Are there any deals on headphones under or around $100?

    • +1

There's a pretty good deal on Bose Soundtrue II atm. Think they come out to $118.75 after 5% discount. They're pretty good value for money.

      • They are for Apple devices only aren't they?

        • +1

That's seems to be the case, my bad.

        • @doweyy: no worries

        • +6

Android version $129 delivered from Myer with Anniversary Coupon

        • They have a 3.5 mm socket. The Apple compatibility part seems to just be the buttons on the cable.

          Per the Cnet review:

You can use the microphone to make calls just fine with any phone, but some of the remotes features, such as the volume controls, only work with compatible devices.

      • What is the sound quality like? Is it comparable to QC35?

        • Deleted- wrong section

        • @irate: Thanks. I already have the QC35. That's why I am wondering if the sound quality of sound true II is comparable to QC35. Looks like it is not.

        • Read for yourself:

          https://www.whathifi.com/sony/mdr-1000x/review

I'm somewhat of an audiophile & think they sound fantastic. I use them at work most days.

          A quote from a previous MDR-1000X listing
          " cheapo999 on 02/06/2017 - 10:42

I have been using MDR-1000X for quite some time and I can say the price is worth it. Comparing this to my mate QC35, Sony wins on sound quality, noise cancelling and features. However for comfort to use, the lighter Bose is better. Overall, the extra cost, $80 in my case, is justified."

Personally have the QC35 and Sony MDR-1RNC (wired NC). In comparison, the Sony NC is far far superior, it's actually pretty hard to go from the Sony to the Bose. In a similar way, I find the sound quality to be far superior on the Sony's and would rate myself as an audiophile with a range of music and (too many) earphones/headphones. The advantage of the QC35 is that it is more comfortable on the ears. Hope that helps

        • @Dbuiz: I have the MDR-1RNC too and I share the same view as yours but wasn't sure! Thanks for validating my view on QC35 vs MDR-1RNC.

        • @ispace: Thanks guys. What I am really asking is whether the sound quality of Bose Soundtrue II is comparable to QC35. MDR1000X should be better than those two for sure.

    • I've heard the SOL Tracks BT headphones were good value.

I personally went with the AKG Y50BT recently. Waiting for it to arrive from the US. I have heard only good things about the AKGs, so looking forward to it. Got it for a little over $100 AUD including delivery.

Ditto. No issues whatsoever. Very happy with mine.

  • +4

Use "CRACKA20" at your own risk with these headphones ;)

    • -1

      Why is that ?

      • Only joking because people had issues with them breaking (see further down).
No risk with the voucher :)

  • Argh, good price but do I risk it and wait to see if a better EOFY deal comes up? Please help!

    • +1

You could wait till tonight to see if there's another 15% off storewide code and get these but they're from Hong Kong. I doubt you'll find a cheaper local price before EOFY, but it's possible. Sony themselves might drop the price.

      • +2

Nah, I would rather spend a bit more $$ and support an Aussie business. I'm just worried I'll buy these and an amazing deal will come up next week :/

        • Yeah it might happen :( I really couldn't tell you but knowing the upcoming sales at eBay there might be a deal that overtakes this.. It's really hard to tell.

        • @doweyy:

Knowing my luck, it will get more expensive and I need it before mid July so I can TRS claim it.

        • +1

          @nurries:

I'd definitely jump on this deal then, TRS brings these down to $394.94 and I think that's the cheapest you'll find to be honest.

        • @doweyy:

I'll have to have a think, it's not a small purchase for a student haha

        • @nurries:

Haha I'm a student too and it took a very long time to get QC35's because I was waiting for a price drop, ended up getting a killer deal on them over xmas a`nd it was worth the wait. But in your time frame this seems to be the best deal.

        • @doweyy:

Yeh, it definitely is a great deal. But it was also the same price a couple weeks ago, so I'm thinking of risking it and waiting til mid June. But then if I get screwed over a better deal doesn't come along, I'll miss out on TRS which will probably put me in the same boat.

        • @nightelves:

I'm a bit confused at what you're trying to say?

        • @nurries:

Oh lol just realised you were the one asking him. Oh the blunder. =D

        • @nightelves:

Yeh, hahah. I'm still looking for someone if you also get that benefit? :)

        • @nurries:

so that person couldn't get you the deal?

        • @nightelves:

          Looks like a no, sadly.

        • @nurries:

So why did you haveto PM him/her? Kinda weird

        • @nightelves:

No idea, all I know is that it just didn't work for them. I'll probably post an ad in the classifieds looking for someone with the same benefits.

  • Rule #1: Don't buy a grey import on any item with an inherent flaw. You are likely to require warranty support and then be fairly mad at yourself.

    • What is the inherent flaw with these headphones?

      • +1

There have been concerns about flimsy construction for these headphones but the rep of ATA has claimed they haven't heard any issues recently. VidePro offer a 12 month warranty just in case.

        • I use and abuse mine. Not had such a flaw. I think they're really well put together.

        • @rorymeister: your average user's headphones typically don't physically break until warranty ends. have tried Creative ZxR, Parrot zik 2, Sony MDR-XB950BT and Sennheiser PXC 250-II. you can abuse them during the warranty period and not see a problem. the issue arises when the construction material has aged past warranty. this is from my own experience, and I take good care of my headphones.

        • @shuckeru:

I think you're meaning to say that they're engineered and designed in such a way that they'll last until warranty expires.

Possibly. My Samsung TV developed lines down the screen a week after Warranty expired. Luckily we have Australian Consumer Guarantees.

    • Are videopro a grey import site? I recently bought QC35 from them and it says australian stock?

But yeah I must say I was going to get the mdr 1000x until I read about issues with it. The Bose are very sturdy so I went with them. Even if the 1000x don't all break easily I didn't want to have to worry about that at all. Shame though - the 1000x do sound better, though when I compared them in store the difference wasn't massive. The QC35 were also more comfortable and felt more premium, despite lesser sound.

    • +2

VideoPro is an Australian store and they sell official local stock. They have brick & mortar stores in QLD.

  • This is a great headphone with great sound quality. However if you wear glasses, it will get uncomfortable after a few hours.
If your work has partner benefit with Sony you can get them for 420.

    • Does your work have partner benefits?

      • yes its 40% of RRP

VideoPro is allegedly AU stock. Previous discussions mentioned whether cheaper deals may come up and I was advising against non AU for this item.

    • Thank you for quoting! One really should read this before the purchase LOL. Now more people are experiencing the same issue. The Chinese group for protecting their rights now consists 190 people who suffer the problem.

      • Hi Mate,

Recently discovered the crack in my MDR1000x's and would like to attempt to get a replacement from Sony.

Just wondering if you had a copy/screenshot of the letter that Sony sent regarding getting a replacement sent? I can't seem to find it online.

        • I think you can just contact Sony. Should not be a problem in Australia. Sony did not give the mail itself. That's the "smart" thing they do. They talk through a reseller.

  • +4

i will stick with my QC35..!!

    • Comfort wise these are way better. SQ on Sony is better though.

    • So will I, just posting for others :)

  • Wish I had gotten these over my sennheiser momentums.

    • I don't. The momentum 2.0 wireless have one the best build qualities with premium materials as well as sound quality that betters the Bose QC35. Having said that, I got mine for <$320 after TRS, so it was a good buy imo.

      • +1

I wrote up something in a previous thread but the summary would be:
If sound quality matters then Momentum 2.0!
If ANC matters and middle duration travel then Sony.
If ANC matters and long duration travel then QC35. The comfort of them is way ahead of the other two.

I am keeping momentum 2.0. I'll sacrifice some ANC for sound quality and comfort.

The one thing I am not overly impressed about on Momentum 2.0 is the ANC cracking, I think it's louder than on QC35 and Sony. (Can only hear it when nothing is playing)

        • How is your noise cancelling when nothing is playing? Things are still very audible around me with my momentums which was different when I tried a demo 1000x and its like everything around me was nearly cut out entirely. Im just wondering If I have faulty noise cancelling or if its meant to be that way.

        • @ruddiger7:

Its not as good as Sony or QC35. Good description was from my partner, she said that when she was listening to Momentums she could tell I was talking but with Sony she couldn't.

The sacrifice is ANC vs sound quality. ANC will kill some sound quality so the better the ANC the worse the sound. I say that because ANC actively nullifies some audio frequencies.

I've used QC35s before purely as sound blocking device, no music and that was great. I don't think Momentums will be as good for that.

    • Really? What do you think is better?

I bought momentum 2.0 wireless over ear and these. After 10min of listening to both I put these up for sale. The trade I saw was ANC vs sound. ANC better on Sony, sound WAY better on Momentums. I went for sound.

That was with cable plugged in. Majority of my travel listening is with cable so I didn't spend much time comparing Bluetooth.

      • Does the cable improve noise cancellation or only sound quality or both? I am very happy with the sound quality - but not so much the noise cancellation. Like the hum of my PC is still audible over them at times when no music is playing but still turned on. Not sure if that is meant to happen or not.
Edit: whoops saw I replied to you twice.

        • You are right. Their ANC is not as good as Sony or QC35. If you use them primarily for sound blocking when nothing is playing then go for QC35 or Sony. Its a balancing act between ANC and sound, and what you need to use them for.

      • i use my headphones mostly in bluetooth mode so when i tried the momentums i was sorely disappointed in both sound quality and ANC. they sounded like they were worth only half its asking price. currently looking at Plantronics Back beat pro 2's those… are cheaper and have wider and fuller soundstage on both cable and bluetooth. your mileage may vary. but if you're a bluetooth user like me… don't go for momentums. that's wasting your money.

        • Did you have aptx on?

        • @g1: That's assuming that an Android device was used as the source, in which case AptX would have been automatically selected.

        • @elektron:

Yes, I am wondering if aptx was used or standard Bluetooth.

        • There's no such thing as "standard Bluetooth", except for SBC. For example, iOS uses AAC that Sony also support, which is inferior to AptX but is good enough for most common listening, such as the lossy streaming services set at the highest quality.

        • @elektron:
          To simplify my question:
          Was aptx used?
          Yes or no?

        • @g1:

          aptx was on.

        • @shuckeru:
          Hmm k.. Never heard Plantronics…

  • +3

I've had the headphone for more than 2 months now, I just checked the headphone and I don't see any sign of crack on the plastic.

  • Coincidentally Rting.com has just posted a review for the Sony MDR-1000X.
Very comprehensive and honest review channel.
    https://youtu.be/xwHvqDG-Jac
Overall I'm disappointed that they are using touch controls and the noise cancelling turns off after 5 minutes when not connected with Bluetooth.
Also apparently the treble is muddied by the bass.

    • +1

The bass is too much for me on these, it overpowers everything else on tracks that have a lot of bass. And I found the mids to be lacking in comparison to momentum 2.0!

  • Bought the Beoplay H4 during the ebay 15% off sale. No regrets!

  • +2

This is a great price. Purchased these last Christmas, and by far the best money I have spent on NC headphones. They are godsend on longer flights, and I use them daily in the office. Contrary to my first impressions, the touch controls work fine and you get used to them. They work wireless or wired, and the best thing is their size and comfort (I don't feel like they are squeezing my brain, and eyes out when wearing them for long periods at a time). Sound is excellent, and they're not bass-y as some others I tried (I prefer this), however bass and miss are excellent. The NC can be recalibrated each time for different environments (planes, bus, offices) and from experience works very well. I'd recommend these at this price.

    • Sounds good! Do you take a train into work? Was looking to use one of these on the train.

  • Feels a bit rude that it's back up on sale but I haven't received mine from the last sale because they had stocking issues with Sony.

  • Anyone know which mobile device support the so called "High quality wireless audio with LDAC"? Only Sony?

    • +1

All flagship Xperia phones starting with Z3+/Z4 and even some recent mid-range ones, such as the Xperia X, or any Sony Walkman from the last couple of years, e.g. NW-A15 or later.

Keep in mind that the next version of Android (8.0 aka Android 0) will have native LDAC support built-in, so this headphone is future-roof in that regard.

I've used the LDAC codec for a couple of years now and can confirm that you won't be able to hear the difference vs 320kbps and especially near-lossless AptX on most material, such as highly compressed modern pop/rock/r'n'b.

However, if you listen to a lot of complex acoustic recordings with high dynamic range, such as classical or some jazz, and have access to hi-res recordings, then you might appreciate having it.

      • Thanks. I think it is not worth to switch mobile phone just for the LDAC. If I really want true HI-FI experience, I would probably invest in wired headphones.

        • I agree and wouldn't switch for that reason alone but it was a factor in my decision, especially since I already had a few LDAC devices, including Sony speakers. Anyway, as I said, in about a year from now, any new Android phone (providing they have the latest OS version) will have LDAC.

        • @elektron:Apple excluded?

        • @maxdba: Yes…at least until Apple adopt Android as their OS :-)

        • +1

@maxdba: By the way, the thing about Apple is that they don't like universal or open source standards, such as AptX, FLAC or even the good old MP3, as it would make it harder for them to keep people locked within their proprietary ecosystem. For any standard that gains relatively wide acceptance, they develop their own proprietary one - e.g. AAC, ALAC etc. The ironic thing is that Google and Android manufacturers include support these as well as many others. Most Sony wireless headphones (including the MDR-1000X) also include native AAC support, alongside AptX, LDAC and the low-res SBC.

For me, that alone would be reason enough to ditch iOS when choosing a new phone. Other reasons why I think even a cheaper Android makes a better smartphone than an iPhone are:

This is just off the top of my head, without having done a detailed comparison - there are probably others (the Android phone is the ZTE Chat 4G/Blade D):

          • Expandable storage (to be fair, the $1,400 iPhone is the 128GB model but the 16GB model is a joke)
          • Can be used as USB storage
          • Can cast photos, videos, YouTube directly to smart TV's
          • Send photos / music to other devices via bluetooth (PC's / phones / tablets) when internet is unavailable
          • Much more customizable

And these are just off the top of my head.

        • @elektron: You can still cast youtube to smart TV but not as convenient as the Android device. The NFC function is locked by apple, this is very inconvenient when I want to connect my cameras that support NFC and wifi.

  • -2

    mdr c'est un bon prix.

  • Given the price, I suppose these are better than the Bose QC35s?

    • According to my research they are better overall sound wise and pretty much on par for ANC.

    • Got both. Liked the qc35 for some reason.mperhaps because I'm no audiophile and used to the Bose??

    • Not necessarily. For long distance travel I think QC35 are better overall. Some of that is personal preference in the sound signature and some of it is in comfort of wearing headphones. Also, QC35 have a better designed travel case.

    • Are we going to have this argument again…

Heh, check out the other ozbargain posts for QC35s and their arguments for both.

  • I have a Sennheiser PXC 550, and love it.
Personal opinion- better sound quality than Bose and very comfortable, with in-ear controls.
Very good ANC. A bit pricey.
    Have not tried the Sony.
