  • So I thought I can count me lucky. I set the alarm on 11:55, watch the screen in 2 minutes, only to forgot to get back at 12:00. I only remembered it at 12:05, thought it was too late, but tried anyway. Fortunately, the register link has been changed to the PayPal server, and I go through it no sweat. Just about a minute and everything's done.

Now need to figure out what to buy with my $50 (cash back) :)

    :( upset
i waited and smashed this so many times
first i tried with my pc browser but that didn't seem to take me to a form
then i tried on my phone's browser and that took me to the form
filled it in and submitted - error
    back - submit - error
tried it on pc, submitted - error
    kept trying till 12:08 -
my registration was accepted but only into the $1000 draw
    :(

  • Anyone have issues with the confirmation page?

I registered but it doesn't display my ebay ID of paypal address.

When I tried again, it said my details were already registered.

    • Yeah happened to me too. Guess we'll have to wait and see!

    • wait for the confirmation email.

      • Was one meant to be sent? I haven't received one yet.

        • Hmmmm. I'm not sure now. I just read someone commented on getting one. I haven't got it either.

          • @shopbot: I remember someone getting an email about the promotion but I don't remember someone getting a confirmation email.

It may be possible to try reregistering and see if it says you've already registered.

    • +1

My details were missing on the congratulations screen. I hit refresh and they showed up.

      • Cheers. Went back in my browser history and re-loaded the accepted page.

Details came up, I guess I'm in.

  • +4

    This is CRAP

  • waited to register by putting an alram, when the countdown said 'now registration open' hit the button and entered my details then says SORRY registration failed but you did enter the lucky draw…5000 registration ended within few minutes? totally a scam, hate it!

    • +3

You really thought it would take a while to fill 5000 spots?

I fully expected them to be gone in no time.

    • +2

you must be dellusional if you think 5000spots wouldn't end in a few minutes.

    • Hi lessismore8848,

there've been deals like this before … can't remember off the top of my head … but they go really, really quickly.

Clearing 5000 in a matter of minutes, when millions have been notified, doesn't seem too hard to do for something large like eBay. On this site alone we had over 8000 click throughs on that link.

Then we are but one of many other sites where people are looking at bargain lists.

Then there's everyone else on Paypal too.

you want a medal now cheap ass?

    • WTF, it's no fair.

    • +2

too funny, can't believe people have negged you!

      • Lol, 11 accounts when some couldn't even get 1?!? I realise some if those negs were cos of the joke, but cmon people lol

    • +11

      Hi five!
got it for all my 4989 accounts! yay!

  • Damnit, it went to the confirmation page with my email etc, I said it was all correct and I hit confirm, then it just took me back to the registration page, by the time I got through again they were all gone…..

    • exactly what happened to me at 12:01
tried again at 12:06 all gone

  • +1

Now wait for the next round of disapointment, as far as I can see the T&C's say you "may" be eligible to get the 50% cash back…. It all looks suspect to me…. Anything Ebay/Paypal is usually a con job.

  • just received confirmation :)

    • was that via email?

      and so:

      1. are we allowed to make purchases from ebay international(aus’n+non ausn)
      2. is it 50% off the total bill or does it only apply for one single purchase
      3. Must it be purchased through a mobile?(Will an iPod touch with wifi be eligible for this deal)?

      Thanks

      • not really a confirmation
        Dear isshdee,

Don't miss out on Mobile Happy Hour Friday 24 September 12-1pm.

Here's a toast to our friends at PayPal, for starting Mobile Happy Hour. Use your mobile to buy an item on eBay.com.au and also pay with PayPal and they'll refund half the purchase price, up to the value of $50, including shipping.

To take part in Mobile Happy Hour, be among the first 5,000 to register. Registrations start NOW and close 12 noon Thursday 23 September AEST.
Make it quick, only the first 5,000 registrants will get to experience the Mobile Happy Hour rush!

If you don't make it into the first 5,000 registrants, don't worry, you still go in the draw to win one of five $1,000 PayPal credits that will be paid to your account.

        • er, it's not a confirmation … you received an advert about the offer very late

        • lol

        1. I'm interested in the answer too (only if i got in)
        2. I think 1 purchase but I may be wrong
        3. Yes, totally fine
  • +1

I got a server error every time I tried to submit (from 12:01pm AEST), when it finally worked I got the message that I had missed out on registering for the happy hour.

    Way to go ebay/paypal.

  • +3

Tried from the very first moment that the countdown said it was available. Must have filled out and submitted the form 25 times, only to get errors or just the same registration page again. When it finally worked I "wasn't accepted".

  • we can buy anywhere as long as aus ebay right?

half price magic trackpad looks good :D

  • All 5000 taken by 12:15pm wednesday

    • +2

I thought they were gone by 12:08PM.

      • +2

agreed with jump22. Could have been alot earlier if it wasn't for the server crashes.

        • I think I got mine about 12:10pm

On the other hand, someone in WA reported that the countdown was 2 hours off, so they suspect the timer was looking at our PC's clock and not the actual kick off times :S

  • I've got a congratulation, does that mean I'm in for the $50 cashback?

    • +1

      yes

      • Thanks for the reply. Now I have to make a hard choice, what to buy!

    • +2

no, it means they congratulate you for being a cheap ass :D duhhhh of course you're in

      • Who could pass a free $50?! Even Rupert Murdoch wouldn't do that! LOL
To my credit I first made sure they won't sell the information! (-:

  • Worked in Chrome for me, after clicking "Registration is now open" about a dozen times :)

  • +5

To everyone complaining about the server, did you really expect it to be a smooth process?

In excess of 5,000 people trying to connect to a server simultaneously is going to lead to crashing.

This was an Australia wide deal, not something offered to the few thousand oz bargain members, the load on the servers would have been massive.

    • Which should have been anticipated. With the resources ebay/paypal have, they shouldn't have had a problem handling the traffic.

      • -1

The traffic was not the issue.
A database server can only handle so many simultaneous connections and only serve data at the speed it can read the hard drives.

An massive inflow of traffic to the database ever was asking to it receive and send more data that the disk drives could possibly handle. That is why people saw the pages with red error text.

The errors everyone saw had nothing to do with the bandwidth as seen all to often on COTD, it was the database sever which was the issue.

I said this below but will add it here too
Paypal has 3 million registered Australian users.
This offer was open to every one of them.

If only 1% of users knew about the deal and tried to register that is 30,000 people registering at once.

kinda like how paypal can’t handle hundreds of thousands of payments on its servers at the same time… oh wait…

They are all designed to handle the load 24*7 at a great cost.
Have you ever seen a google server building? It is massive.

Why would paypal want to spend tens of thousands of dollars to buy some servers to power an offer limited to 5000 applicants.
            What would it achieve?

People could register faster and the deal would expire faster. You would still be here complaining that you missed out.

Hundreds of thousands, dont be an idiot.
There are currently 320 members online now and SOME are commenting about the deal and the ozbargain server is struggling to cope.

Several hundred users complaining on OzBargain is already sending my server into panic. No wonder PayPal's boxes were half-dead.

    • True, it wasn't like an overloaded server.

With that, you'd be sitting waiting ages before the error message finally came back, if ever.

With this, the error messages came back quickly.

So … it probably wasn't the server that was the problem.

lol the ebay email telling people about the happy hour came at 12:11, and it was finished by then

    • Yeah - great one fleabay! We all will get that one I bet….

    • I got mine at 10:09. Registered on a mobile on the move at around 12:04…

      • You didn't need to use a mobile to register. Hopefully I won't need one to buy my item.

        • Yeah didn't need a mobile. I just happened to be on the move. Just saying that, managed to get in even with shoddy 3G.

  • Can you but stuff from international sellers?…all it states is that u purchase from ebay.com.au……

  • 11:43am Adelaide time : "Sorry, you haven't been accepted into Happy Hour".
I do not want to swear so I'll just say that it is not fair.

It does not look right to me.
I will never bother wasting my time on "deals" like this one.

    • … it isn't suspicious

But you are right that it's not easy

  • Hm, I registered at 12.04 and it went through, refreshed and presented me with another blank form. I waited for some confirmation, then re-registered at 12.08 and missed out. I wonder if the earlier one went through as I didn't get the acceptance page or anything else.

    Worth a try.

  • Do we get a confirmation email or anything? I wanna make sure I put my details in right so I don't buy something and then their like 'You didnt register'…

    • All your details were confirmed to you before you submitted to the offer and then again when your submission was confirmed.

      • I was so hypo and in such a rush that I didn't really check them.
But I turned my laptop into 'work offline' mode, went to my history and checked it-all good!
        YAY!!!

    • still waiting on a confirmation about intl sellers. no one has confirmed yet

      • It is simple.

Read point 1 of the terms and conditions

      • Errr - why do you need confirmation of anything? Can't you read point 1 that is posted above?

If it is listed on ebay.com.au and you buy it from ebay.com.au… honestly, it couldn't be any plainer.

  • +2

for those that mistyped your username why not just change your username?

    • yeh ended up making a new account lol

    • Ebay was kind enough to fixed my username to match with my typo.
Thanks again for your quick thinking. Now I wonder whether what I just did is legitimate. Don't want them to come back and say sorry, but we can't give you the $50 for this reason.

I am interested to hear this from Ebay or Paypal.

  • Did you all successful participants received your confirmation email? cause I've got the congratulation page but no email yet!

    • same here

    • Same here. Now I don't know if I should buy something.

Do we have to pay for the item within the hour?

    • +2

You have to buy and pay for the item between 12:00 noon and 1:00pm FRIDAY 24th.

It stuns me how many people can type a post here, but cannot read! LOL

All those who missed out blame the greedy people who registered multiple times with different accounts.

    I was successful.

But then I just realised, my flight to Sydney arrives at 1:05pm on Friday. I'll be in the air during the freaking happy hour. WHAT A FAIL!!! Grrrr!!
