    • They can. But they have a limit on how many plans they can get 25% off - 5 is the limit and apparently cannot clash with their other perks such as the Staff Cap plans etc. You'll have to be "very" friendly with an employee to get them to sign off on your 25% discount.

    • +11

There is a misconception here about how the 25% off works.
It is not a promo that can be added to any account or during an order.

It is a flag set on the Telstra employee's own billing accounts which triggers a 25% off for eligible services on that account.

Adding the flag IS audited. Only eligible Telstra staff verified through an internal process can have it added and there is a specialised team that does it. Most staff members are blocked from applying it anyway. If you found one that could, the action would be promptly flagged and they would be terminated for fraud.

TL;DR: Unless you are best-buds with a staff member and they are willing to assume legal responsibility of your service by adding it to their discounted account, you will not get the 25% off.

      • +1

Is it fair to say though that this plan is a sign of things to come?
Telstra seem happy to offer this, which actually beats Voda for price and data, a first in my view?

  • If only they offer 128gb iPhone 7

  • +2

Normally $143 per month for the equivalent retail offer, so a decent saving.

(Mind you, as I only use ~1GB, I'm hanging on to my old Telstra staff cap from the last family and friends deal. With a 2GB data pack bolted on, its $25 per month for unlimited national calls and 3GB of data. Have just bought a prepaid iPhone SE from Telstra for $449 and unlocked it so still cheaper than this…)

  • Tempting deal. Is it possible to get this with New Phone Feeling?

  • +3

FYI even if you legitimately know a Telstra staff member, the offer is for port-ins and new connections only. If you have an existing Telstra service, recontracts are ineligible.

    • Good clarification, thanks. Looks like I'm out.

    • +4

Port it out to somewhere else, sign up, port back in….problem solved.

      • Gotta do it before the expiry date on this offer though

        • +2

Not hard. Ports from Telstra to Optus are almost instantaneous these days.

    • +2

      Gunna call shenanigans on this.
Was in contract on another BYO plan and didn't have any issues ordering online. Delivered today.

Managed to somehow get 25GB, plus a bonus 5GB, plus carry over my old loyalty discount as well.

So I'm now on contract with 30GB for only $70, even cheaper than the Optus Frenzy deal last week.

      • When ordering online you get two options with this deal:
        1. I want to bring my mobile number from another carrier
        2. I want a new mobile number with this purchase

Which of these did you select with your order to maintain an existing Telstra BYO plan number and discounts?

        • Option C - I am an existing Telstra mobile customer and want to keep my mobile number

        • Option C must involve making a phone call or a different means of applying then, as it does not exist on the online application form as linked from this post…

        • /shrug

I just tried again from the above link and it's still there for me online.

        • @Wilkshake:

Nup, didn't get option c either weird.

        • @Wilkshake: It's not there for me either. Which browser did you use? I wonder if that makes any difference.

        • @jewe1s:

          I was on chrome. Yourself?

        • @squarepants: I was using Safari, just downloaded Chrome and had the same outcome. There goes that theory.

        • @jewe1s: Just in Chrome. Nothing special that I can think that I did.

        • @Wilkshake: well I logged into mytelstra as well before visiting.

Perhaps you signed up for the plan by itself without the phone? I do see that option when I go to plan only

        • +1

@plague69: I dont think so. During the order process, it had the L $90 plan and phone at the top.

And given I've got the phone in my hand right now would add to that.

        • @Wilkshake: Lucky guy. Envy u… I'm gonna jump through a few hoops and try to get it.

Did you call at all or just go through the online form? Because I called and told me that even if I wanted to change to a non-staff/friends plan my $20/mo discount will be forfeit.

        • +1

@plague69: Did a LiveChat a few weeks ago to confirm if I recontracted to an S8 (pre-release) that my loyalty bonus was going to carry over. Was going to use that as leverage if I had to, but didn't need to.

Never spoke to anyone in store or via phone, but yrmv. Just did the online form and got lucky to keep my number.

After I received the phone, LiveChated again and confirmed that the $20 discount had carried over. Waiting for my first bill to see if it's the last chase up I have to do

      • Confirmed working. Just tried until it showed the option. Not sure if my discount will carry on. But bonus data was not there for me anymore. Just 25GB now

      • 25GB is only for the first month to help you transition to their network and downloads for the new device. Wont be 25GB anymore after.

  • +3

Placed an order online, only got asked for my details.

  • Anyone know what's the terms after the 2 years is up? Keep paying $90 casually I assume?

    • +9

login to ozbargain and find a better deal?

  • Anyone here a Telstra employee who can hook me up with the deal?

    • ditto.

  • same here, porting from Telstra Prepaid to this contract… didn't ask any info about Telstra Staff… I had a chat with Telstra crew online and she said.. jsut go ahead …

    • +1

so you got this deal without any telstra employee id?

      • yes but I got a msg to call back. So now they just want to verify my details so I need to take my water bills, 3 forms of ID and 3 payslips… so much of extra work :(

        • payslip?seriouly?did you choose the "direct debt" option?.i don't remember a time that i need to show payslips.( i've been on prepaid for 8 years)

        • @afrowan: didn't have to.. I got the email saying this is your tracking number and I got the phone today so may be on of the staff on the phone not knowing whats going on..

  • +3

I just took up the deal with no telstra id and did the 12 month phone swap for $149 as well.
I took a screen shot of the page which shows I have signed up for the $90 BYO plan with $0 handset fee so we will see what happens

    • through phone? or through live chat?

      • I just logged into my account and did the new phone feel and looked for the option of this deal and the rest is history
I took a screen shot of the deal

        • Was the deal easy to find when you did it that way?
Have you heard any more from Telstra?

Which phone has the best sale value if I was to sell it unopened on what kind of prices could I get on gumtree for each?

    • +2

Go to Gumtree and find out

    • +1

Probably an iPhone. People seem less concerned about buying a used iPhone than others. Maybe that's testament to Apples ability to lock down the phone so the buyer knows what they're getting, or maybe it's just the sort of people who want an iPhone but can't afford retail.

    • +4

s8 as as its new and $200 more expensive outright than iphone7.

      • -2

and it 6 to 12 months time it will only be a quarter of the value of the Iphone 7.

        • +4

Bhagain question was which phone would give the best price on the market right now so… s8 and pixel

  • My friend is a NBN technician for Telstra (they are all independent contractors i believe).. can he help to hook us up to the plans ?

    • +2

Give me his mobile number and I'll ask him for the both of us. What do you say?

  • why would you need 25gigs? isnt that bit too much?

    • +1

24/7 ahem entertainment? I currently have $40 for 7.5Gb with Telstra and streaming Spotify kills that in half a month. Lucky I have premium and just download the music prior. For those with lower storage capacity, this would be great, like the 32GB pixel and iphones they're offering.

      • +1

That happens when your provider doesn't give you Unlimited Spotify streaming. (Thanks Optus)

      • You might consider switching to Apple Music, which is apparently unmetered on Telstra.

        • Unfortunately, I can't… at least not at this stage. I have a Spotify family plan going with some of my friends so I can't make the decision by myself. Also, IIRC, apple music was more expensive.

    • +4

why would you need 25gigs? isnt that bit too much?

      It's 2017, not 2007. :P

  • +4

Right now this is a great deal but in six months time it will be a so-so deal and a year from now a lousy deal and you'll be left with 12 months in purgatory.

    • +3

You're forgetting that this is Australia and their Telstra… the terms cheap, affordable or best value does not go together when the sentence involves both normally…

      -Edit-

Actually, it's just when it involves Telstra lol

    • +1

I sort of agree. There are many ways to justify this deal. The worst way is to overvalue the phone. The attraction of this deal is 25gb/mth. However this deal is not for me.

I see the way that many people crunch the numbers to see the value of this deal, much like the woolie's deal. When I Just look at the numbers being crunched under a magnifying glass, I cannot disagree. It makes perfect sense that it is a DEAL! GET IT. However when I step back and look at the bigger picture, it is a little less attractive.

    • Yes LC your'e right.

Don't be too quick to lock in a contract until you read this………

  • +1

    Just ported a number over.
Walked into my local Telstra shop. I know most of the workers as we own a business next door.

They were kind enough to give me a $10 discount for porting a number over. So $80 all up with an iPhone 7.

    Thanks op for the deal.

    • Can you introduce me to your friends next door as well?

      • +4

Actually she said anyone can do it…It has to be a personal account, can't be applied to a business one.
Pop into a store and give it a go…They can apply the $10 discount to a port in so worth asking for it.

        • -1

This offer is not eligible for the $10 port in credit. If the staff member has put it on for you, you will be able to keep it, however they will definitely be flagged and their manager notified.

Please do NOT go in store and pressure staff into adding this. They will be reprimanded for doing so.

        • +4

          @Thundaja:
Actually she asked a manager and she said yes…It might have something to with the fact I have 6 other mobile services with them…Two landline, internet and foxtel packages as well.

        • -1

          @bbourizk:
It doesn't matter what the manager says. Use of that offer is audited. As a staff member, her account will have been flagged.

You managed to get that offer. Genuinely, good job. My original comment served so that the rest of community would not follow as this is not normal practice.

The last thing staff members need is someone going off at them over a discount that they are not allowed to use because they read online about someone else getting it due to another consultant not following process. Please don't put them in that position. It has been communicated internally that additional discounts are not to be applied with this offer.

I don't know why I'm being downvoted over my original comment.

          Edited for clarity.

        • +5

          @Thundaja:
I understand what your saying and I didn't neg you.
I went in there and said I wanted to add another number to my account. I asked about this offer and she said yes I can apply for it and she offered the $10 discount. She checked with the manager who said yes we can apply it.

My other 6 services all have had a $10 discount applied to them again offered by the store when I signed up last year. 10gb for $40 with unlimited calls and SMS.

I don't see any harm in asking for a discount. Certainly wouldn't condone going off at them but no harm in asking.

        • +2

          @Thundaja:
Because your 2nd comment sounded like this
          Yes I did neg you.

        • @payton:
          Sums it up perfectly

        • +1

@Thundaja: just called and they said $10 can be applied. She didn't say it was a "port in" discount though… think you're getting too serious

  • Ordered one without any friends or family details and it went through without any problems. Received already the "email bill activatio" email so it must have been processed successfully

    • in store?

      • No, online. Just got the shipping confirmation

        • Wow. Cool

  • Galaxy s8 no 32gb

    • I got the S8 64GB with my deal

  • +1

my contract ends in mid june. Can i take advantage of this deal (with or without the 25% extra discount)?

    • The extra 25% is exclusively for staff members

  • +2

Mobile data will be unlimited by the end of the year………….

    http://www.news.com.au/finance/money/budgeting/unlimited-dat…

    • Yes..but likely at very high price points

    • Probably with throttling in some form

    • It wouldn't be true unlimited, USA carriers will heavy throttling you around 20-25GB mark…Same will happen here if any is released. As far as Telstra's perspective, all I can see happening is Telstra rebrand this plan as unlimited with throttling after 25GB.

Although anyone correct me if I am wrong, didn't ACCC outlawed unlimited plan that has throttling in it?

      • Unlimited just means no extra charge right? Unlimited quantity, never about speed. Not sure if ACCC has a leg to stand on here.

  • +1

As a Telstra thing, this is the cheapest deal imo I have ever seen. Now Vodafone is doing 25GB@$100pm no phone 24 months. This is what, TELSTRA! Jumping from Vodafone atm…..

  • +1

Do Telstra employees still get 20% discount on all plans or has it increased?

    • 25%

      • Is there any other additional discounts or freebies? Some other companies I think have free streaming services or a certain amount deducted from their plans instead of a percentage.

  • What about for former PMG/Telecom staff members?

  • My order was cancelled. I was off contract and wanted to take up this offer. I guess some are luckier than others. Tomorrow I tackle disconnections

    • You need to port your number out to Optus and then back in.

      • If I port out and back in, how long will that take. Assume I port to Optus, wait a day, can I then port back to Telstra straight away?

        • Ports are pretty much instantaneous now. When I ported my number from Telstra to Optus it was under 10 minutes before it was active with the new number. Porting back took about 20 minutes.

        • +1

I know it's not your job to tell me exactly how.to do this, but is the cheapest port out, port in using the Optus $2 per day option and then Telstra new application?

The Mrs would chop my kernackers off if she lost service.more than a day. I don't want to be with Optus for more than a minute if I have to

        • @Economic: port early in a business day, weekends can be slower

        • @Economic: do they still have the $2/day option?

  • interesting

  • Confused….It's a "BYO" plan…With handset….

  • You can the $90 BYO on a 12 month contract for $70 with 25gb

probably a better deal to get 24month contract and the S8
