In many way uber has destroyed cab business in Melbourne and government is not taking action.
People vote with their feet. If the taxi business was cleaner cars, more on time, more service oriented, have a system to show me where my cabs at, to not refuse fares cos they're too short of a trip, not be based of "running the metre", have accountability for the driver (ie. I can rate and see other people rating) and cheaper - damn I'll hail a cab at the cab rank.
This has nothing to do with the government - the taxi industry can implement all of that easily. They're not radical changes. They just don't want to change their rip-off market model.
