newly released MacBook has an enhanced screen over and above the superior screen it had before. If you are using the primary screen mostly then this is the way to go. Just be prepared to buy adapters for anything you want to attach to the MacBook because it only has a USB-C port. The MacBook Air, on the other hand, has a moderately OK screen but nowhere near as nice, but has ports so you can connect up various peripherals. The MacBook also has a different keyboard mechanism to the Air.

So, MacBook - superior screen, but costly and bulky adapters required to attach anything.
MacBook Air - inferior screen, but has some inbuilt peripheral ports.

Whoops, forgot to mention the Air has a 13" screen, while the MacBook has a 12" screen.
