      Friends & Family Mobile Offer

    • +10

lol. Employees have MUCH better plans than this..

      • example(s) please

        • It's definitely not MUCH better. The employee plan is $40 for unlimted calls/txt/mms and 5gb data. Most choices of phone are free on this or up to about $7ish extra. This is still a good plan.

        • Find a mate who works for them to disclose it to you! There's more than enough employees out there.

        • @ONEMariachi: much more data than that now.

        • @bchliu: Dayum, when did it change, this was accurate as of october last year when I quit?

Just messaged my mate who is a store manager of a store and said it hasn't changed, not sure where you're getting your info from.

        • @ONEMariachi: You left just before the change then. Its now a bit more comparable to the old Corporate plans.

        • @bchliu: Where is your info coming from, I've literally got a screen shot from retail live of the Telstra Team plan in front of me now saying it is still 5gb.

        • +1

          @ONEMariachi: see PM

        • i use mostly data so for $44/month for 6gb of data and ($400 of calls or 8gb of data) plus $15/month off a handset.

    • lol what?

    • +9

The first two paragraphs tell you the deal:

Telstra staff, family and friends can choose from a Samsung Galaxy S8, iPhone 7 (32GB) or Pixel (32GB) with no additional handset payments – and get a massive 25GB – when they take up a new $90 Go Mobile Plus BYO plan for 24 months.

Eligible Telstra employees are further rewarded with a 25% staff discount – reducing the cost of the plan to just $67.50 per month. If you haven’t applied for your staff discount, visit My Rewards to submit your application form.

It seems the S8 is the no-brainer in this deal vs the 32GB Pixel.

      Also, under Terms and Conditions:

You must not share the offer on social media or the Internet.

OzB isn't SM, is it? :D

      • +5

but how do you access OzB - through the internet =)

        • +2

That was sarcasm, sorry, probably got lost in translation :)

        • @downforce: dont worry i've + you =)

      • +1

I disagree, the I am currently holding on to both of these phones and there's just something about the pixel that's just better.
It's a much smoother experience better bang for buck.
Only issue I'd say is 32gb and lack of any IP rating.

        • +1

It wasn't a general Pixel vs S8 comment, as I'd prefer a Pixel over a S8, but specifically comparing these two models.

        • @downforce: you referring to 32gb vs 64gb + sd support?

    • lol I see my mistake, I have two friends who work at Telstra so let's see what I can do!

  • I wonder if they will swap my current plan to this..?

    • if you're in a contract still. No chance. Telstra are pretty firm with contracts.

      • +1

It says new activation or port ins only so not sure they can do anything even if you're out of contract.

  • Is it a contract?

    • It says 24mths so I'd say so… hmm… seems like a good deal.

      • +1

I am stoopid. I didnt even click on the link.

  • -1

Inclusions are great but Handsets memory are a bit on the downside. What can you do with a 32gb iPhone this days?

    • +5

      get a 64gb S8

        • +14

Where else can you get a no-contract plan with Telstra coverage and 25GB/month plus unlimited talk/text for $53/month?

        • +3

Well the phone is still going for around $1199 out right so effectively paying $961 for the 24mth for the plan. $4005 per mth isn't bad for 25GB data

If you were to sell your phone for around $1000, That would be $48.33 per mth which is still pretty cheap for 25GB of data if you ask me.

        • +5

@ProjectZero: For $4005 per mth I could buy almost 2 plans outright per month.

        • +2

@OnlinePred: HAHAHAHAHA sorry, that should be $40.05

        • +5

@ProjectZero: And if you can get your Telstra friend/family member to sign up for you under their account, you can get 25% off.

          $2160 over 24 months
          -25% = $1620
-$1000 for the phone = $620 for the service, after discount, minus value of phone

Which comes to $25.83 per month, for unlimited national and 25 GB of data.

        • +5

@Seisei: Now I need to make friends with a Telstra employee

        • +7

          @ProjectZero:

There is a downside to every deal.

        • @Kiato: I actually know one, except I want to keep my own number and I'm not sure if this deal allows for it considering it says new connection or port in only.

        • @klaw81: and unlimited calls to 10 countries

        • @Seisei:

thanks for working it out for me! not a bad deal, but given most people will be using netflix id like the optus unlimited netflix deal better…….. hmmm

        • @ProjectZero: You just need to port your number out to Optus for example, then port it back in on this new plan.

        • @ProjectZero: If you are out of contract, port your number to an optus prepaid first then go and get the deal. We used to do it for customers all the time to get them $10 off/month port in credits.

    • Plenty? 32GB is heaps enough for my usage. It's pretty easy to offload music and photos to the cloud if you're running low.

If you're worried, the S8 is the 64GB version and also has SD card expansion for up to an extra 256GB.

      • -4

Can't put Spotify music on the cloud. But with 25GB I guess you can just stream.

        • +4

Spotify music is by definition normal on the cloud 😋

        • Because it's already there?

        • @AncientWisdom:

Not on the phones cloud services. I worded that wrong. The point I was trying to make is 32GB isn't much when you download Spotify playlists to your phone. But with 25GB you can just stream it.

        • +1

@snagseb: You can also use Apple Music if you are so inclined(I prefer spotify myself, but it's an option), which is unmetered.

  • If this had the LG G6 as an option I would've bought it as soon as I saw it :/ seems no one cares about it

    • +2

no reason to get a G6 over S8

      • +3

        I disagree.

The curved edge isn't my favourite design, the dual camera (one being wide angle), the fingerprint reader being in the right spot, the software being less cumbersome (and subsequently less laggy)

And last, but certainly not least, it's rated to milspec and can take a beating. It's designed to withstand being dropped and whatnot. It's a properly durable phone.

        • +1

the fingerprint reader being in the right spot, the software being less cumbersome (and subsequently less laggy)

These two really is subjective though, as a S8+ owner, my experience is that the fingerprint scanner, whilst not in the traditional location, is not really an issue as your fingers would normally rest there anyway when you unlock the phone and I'm talking about a bigger phone than the S8. If you're having second thoughts because of the location of the fingerprint scanner, I'd suggest visiting a store to check out the phone first.

As for the software, I used to agree with you, but having used mine since launch, I've had no real performance issues. If anything, it seems there are a few apps that I use that isn't optimised well which causes the app to slow down and not really the fault of the phone. Though again, this is very subjective and not really easily solved so give the phone a go before deciding is the best course of action.

    • +3

Pretty sure you can sell the S8 and get the G6 without losing a cent (maybe even a slight profit).

    • +1

Using a G6 right now. Pretty cool phone. Got a free TV with it too lol can't complain. Well aside from the fact the TV hasn't been delivered yet.

  • Can anyone just click the link and sign up or do you need to know a Telstra employee to sign off on it?

    • +5

T& C's state that you need to tell them the name of the employee when signing up. It also states that you cannot share this through social media or the internet.

Eligibility: Only Internal Telstra employees (including GCC Australia, TSN employees and employees of TLS & TBCs) and friends and family of these Telstra employees are eligible to take up this offer. Employee name must be provided at the time the offer is taken up. Available for new activations and port-ins on the $90 Go Mobile Plus BYO plan only with a Galaxy S8, iPhone 7 32GB or Pixel 32GB handset. Offer not available with any variant of these handset models (including larger memory and screen size) or with any other handset. Maximum of 5 connections per Telstra employee over the offer period. Offer is not available with any other offer (including second service credit or port in credit). Telstra staff discount may apply to this offer, visit My Rewards for full details. You must not share the offer on social media or the Internet.

      • You must not share the offer on social media or the Internet

        OP messed up.
        C&D coming from telstra soon.

      • Thank you

      • +1

Don't worry I'm sure some employees are willing to become friends with heaps of people like they did with the original round of F&F from what, 6-8 years ago now?

      • John Smith

  • Wow awesome deal. I assume these deals only come under the personal category and not business?

  • +1

Hmmm interested if i can be "friend" with a Telstra employee

    • +1

Any enterprising Telstra employees around want to earn a quick $20 on the side..?

      • +18

Make it $25 and a pack of eneloops and you have a deal

      • +7

        "What's your friend's name?"

        "Ahhh, Joey.. Jo Jo… Shabadoo"

Seriously, do they want to know anything more than the name? Telstra is a big corporation, surely if you make up a common name then that person will exist.

        • +1

Its just a nice way to segment their customer base IMO. I can't see their RRP shop deals being posted on Ozbargain.

        • You need their Staff ID number most likely..

        • John Smith
          John Ciizen

          Pick any

        • @bchliu:

          • Occupation category
          • Occupation
          • Employer's phone number
          • Time with employer

Mocked an online form - the above is what you need.

        • Didn't need this info when i tried.

        • They'll need an employee number too.

  • +1

Telstra employees please, are you here ;)?

  • One way to get friends /telstra employees is through their chat =) ask for their id number and you're good to go.

    • +9

I can just see tomorrow’s headline now “Telstra support desk DDOS’ed by online bargain hunting community trying to make new friends…”

    • +11

Do NOT do this unless you want to risk the employee losing their job.

  • +1

Why do they call it BYO if handset is included?

    • +3

Because the deal is for the kind of idiot that thinks the phone is free when they're losing $2160 in the transaction.

  • +3

I can't afford to buy a house but paying more than $1000 a year so I can watch Youtube in the park seems like a good way to spend money!

    • +9

      Yes….youtube…right.

    • +16

I can't afford to buy a house but paying more than $1000 a year so I can watch Youtube RedTube in the park toilets at work seems like a good way to spend money!

    • +2

What does buying a house got to do with the price of bread?

    • I bet you also enjoy the frequent 'smashed avo' brunch outings!

      http://www.theaustralian.com.au/life/columnists/bernard-salt…

    • Get real. YouTube takes too much data.

Medium (or standard definition), which requires 0.7GB per hour
High, which requires approximately 3GB (HD) to 7GB (Ultra HD) per hour
      http://mindaptiv.com/how-much-data-does-youtube-use/

In one month, 25GB can only provide around 30 hours of SD quality YouTube (looks garbage), or less than 10 hours of HD. Assuming you want to watch in HD, less than 20 minutes a day at the park.

That's why Telstra provides unmetered services like Apple Music and AFL/NRL, because regular usage of streaming services is not realistic even at 25GB, even though Telstra may have ample capacity. I assume Apple has negotiated with Telstra to enable it.

      • +1

They should provide unmetered YouTube streaming

  • The device is free. Generally the device requires you to make some repayment but it's been given away for free as a bonus to the byo plan. You could also buy the exact same BYO plan for the same price without the device

    • It just means there's $0 repayments on top of the $90 plan per month, but essentially you have to be locked into a 24 month contract with telstra or you'll be paying off the remainder of phone when you cancel.

    • Hi I was wondering if you any similar sort of deal for the LG G6??

  • I click "Buy Now" on the S8 and the link just times out…. :/

  • +5

Wouldn't it be awkward if your Telstra friend subsequently stole jewellery from your grandmother but you let it slide to avoid breaking the terms and conditions of this deal?

    • +1

I don't understand the joke. What's the terms and conditions that prevents unfriending?

      • I was laughing when I read his comment and was still smiling while reading yours. Needless to say, I felt like shit halfway through reading yours. Thanks mate!

        • Noooo. I'm so sorry to make you feel bad! I was also laughing but I didn't know why. Is it about the unfriending?

  • +3

Wow. Great deal. If they gave unmetered Google Music I'd jump.

https://www.telstra.com.au/applemusic - that page is a little confusing. Do they give you unmetered data as long as your with them or for only 6 months?

    • +2

Unmetered the whole time….only 6 months free then you have to pay (don't forget if new member you also get 3 months trial for 99c)

  • +1

i am really stuck… i really want to wait for the iphone 8

    • This looks like a stock push through in time for June 30 EOFY…as always if you're happy to wait there will always be a new release around the corner!!

  • +2

Can a Telstra Employee sign up to more than 1 plan at 25% off? if so, who do i need to butter up (i have the good butter too).

    • says up to 5
