  • interesting looking unit…

Looks can be deceiving - from Amazon review:

"Fake midrange driver on the speaker set (the speaker in the middle is plastic)"

Although at this price, it is OK.

      • Good information.

      • hahaha… I looked at the pic and thought, 3 drivers, that could be a very decent unit for the dollar….

        Adding a fakie changes everything!

  • +6

Ha, cool! You had me at 'VU' ;)

Nice little cheapie system by the looks. Class-D TDA-7492P which has the potential to produce 25WRMS assuming it's given enough juice by the power supply. The speakers have a fake Midrange and the Tweeter has been reported as being very 'bright' but hey you'd easily get $59 of enjoyment from it :)

Anyone interested to see the rear panel/connections as I was then here you go: http://www.theselectsource.com/UploadImages/20162604/6359726… I'm tempted to get one just to see what it's really like. So cheap!

As soon as I saw this stereo deal, I knew I'de find you here… Might be a good little system for the kids room.

      • +2

Yeah yeah, I'm pretty predictable ;) It'd be interesting to chuck a pair of Volls on one of these and see how they go. Add a Voll Sub (whenever they're available) and it should be a decent little setup!

Love your reviews, mate. I think I have bought speakers two or three times in the last couple of years, based solely on your appraisals.

        • +1

@wolfenator87: Ha, cheers Wolf. I hope reality has met your expectations based on my reviews so far?

        • @SteveAndBelle: definitely 😉

        • @wolfenator87: Glad to hear it. I'll add your reply to my CV ;)

    • Do you think this amp would go alright with the Behringer 1C-BKs?

Wish I saw the Volls before I bought these. Bit cheaper!

      • +1

        Yep, they should work fine.

    • Some info an the TDA amp board here @ Amazon

  • +1

50 watts am i hearing that right how small is it them speakers look huge for 50 watts

    • +1

Says in one of the reviews "They are smaller than the picture leads on"

      • Anyone know dimensions? The info on Kogan's site says 49x28.4x43.9cm, but I'm guessing that's the box it comes in. Judging from the size of the CD tray, the speakers appear to be slightly wider than a CD case.

I'm considering putting together a poorman's 'dreamdesk' ala Jonathan Morrison on Youtube. I'd mount the amp under the desk and just leave the speakers on top with a vertical laptop dock and 27+ inch monitor.

The black version of this stereo would look better.

        • From Amazon:

          Product Dimensions 19.4 x 11.2 x 11.5 inches

        • +2

Hmm, $59 buys you a lot of excess you probably don't need for a 'Dreamdesk'. When was the last time you used a CD Player? Why not just get a pair of $100 Voll Bookshelf speakers, a $50 compact stereo Amp off Gumtree and a Bluetooth receiver for $20 and build up a VERY nice system? Sure it's three times the price but it'll keep your system minimalist and it'll sound amazing.

        • @SteveAndBelle: Fair point. Being mounted under the desk, it won't make that much difference, but chances are it will still be visible. Thanks for putting me onto the Volls; I haven't seen them before. I don't like the brown, but I could fix that with plastidip (another thing I'd like to try). It made me realise that the speakers on this stereo are way too deep.

In reality, I just want a bit of a DIY project to keep me occupied, and will likely get very little use out of a dreamdesk. I shouldn't waste my money on it.

        • @puffinfresh: Haven't seen the Volls before? Haven't been on OzBargain for long then :p Seriously though, don't let their small size or generic branding fool you, they're excellent little speakers that perform better than many worth a heck of a lot more! The matching Voll Sub is apparently due to be released very soon and promises to fill the bottom end the bookshelfs cant reach. TIme will tell…

  • What does digital pll radio mean?

  • Would this amp be ok to use with different speakers (higher quality)? Wired connection?

    • Answered this myself

      for anyone interested

      http://www.ithomeproducts.com/sites/default/files/pdf/ITCDS-…

      • Still unable to tell if speakers are wired connection or not (- +) ? Anyone?

        • Yep, as per the rear panel pic I found online linked in my post above, the speaker connections are simple spring-push terminals so you could easily connect other speakers and/or a Sub as long as it had high-level input capabilities. Easy enough to get a hi-low converter from China for a few bucks if not.

        • @SteveAndBelle:
          Thanks mate

Would this amp be ok to use with different speakers (higher quality)?

If you have some decent speakers, or get them off gumtree, you can just buy the bluetooth/amp board off eBay for $10:

      http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=TD…

Install it in one of the speaker boxes, and dispense with the unwanted junk.

  • This one goes all the way up to 11.
Yes, that's how good it is.

    Nice.

    • Yes and it has button batteries too! You know, those things us Gen-X'ers happily lived with as kids in the 80s but very rarely felt the need to swallow even though the battery covers just slid on & off without extra screws or clips?!

      • Yes but there were only 0.01 button batteries per square metre in those days.
Now it's, well, so high it's hard to breath without taking a few in.

        • … but those 0.01/sm button batteries included the two that were in my Mickey & Donald 'Game & Watch' with just a loose clip on the battery cover. Maybe my parents were trying to passively kill me off afterall ;) It's terrible that kids are swallowing them BUT I can't help but think it isn't just that there are more of them around that's driving the trend. The mind boggles.

        • +2

Well they probably were getting swallowed now and again - just more reporting now given the increase in rates and misdiagnoses.

And you were just as much a klutz as a kiddie as are modern kiddies - the evolutionary epoch isn't quite long enough to alter the design.

Why am i talking about button batteries?
          Go to your room!

I'm thinking 'In the shed' on this one.

  • deal is expired?

  • Yes it's a cheap system with Bluetooth and the price is tempting, but doesn't everyone have a decent brand name stereo from the last 20 years that would crap all over this any day of the week? Or are people just chucking that stuff in landfill these days?

    • I fear most people have chucked their old stuff. Take a drive around a few suburbs the next time there's a council collection and you'll be amazed. It was more the case 10-15 years ago but you can still find some incredible Hifi gear on the kerb simply because it doesn't have HDMI or Bluetooth. The stories behind a lot of the gear I've managed to score will blow your mind :) I don't collect much these days as I've run out of storage space but there's still plenty out there.

      • I offered a friend who was moving out a Sony portable stereo and told her 15 bucks would add Bluetooth, and she took one look at it and said 'nuh' on account that it was yellowed. I am thinking about giving it a retrobrite treatment and seeing if she is interested then.

Its a shame because those old stereos are sometimes fantastic, and we'll beyond the sound quality of any cheap tear like this. And lots of them don't need a sub because the woofers are big enough anyway. We should be treasuring the good stuff but so many people replacing their good stuff with something much worse
