AmEx Platinum Charge - 100,000 Ascent Premium Points, $300 Travel Credit, Free Platinum Reserve Companion Card, $1200 Annual Fee

40

A rehash of this post by tizey

Not much has changed.

It took me a while to get my hands on the application form for the Reserve (which is well worth it to get the most value out of the card) so PM me if you require it.

Please note for the month of May you may be entitled to receive 3,000 points for each supplementary card you add (one bonus per account). You can for example add yourself as an extra card holder for the sake of getting the bonus.

To make the most of this, it may be a good idea to also apply for a supplementary card for your partner as it has the same Priority lounge access as the primary card holder. Eg. The primary and supplementary card holder can each take in one guest with them.

And of course some free food at Sydney airport:
https://www.ausbt.com.au/priority-pass-now-offers-36-of-food…

This card has a big annual fee of $1200, but big benefits:

  • 100,000 Ascent Premium Points (10 airline transfer partners (Including Qantas) + 2 Hotel Partners
Great transfer rates (1:1 for most airlines) - Qantas, Virgin, Singapore, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Etihad, Thai, to name a few.
  • $300 travel credit to use at Amex Travel.
  • Free Companion Card of Reserve Platinum Card - $400 travel voucher for free.
  • Free Priority Pass for you and 1 supplementary cardholder, which you can take 1 guest in each (valued at US$399 each)
  • Gold Status with SPG/Marriott/Hilton
  • Insurances - Travel, Rental Car, Roadside assist.

Big earn on spend:

  • Earn 3 points per $1 spent at restaurants in Australia
  • Earn 2 points per $1 spent on airlines, accommodation and spend in foreign currency
  • Earn 1 point per $1 spent on everything else, except those in the 0.5 points category
  • Earn 0.5 points per $1 spent on utilities, telecommunications companies, non American Express provided insurance and government bodies

100,000 will make up most of the $1200 annual fee. If you include the $700 travel credit, you are already in front without taking into account any of the other perks.

Eligibility:

  • I am aged over 18
  • I am an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • I have a personal or household gross (pre-tax) annual income of $100,000 or more
  • I have no history of bad debt or payment default

Important to note - it is household income, not personal income. I can vouch for this personally - so dont feel you need to be above $100,000 personally to apply for this card - if you and your spouse earn $50,000 each, then you qualify.

    God I hate Vultures!

  • Its actually only 80,000 points bonus.

    • Sorry. Fixed now.

        Not much has changed.

A full 20,000 points has changed since the last deal.

  • Referral link shows 90,000 bonus points only…

  • Still eligible for bonus points even if we have other Amex play cards (i.e. Velocity/edge/reserve)?

    • In general no. There have been some mixed success due to them being on different programs. This card is on the Ascent so if you were on the Gateway, Qantas or Velocity you might sneak through. With the edge and reserve I would probably not risk it.

    • +1

No. See comment from Amex representative here: http://www.pointhacks.com.au/american-express-points-offer-e…

      • I had an essentials card which I cancelled a few months ago. Got this when they were offering 100k points. It has been a month and still no points. So I guess they honour their T&Cs.

However, my friend who applied for the explorer card while the essentials was still active got his reward :(

unfortunately, there is no way to sneak through. been there an done that, now i am in the middle of cancelling it

    • +2

      points finger 'ha ha'

  • You don't get the 3000 bonus points by adding yourself as a supplementary cardholder, needs to be someone else…

    • Is it a once off or many times?

      • I was told it was once off. However I did do one on all my cards and got it for each.

        • That I know but was told something else entirely different. You get bonus points for each supp that you add on the same card

  • was looking at getting this card or the Explorer, but AE confirmed i can't get the bonus points because of my existing Engineers Australia AE card :(

    • +1

You maybe able to because it is a charge card. See cynix comment above but it is a mixed bag. I did get mine.

      • thanks for the heads up. tried again today, and no luck. they did throw in an extra 1500 points as an incentive for me to keep the card….but i might as well cancel and begin the cool off period

Fk me $1200 annual fee! Am I the only one who failed to see the "bargain" here..

If according to the link: https://www.ausbt.com.au/priority-pass-now-offers-36-of-food…

"…It's worth noting that the American Express Platinum Charge card also gives you unlimited access to Sydney Airport's American Express Lounge, so there's nothing to stop you from mix-and-match with a meal and drink at Benny Burger, Peroni Bar or Mach2 and then clocking up some more private work-friendly lounge time at the AMEX lounge…."

Well it's a year's lunch/dinner sorted, maybe that's the bargain for those work inside the terminals…

      • +1

        Heh.

There's an instant $700 in travel credit too so between that and lounge access you already have a bit of value. If gold status at those hotels gets you some upgrades that could be sweet too.

Too rich for me, but I'm sure for the right person it'd be worth it.

        • Yeah, same here too rich for me as well…

If you grab a cup of coffee from the lounge on working days, say it's $4.75 a cup 260 x $4.75 it's worth $1235 + that $700 of travel credit make it sweeter.

    • Had this card till mid 2016. Used to also take advantage of the free Express Path pass for myself and the family (up to 4 people) traveling together on any airline and any Class when leaving Sydney airport. Not sure if it's still available, but it helped skip the queue.

Don't forget the Buyers Advantage (extended warranty), Purchase Protection and Refund Protection benefits.

Also had one of the best free Travel Insurance policies for the cardholder, supplementary cardholders and dependent children.

Only 44 interest free days, though.

    U damn rich people

  • Can someone confirm getting the $400 travel credit on the complimentary Amex Reserve card? They keep telling me I am eligible but never issue me the travel credit.

    • It doesn't get credited to your account, you purchase some travel or accommodation through AE Travel and then request that they apply the credit to the spend.

  • a personal or household gross (pre-tax) annual income of $100,000 or more……it's not for everyone

    • Me and the missus just get over that together.

Rewards cards … so last century .. get over it guys … :-) .. !!

  • +3

The bargain would be not to get this card. Immediately save $1200 annual fee.

  • +2

    "Do you take Amex?"
    "No"

    • +5

"But there's an Amex sign on your door"
      "No"

      • lol so true, i tried to pay on a terminal with the AMEX logo on it, got error "Card unrecognised"… My visa went through straight away.

  • I use amex for coles but gc (7% off) for woolworths and caltex

  • Anyone know if I can get the bonus point as I already have platinum edge and explorer cards? Should I cancel one before applying?
