  • Does this unit support Freeview Plus? Whats the GUI like?

    • +4

Unfortunately it does not support Freeview Plus, we almost had a unit that did but due to many problems in getting specific hardware to work with the service it never eventuated. What we were shown before Freeview Plus was available was a lot better than what actually came out so we didn't feel it was worthwhile persuing it at the time.

The user interface is very simple and straightforward. It is favourable amongst our older customers and customers coming from SRT 6100 as that has the same interface although because of the Bluray side of the unit, the remote has a lot more buttons than the SRT 6100 which is the same thing without the bluray drive and a 1TB hard drive instead. You should be able to see representations of the user interface and the remote control on our website in the user manual.

    • just on this, are any of the freeview plus boxes actually any good? do the apps get updated..?

  • +3

Why would you want FreeView? Best thing I ever did was upgrade my old Beyonwiz to a FreeView-less model…

    • Username checks out.

      • Huh? Scab, you are such a rascal!

  • can hard drive be swapped out for larger one?
what is the easiest method to get recording onto a computer?

    • +1

You could probably swap it out for a 1TB drive but we haven't tried a larger capacity drive than this and this is typically what we recommend going up to anyway, it's usually best to stay with what's inside the unit and just record to an external USB drive if you want to expand on the recording capabilities of it.

In fact if you record to an external drive this saves you the effort of having to copy the recordings from the internal drive to an external drive so that you can play them back on the computer so this would be the easiest method to answer your second question.

  • 2013 model?

  • Any suggestions for a solid and fast hd tuner with optional pvr capabilities. Price and speed are my main concerns (the tuner in my tv is dying but the screen is fine)

    • tossing up between a cheap strong tuner with usb recording or an Aerialbox T2100 which includes freeview plus. Both around $60-80

  • Not a fan of convergent devices, but if you are actually after a region-free bluray player with basic PVR functionality, you could do worse.

Cjb I would highly recommend the altech pvr 9600 pvr triple tuner I tb storage plus usb.As a person who has previously owned a strong pvr and was quite happy with it model 5390 until the unit started to play up it went back time after time for repair. The altech hasn't missed a beat local support in melbourne they are always releasing updates cant fault there customer care. The tuners in the altech are very good alot sharper than pvrs in the same price range.I dont beleive strong are the same quality they used to be,infact my local harvey norman stop selling them quite a while ago due to too many coming back, same as my local hifi store who used to carry strong.

    • Cheers, will look into it further. Triple tuners seems like a waste though since a pretty much record very little..

    • I have the Altech PVR 9600T and it's been nothing but trouble. Regularly gets caught in a boot loop. Extremely common problem - see forum on Whirlpool:
      http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2486233
Do yourself a favour and avoid the Altech unit.

  • Does anyone know what the best 1tb pvr is for around this price?
My Magic MTV4000 hard drive recently died.

  • Multi regions for DVD? or Bluray? Do I have to manually switch every time?

    • Looks like you have to switch BD regions every time. I expect the DVD to be multiregion.

    • You need to adjust the setting for Bluray to change it but we've noted when switching to Region A it just plays any region Bluray so we recommend switching it to this and leaving it. DVDs will just play no matter what region they are so nothing to adjust there.

Bought a Strong Android box/TV Tuner combo once. Utter garbage. When it didn't retain basis user settings after reboot I tried reset. Made it even worse.

Hmm I need to replace our TiVo soon. How does the interface compare with TiVo? Does it go "dooo, da-doop, de-boop!" when fast forwarding? That's important for us.

  • The streaming of channels and recordings to other network devices sounds like a really useful feature. Is it unique/standard in this price range? It's tempting for that alone. Especially for multiple TVs in various rooms with poor TV reception and single aerial socket in a rented dwelling,

  • Can I use this to break through store front windows when I'm looting?

    • Yes, it's Strong.

    • Well yes, or you could just use your face.
