wish the govt would bloody fix the appallingly underwhelming public dental service. It's ridiculous it is the only part of your body that you cant (realistically) have treated without private health insurance. Bloody disgrace.

Dental is free for 18 yrs and under in Australia. Dental is seen as more of a preventative treatment so this policy makes sense. It penalizes those who do not look after their teeth once they reach legal adult age.

      • A lot of medical conditions come about as a result of negligence, risk taking or carelessness, but they're covered…

      • really? I had to spend $2,500 to have 4 wisdom teeth removed recently, is that because i didn't look after my teeth? Don't be stupid man, of course people develop problems after the age of 18. It was only a few days ago Bob Katter was saying how the aged in his electorate had resorted to pulling their own teeth out. The waiting list is THIRTY YEARS in some areas of australia, stop defending the status quo - it is reprehensible.

Just do what my mate did.

Booked the earliest flight to Singapore, enjoy cheap food then remove teeth. Still saved him a few hundred dollars doing so and got himself a nice little retreat too :\

Are you willing to pay higher taxes to cover the dental work? Or otherwise nominate an area of government spending which can be cut and where that cut won't raise complaints and protests? It's easy to say they should fix it. Problem is no one really wants to foot the bill.

      • +1

        Easy

        tax the miners more
        tax the rich more
        cap golden handshakes
tax bankers more… everyone hates bankers, not many would argue with that. And how sick are people of CEO's losing the company millions and getting multi-million dollar handshakes?

This would never happen, but that would be my suggestion. I'd sleep easier knowing that the lower class in australia didnt have to tear their own teeth at, as opposed so some rich banker having to settle for 5 rolls royce's instead of 6.

Heh, those are all Greens policies.. no wonder i voted Green!

But anyway let's not get into a political argument… anyone who opposes public dental care is quite obviously a conservative of significant proportions.

      • Convert some of those excess, yet to be completed school halls (which will only take away needed revenue from existing scout, community and church halls, etc anyway) into CPI-price indexed dental clinics perhaps? ;-)

      • I am more than willing to pay higher taxes if it will better fund public health. I don't even earn all that much.

        • +1

Problem is much of the time it gets pocketed and is not effectively spent to deliver the intended outcome for those in need.

  • how do u know if u need a filling b4 checkup?

    • +2

If you've been stocking up on those sweet sweet Sweet deals here, you're guaranteed to have something.

Besides, you get to talk to Jessica, those white teeth could blind someone!

I'm putting forward a class-action lawsuit against COTD and 1-Day, for selling cheap imported lollies that ruined my teeth. This will include all dental fees covered for those at OzBargain who're backing me.

please email me if you would like to take part in this.

      • I have :/. I must confess i love Mentos… lol

  • "*One preventative filling (worth up to $150)"

In that case why not drill and fill all your teeth?? Weird

    • even tho its called preventative surely its only for teeth that show some signs of issue later on or something? I mean u wouldnt drill into perfectly healthy teeth, im assuming? lol.. i dunno//.

    • When teeth rot, the rotten area needs to be ground away and filled. You do this to prevent the rot eating all the way through to your root. If it eats down to the nerve, you've got a problem (root canal / extraction).

    • Yes, sounds strange. Aren't all fillings preventative of something worse?! Maybe they mean this ;-)

  • *One preventative filling (worth up to $150)

Is a 'preventative' filling the same as a normal filling?

    • Would like to know also!

      • Nup, I'm pretty sure it isnt. Probably a fissure sealant or preventative restoration (i.e. hardly any decay inside it, and placing the restoration just to seal it off)
Wouldn't be surprised if they charge $150-250 for the real fillings they will tell you you're going to need at the next appointment!…

  • +2

Here's the catch. During your consultation they will surely try to make money by saying you need more preventative feeling. This is where they make up for the discounts they offer.

    • +2

I agree. It does sound awfully like those "get a 150-point vehicle inspection worth $200 for only $29.95" and then, as it turns out when your car is in the shop, they find the brakes are wearing unevenly so you need to get them done immediately or you're all going to die a fiery death!!!! The $29.95 deal then turns out to be a $900 exercise in mechanical parts and labour…

      • +1

+1 on the car thing, I had a Goodyear store in Parramatta back in the early nineties pull that one on me; took my old but well maintained beast in for 4 discounted new tyres & the "free" safety check/service…no ph call, came back at 5pm to find my car on the hoist with all 4 wheels off it & a bill for $1300! They thought they might get away with refusing to give back the car as it was unsafe without all these totally necessary repairs! :o

The best item was the radiator cap - a bargain at only $85! The one they took off was new from Kmart two days earlier @ $8 or so! ;)

To say I detonated would be an understatement…I wasn't as placid in those days as now…word to the wise, never leave tyre levers in a location angry customers can reach; ROFL, you've never seen grease-monkeys move so fast to get that car back together in ship-shape condition, it was like the pits at the GP! ;)

        • +1

They need more regular customer reactions like that to improve the reputation of their industry ;-)

    • +1

You guys are very right. But look at it like this.. if you've been to dentist lately and know you have some problems, the "usually $470" price is nowhere near exaggerated.

Expect thousands gone easy, so if this is a checkup for a fraction of the price, it's still a better deal than any other dentist around which is offering nothing. I think marketing is irrelevant so as long as it's the cheapest around, hence making it a bargain.

      • +1

Yep; dentistry, like plumbing; is a licence to print money nowadays! ;)

  • I'm gonna go out on a limb and speculate that a "preventative" filling is just a rarer description for sealants. If true, it's a confusing label, as standard fillings are preventive in nature too.

    • Would that be for chips in teeth?

EDIT: Ugh, just Googled preventative filling and grossed myself out. Looks like it just seals the teeth for further decay.

      • I doubt sealants are restorative enough for that. Better to speak to a dentist :D

  • +1

Perfect after all the lolly deals lately lol

  • Not a bad deal, but if you're with a health fund there's usually no out of pocket expenses anyway.

I've paid $40-50 just for the X-ray alone because my heath fund didn't cover it, so I definitely think this is deal worthy if you live close enough.

    • "no out of pocket expenses" - which health fund is that!?
The only thing my fund covers 100% is the scale & polish. (they must have a special deal on that with the dentist)
I managed to get a panoramic X-ray for free, ie bulk-billed. But that was a path clinic, not the dentist!

  • +1

Given the number of people I know who haven't been to the dentist since they were kids and whose breath smells like they've eaten a dog crap sandwich… this deal should get a super plus. I go every 6 months for a clean, yeah the $100 or so out of your pocket sucks, but everyone around you will be thankful.

    • just brush ur teeth twice a day, use deo, and dont wear clothes twice. have a hundred bucks and people around me. :)

      • You'd think so, but actually I have no fillings, brush twice a day and floss at night - but still need to go every six months. It depends on your genetics, some people are prone to fillings, the rest are prone to plaque build up, and either way you need to see a dentist. (BTW I'm not a dentist nor affiliated with any though, I just love good teeth, LOL!)

  • Do you reckon they will still maintain the high quality service with that price? Or will they treat us like in mass production line treatment?

    • with that price they usually just do it whilst watching tv

  • Laurence Olivier: Is it safe?

  • I had 3 wisdom teeth removed for $700 @ some random East Perth "asian" dentist. Cash only and non stop 12 hour bleeding. Completely dismantled my jaw and injected me more than 20 times without numbing gel =(

Wish they had these sort of deals in Perth

I vote for a 1% increase in the Medicare levy for Denticare.

    • why? We will all just end up paying more, especially given that most of us are young and have nowhere near the expenses of the elderly who will be milking whatever system is in place. And no there is no guarantee that anyone will be willing to pay for our dental health when we are older (see free HECS, affordable housing etc)

    • You do know that much of it will just be pocketed without any guarantee of improvement in services right? Haven't we had enough of throwing our money at schemes poorly implemented only to have them rorted by dentists, builders (take your pick of schemes - they're rolling in the cash now!), health insurance companies (30% rebate) and real estate agents (home buyers grants), etc.

      http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/nation/senate-block-let…

  • That preventative filling deal makes the whole deal sound fishy. Why encourage people to fill up a tooth unnecessarily? It could cause irreversible damage.

  • I pay around $50 for these services in Sydney as health insurance covers a lot of them off.

Not that great for me. If it was free then maybe that would be another story.
