Great phone, it's what I use. UI needs a little bit of getting used to, but that can be fixed by just getting a different launcher or custom ROM if you don't like it.

    • +1

I hear complaints about miui but it really is a very good ui.

I have a redmi and installed lineage mainly because I wanted to try it. I prefer lineage because it is more similar to the vanilla android on my Nexus but I used miui for a few weeks before swapping and quite liked.it tbh.

      • I'm running it now as well, just took me a while to get used to.

        • what OS did you have before?

        • +1

          @Gimli:
          https://sourceforge.net/projects/resurrectionremix/files/gem…
Mainly this one, it's very good. The downside of custom roms is that you can't use android pay.

        • +1

@spludgey: Actually, now pretty much any custom rom can use Android Pay. I use it with my Mi5 with LineageOS. Just download and flash Magisk. Also allows root and all the other good things whilst still being able to use Android Pay.

        • @gaz090:
I thought that it used to work but no longer does?

        • +1

@spludgey: Definitely works with the latest LineageOS build and Magisk v12 :)

I don't like the loss of the app draw. It's an iOS clone. But otherwise it is fine.

        • +3

You can fix that with a launcher like Nova or Apex.

        • @shiznit: Do you at least agree that an app draw is better than no app draw?

        • I don't understand. Why don't you just make a folder and stick it in the taskbar (that's the wrong name for the app shortcut row on the bottom)?

        • @Diji1: That's not what the app drawer is. It's that button that shows all your apps. As opposed to the home screen where you can put widgets and shortcuts. You can't remove apps you don't want showing up on your home screen. And I've been unable to put widgets onto MIUI aside from the google bar and clock which it comes installed with.

Making a folder and hiding unwanted apps there is a ghetto solution that doesn't actually get rid of them, but just consolidates them into one icon. I don't want all of those apps in one folder. I want them separate, just not on the same screen.

iOS is just Android with app drawer permanently selected and you can't exit out of it.

      • Agreed, I started on MIUI 8 and I was staggered at how much better it is compared to Sony ie stock Android. Just lots of care and attention to apps and UI that really make sense rather than doing things because they can be done.

Dammit, just bought it last week for $318 AUD :(

    • Thats unlucky, at the current price it came to around $314 with Express shipping.

      • Sorry, just checked I paid AU$314.53. Hopefully it arrives soon.

    • bought it last week for $328, already received it
delivery took only 2 days from HK to Sydney, so Im not complain

      • +4

        I am impress

      • Did you get that from BangGood? Mine still hasn't arrived :(

        • no. from an ebay AU seller.

i've ordered couple times from the BangGood, but used standard shipping method. Both times they shipped from their warehouse in 2-3 days.

  • Great price for great phone

  • +4

Man if this has a Microsd card I would be all over It. Or maybe I should just suck it up.

    • What phone do you have now?

      • Redmi note 3 and mi Max

        • i would wait then. Is there any reason you want a new phone?

        • @Gimli: yeha my redmi note screen is smashed and I've got a glass protector holding down the glass haha. Has band 28 too which I absolutely need since I work in a dungeon.

On other hand mi Max is awesome but no band 28 so can't get reception at work, which is mission critical to me.

    • Isn't 64gb enough? You can still have plenty of games/photos and stream everything else

      • +2

That's a fair point I just like the convenience of swapping between phones in two seconds. That being said my music collection is bigger than 64GB

        • -2

Upload it all to Google Music. Get Optus plan that has free unlimited music streaming, save, gold.

        • +4

@YellowKnight: good idea but fatal flaw: poor cellular reception at workplace as I work in a dungeon.

        • +5

That is the convenience I love with MicroSD's. Just swap and you are ready to rock with new phone. Not supporting storage expansion is stone age with available technology at hand, but still manufacturer's tend to follow and imitate what Apple/ iPhone is inventing.

        • -4

@FUZHA: I know this will blow your mind and amaze you but every other user doesn't have the same requirements as you.

        • +2

@Diji1: Agreed, not everyone's requirement as mine nor yours and that wasn't my point.

        • @FUZHA:
Imo cloud swapping should be the way to go but sadly we are not there yet.

Nice looking phone with decent specs and 1/4 of S8 price.

Great phone for running Lineage OS on

  • +1

Is this worth the upgrade from a Redmi Note 3 Pro?

    • No way, B28 is what we need when there's no more 2G

    • Yes, you ain't gonna find a phone in this price range this quality of camera for a while. The mi6 is pretty darn good, but its price is sort of on the high side, even for a mi and have no head phone jack.

    • I had the Redmi note 3 Pro and upgraded to mi5. The camera is way better on the mi5 and it has nfc. I think the Redmi note 3's camera is one of the grainiest cameras I've come across. But I do miss the expandable storage.

  • I recommnd Mi5s for better camera. But this is good price

    • I've heard the Mi5s fingerprint sensor is very variable in its performance. (I have a Redmi Note 3 with the FPC sensor and it works brilliantly, so I'm holding out until Xiaomi gets the new type of fingerprint sensors sorted)

    • I thought it's the other way, i.e. the MI5 has the better camera, and that is why some people still go for the older model?

      • I think camera wise mi5s>mi5>>>>>>mi5s plus

        • Nvm I'm outdated.

  • I'd go for the MI5S personally.
Considerably better camera and more storage and only marginally more expensive.

    • Where are you seeing it marginally more expensive? Banggood have it for $381 verses $294 for the Mi5, to me that's a fair bit more.

      • I got an email from Gearbest that had it for $269.99 USD ($362 AUD) on a Mother's Day sale - so I think $68 more is not much considering you get expandable storage and also the improved camera (same one as Google Pixel, which was considered one of the best cameras in a mobile currently).

Here's a link, not sure if it'll work:
        http://www.gearbest.com/cell-phones/pp_602057.html?wid=4&utm…

I got my partner the MI5S and I've been really impressed with it.

        • Doesn't work which is a pity but you're right on about the camera, that is tempting.
Are you sure it has expandable storage? That page says it doesn't have it.

        • @mscaptain: Yeah I'm pretty sure it's dual sim and the second sim slot also doubles up as a microSD card slot.

Sign up to the gearbest newsletter if you're keen - they're literally doing sales for Xiaomi stuff every other day.

EDIT: Just checked and I've received 7 separate emails since March 27th from Gearbest, all with the MI5S on sale, and each time it's gotten about $5 cheaper.

    • +1

But no third party ROM (LineageOS) support compared to the Mi 5

  • What are the main advantages/disadvantages between this and the Redmi 4X?

    • +1

Advantage would be the Snapdragon 820 processor and the camera.

      • +4

Disadvantages would be SD card and battery. Just to lay it out there.

  • ebay Au selling for $325 delivered with Australian warranty. Got one for a friend a month ago but fingerprint sensor is crap. Just disappeared from settings menu. No fix as of last month. A few other niggles like after updating Google apps, Play Store kept saying "Waiting for WIFI…" and queued downloads forever. Could be an easy fix but didnt look into it as it wasn't my problem. Maybe new update fixed it?

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Xiaomi-Mi-5-Mi5-White-64GB-4G-LTE…

(Says AU warranty further down but donno how it works)

Also need to get a case for it as its slippery as hell because of the glass back.

    • Not sure whether the eBay model comes with the Global ROM or not. My Redmi 4 came with the Global ROM and the fingerprint sensor is pretty snappy as well as the Play Store app works without a glitch. As this model got a more powerful chipset getting it updated should iron out such issues.

      • -1

Talking about the MI5 fingerprint here, sensor not working and disappearing from the settings menu. It had stable Global ROM. Many users have fingerprint sensor failure issue on the MI5. The sensor on other Xiaomi phones is fine.

There's a fix which involves opening up the phone but do you really wanna go that way? Might be covered under warranty.

        https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-5/how-to/guide-how-to-fi…

    • i received the Mi5 from this seller this week.
the phone was delivered from HK (not AU stock) by DHL. so, I'm not sure about real AU warranty

delivery took only 2 days from HK to Sydney.

  • +1

Does Android pay work in AU on this or any other Xiaomi phone?

  • Good price for what you're getting. I would actually recommend this over a Redmi Note for the hundred extra.

A bit of the sheen has come off now that it's a year old though.

Which model has the ceramic back cover?

    • the top end black one has ceramic back.

  • shame, camera not as good as oneplus3 despite same sensor

  • Mi5s ftw

  • Android newbie here - How difficult is it to flash these back to OEM spec so you remove any potential bloatware installed by third parties? Also, do they get regular updates?

What happens should the phone encounter issues?

    • +1

Just did it last week. Very easy to be honest. Xiaomi has made it super simple. Only hurdle is getting the bootloader unlocked via Xiaomi. If you are lucky, they will do it at your first request.

  • Has anyone experienced the GPS issues that have been reported? I had the mi5 on my short list but ended up going for the Redmi Note 4X (SD), mainly because of the GPS issue.

  • Just bought MI5s on May 16 from Vickmall for US$294(after minus voucher of US5). Staff by the named Selina was fantastic. Very helpful and same day dispatch. Hope will arrive soon.

  • Don't skip the express shipping. It'll take a month if you stick with economy.

  • they post items from china and take ages to arrive. i used once and gave up buying whatever price they offer.
