  • Seems like a good deal.
I got terribly excited as I thought they were all from Australia but it's all departing Singapore

They are both ways from Cairns and Darwin
      E.g
Cairns to Singapore 29,000KF business class
      Also Darwin.

      List of points and routes

      http://www.singaporeair.com/en_UK/sg/plan-travel/promotions/…

    • Thats right, its only a good deal if departing from Cairns, Darwin or Singapore.
Otherwise if departiing from Capital Cities, there is no discount to avail of, as the points cost from AU capital cities to Singapore, is the same for most SE Asian destinations.

  • Taxes for Silkair redemptions are usually pretty bad I think.. you often can buy a whole ticket on an LCC for half the price

SQ recently changed their award chart. They removed the 15% discount and removed all fuel surcharges.

Not sure if this is the same for MI, but would be surprised if SQ didn't apply it to MI as well.

      • yep taxes are 1/5 of stuff all now

    • +1

PointHacks says taxes are ~$90 in their article on these fares from this morning, with no fuel surcharges. Seems reasonable?

  • Can I use velocity points for this?

    • +1

Yes, although it'll be a 35% reduction of points when converting from Velocity to Krisflyer

      • +2

It's actually just 26% reduction of points. It's transferred at a 1:1.35 rate.

        • How is it a 26% reduction? If you convert 1000 Velocity Points it will be 650 when going to Krisflyer.

        • +3

          @nightelves:

Incorrect. It will be 740-ish (not sure which way it rounds). It doesnt take a 35% cut of your velocity points, it requires 1.35 velocity for each 1.00 krisflyer.

          1000 / 1.35 = 740.74

        • @tizey:

Oh ok got it. That is actually not bad. Thanks!

    • I'd say you'd need to transfer VA to KF to get the 50% off

The silk air planes are nothing to write home about though. Flew them 2 months ago from Singapore. For business class, no screen in front of seat, got given a tablet with 1 movie (London has fallen), movie would pause every 10 seconds without fail, seat doesn't recline much, seat feels more like a couch than an airplane seat.

    • They are only short flights. So of course its not going to be the fancy flat bed seats like an A350/380 and the other large planes. Its the same in australia for domestic.

    • +3

ditto. silk air business class is not worth a penny.

    • Geek that's bad for business class. Especially if it was semi long haul

    • +1

Agreed. Recently flew Singapore to Hyderabad business class and it was appalling for business class. Barely premium economy level.

  • For some reason SilkAir is pretty bad, in terms of the plane furnishings, service and meals. Nothing like Singapore Airlines at all. I know it's supposed to be a regional airline but feels more like a budget airline, and not even a good one at that.
