Thanks purchased 10, 4 year memberships

      Proof?

        You'll need to believe me

Thanks purchased 4, 10 year memberships

    • -4

Thanks. Purchased 10, 1 year memberships.

I don't get paid the big bucks ya know?

  • +1

Thanks OP. Now if only they were offering free sign up to their frequent flyer program. One thing I have always wondered regarding a Club membership like this is whether if you do enough travel to make this worthwhile, how likely you are to have gold status or equivalent from all the flights. Depends on who you fly with of course, but if I understand it, you can only access the club if flying on Qantas or Jetstar anyway.

    • +1

There's frequently free promotions for free frequent flyer program. Search Ozbargain or take a look at https://www.finder.com.au/free-qantas-frequent-flyer-members….

      • +1

thank you bg, and particularly iforgotmysocks - your link worked a treat and I've now signed up the kids. Some family travel coming up and they will very kindly give me all their points :?)

    • +1

Just sign up with an overseas address and it will be free. Once, your membership number etc is allocated, simply change the details to your OZ details.

    • how likely you are to have gold status or equivalent from all the flights

I found this is good for when you're starting to fly a fair bit before you qualify for gold (which may take up to a year of frequent travel in economy)

If you hit gold then your qantas club membership just goes on hold until you're no longer gold. I've been gold for the last four years or so and have about 3 years qantas club membership waiting for me if I don't re-qualify

1 year/$537 = Drink $537 worth of pre-flight booze? Challenge accepted Qantas Pub.

    • +2

      Assume a beer usually costs $5, that's 107.5 beer a year.

Assume you fly 20 sectors a year, you only have to drink 107.5 / 20 = 5.35 beers pre flight. EASY!

      haha

      • Need more paper bags in the seats.

      • +5

Since you can bring a guest, you can bring that down to a respectable 2.675 beer/wine/spirit per person. Then grab a takeaway barista coffee on your way out and you are ahead.

        • throw some food into the mix, no brainer.

        • takeaway coffee with ice & triple Chivas for the plane.

Sorry sir we don't allow hot bervages on the plane

Oh it's not, it's just coke, see the ice

          Oh sorry, that's ok then

$29 jetstar flight just paid for itself.

      • Flew over 100 sectors in 2014/2015 (i.e in 12 months) so that'd only be just over 1 beer per flight.. and in reality I actually drank exactly 0 beers the whole time as I was almost ways going to be driving (or on 2 wheels) at either end..

Must be in the 1% of cheapest ever frequent flier club members that year :-(

  • +11

I never miss an opportunity to point out that the QFF online booking system is total rubbish, verging on the unusable and ought to be an embarrassment to a serious business. But then again it's been that way for years .. :-( .. !! I've complained directly about it on the site MANY TIMES and not EVER had the courteously of a reply. Even. They couldn't give a toss. SHAME, Qantas!! Yes I know, off subject, but relevant ….

    • +2

They've made it worse with the new update.

    • +1

I agree, I recently tried to book an award flight with a multi-city itinerary. It just kept reporting an error code. I seemed to have this same problem about 4 years ago when I last tried to book a similar flight. They really need to get their act together as there are so many flight search engines available, and this will continue to grow. Anyone with half a brain would be using an alternative search engine, at least just to see what the difference is with other airlines.

"We've simplified the points system for your convenience! All your points are now worth much much less than before, expire sooner with no notice and fewer ways to keep your account active, there's more charges (a fun surprise!), and you can do less things with them! You're welcome!"

  • +11

$537 and i still have to make my own sandwich with bread and cold meats everyone has been coughing over

    • +1

      The meat is covered!

      • +8

So is the cheese. Each slice in its own little bag. Very fancy.

        • +2

Depends on lounge….. was in Sydney yesterday and I had to shake the cheese because I grabbed one which was stuck to 7-8 other slices!

      • +9

I only cover my meat when joining the mile high club

      • I prefer the " uncovered meat" <LOL>

  • +6

Even if you fly Qantas once every fortnight it still costs over $20 per entry. Better to spend it in a cafe for drink and food you actually want. Only so many self serve ham and salad sandwiches you can eat at the lounge before you get sick of it.

    • +2

The value is in the booze. You won't get your money's worth otherwise ;-)

      • +3

How much can you drink before a flight? Do you skol one after the other or do you intentionally go really early to the airport?

        • +2

          i go really early :)

My value is in the international flights. I always fly with Qantas or Jetstar, and fly internationally at least 3 times a year. I like to get to the airport 3 hours before any international flight (just a habit of mine), and having the luxury of sitting in the quiet, having some free food and some free booze makes it all worthwhile.

Should point out though - check with your employer… some employers have really good deals with qantas for much cheaper memberships. mine costs near half that!

        • @geoffs87:

having the luxury of sitting in the quiet

Except it's not quiet these days though is it? I went to the Qantas Club (Melbourne domestic) a few weeks ago, and it was packed. May as well have sat out with the plebs… probably would have been quieter.

          Is the International different?

        • +5

International is worse. Couldn't find a seat late evening at Melbourne last time. It was like finding a car park at Chadstone at Christmas time.

        • the value comes when you get longer stints at airports especially with international flights where you need to check in a couple of hours before hand, quite often you can be in the international lounges 2+ hours when transiting between countries. personally I find my QC to be critical value, earlier this year my wife and I had to spend 8 hours in their due to a delayed flight. between us we easily got $300 value for just that one flight alone. basically only takes a couple of international trips a year to easily justify the expense.

        • +3

@gromit: and don't forget that end of day, pre-flight shower, especially when you've been sweating it out in Asia.

If you have kids, they also get in free. Handy if you're on Jetstar as you can make sandwiches, grab bottles of juice & water, some fruit, plus a colouring-in pack for the plane.

        • @SavageCarrot: Every time i've been in the international, its been great. Always got a couple of chairs for my partner and I. We will have breaky/lunch/dinner in there, so saves us a meal. 3 or 4 drinks each. I guess theyre all things you wouldnt necessarily do at the airport without the lounge, but they are things that you can therefore have the luxury of, with the lounge.

I haven't seen the Sydney International lounge overly busy yet. Never had an issue. You can also use partner lounges overseas (when flying JQ or QF onwards or back to australia). I've used the lounge in CHristchurch numerous times, and the QClub in Auckland a few times also.

    • +3

Agreed. Only worth it for the alcohol and how many magazines you can stuff into your laptop bag

      • +4

I always stuff crap into my bags when im in a Qantas Lounge, last week in Brisbane it was party pies, brought a tupperware and stuffed about 20 pies into it. Yesterday in Sydney it was Tim Tam's.

Even though my membership is through QFF Gold I'll still always find a way to be a tight ass haha.

        • +7

I don't believe you that it was tupperware you sound too povo for it to be tupperware.

        • +2

          @random101:
          Might have been "topperware"

        • +3

Got them from Aldi special buys.

        • +2

@random101: He stolen it from his mum's cupboard. cost $0 (but it still has a bandaid with his name on it from school days)

      • +3

Was in the Virgin lounge the other month in the bathroom. Whilst washing hands the other bloke stole the $20 top of the range hand wash into his case!

Lounges are mass free for alls.

    • The other part of the value equation is how many magazines you're able to take with you.

      • +2

90% of the magazines they have are weird and are magazines I would never read

        • +1

Don't need to take magazines anymore…. they give digital copies to you for free.

Best part about flying Qantas is you get access to PressReader for 12 hours before your flight, so login, download all the magazines you want and you can read them any time. Heaps of popular magazines are on there ie, Money, QC, PC Authority, APC, Mens Health.

        • +3

That's because mini2 took all of the good ones.

        • +5

          @crazycs:

Almost all public libraries in Australia offer this. Not limited to 12 hours either. Download through Zinio rather than PressReader.

          https://www.rbdigital.com/wapldmc/service/zinio/landing?

        • @GaelicAU:

Thanks for the tip, the last time I went to my library was 2002 but will take a trip today ;)

        • @crazycs:

no need to take a trip, just join online - Melbourne Library Service, Zinio :)

        • @tonester:

          Signed up, thanks :)

    • Depends on if you place any value in having extra baggage allowance.

      • and do you still get business check-in counter access even if flying economy Intenational?

        • Only the dedicated Qantas Club counters can be used internationally (and only for QF operated and marketed flights).

  • Wow.. this is cheaper than corporate pricing. Definitely a great deal. IMO, QF Club is worth it, both domestic and international. In America, Admiral lounge loves QF club members. This is coming from personal experience when flying domestic within America for nearly 3 months.

    • Admiral lounge loves QF club members

      They must love Aussie 🐔

  • Does membership mean they'll open the bar early?

  • BEWARE: You will only get access if your Flight is on a Qantas or Jetstar flight
"Access a Qantas Club when their next flight the same day is a Qantas or Jetstar marketed flight (that is, with a Qantas (QF) or Jetstar (JQ, 3K, BL or GK) flight number on their ticket"

Bugger was going to buy but refuse to fly Jetstar and hardly ever fly Qantas

    • +3

You don't have to actually fly with them, you just need a ticket 😉

      • i once considered buying the latest & cheapest saturday night flight, going to the airport and having a party in the lounge then not actually getting on the plane…. hehehe

      • Meaning? You buy a refundable ticket? Cancel before flight departs?

      • +1

Yeah, you can just do this. Free lounge access for the whole year.

        https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2014/01/genius-man-used-one-first…

        • I hope he did not park his car at the airport while he was in the lounge! Would have cost him a small fortune.

  • +2

I've noticed the domestic lounges get crapper over time. For me in particular the cutting some of the better sandwich ingredients like mushrooms, and about 6 months ago cutting the cheese platter from the main buffet area.

I'd never pay for it especially if you can get the free lounge passes from all the first-year-free credit card offers here.

    • Dunno. I think they have always been fairly consistently crap but I could definitely name some improvements

      • Barista Coffee
      • Toastie Machines (yes I admit it is ridiculous that this is considered an improvement)
      • Pancake Machine
      • PressReader (although I think everyone gets this??)

Also on reflection the bar is very good, particularly the Chivas. Good selection of beers - Boags Premium, Heineken etc.

I tried the Virgin Lounge once. I was impressed by a pot of risotto (Qantas really does nothing resembling a hot meal) but it otherwise seemed a poor cousin. The bar was very average and no spirits at all.

      • Toastie Machines (yes I admit it is ridiculous that this is considered an improvement)

You are the first person I've ever heard say that. Everyone I speak to (in & out of QC) think it's the best think they've done for year. Ham & Cheese toastie is the perfect accompaniment to a beer &/or scotch

        • I love the toasty machine! I said it's an improvement. The disclaimer is that the lounge is often viewed by those outside the doors as luxurious and aspirational. It's just funny to have a toasty machine as a highlight.

        • @LoopyLou: ah sorry misunderstood.

      • In that case things have gone really crap then?
When I was gold there already were things like the pancake machine and toastie for years. Only in the last 1-ish they've cut back on all these things I've noticed. I'm WP now so if "adding" a pancake machine back in is good then that's not a good sign …
(which is exactly my original point)

  • +1

Lots of employers let you salary sacrifice this too, so you can save 10% gst + marginal rate of tax.

  • +1

Been a long time since I'd seen the price of outright membership costs.

Makes my lifetime gold seem much more valuable now.

    • Lifetime gold huh? Fancy …
      Lucky you :)

(I'll still be a while huhu)

      • +2

I'm 8900/14000SCs….. another decade and i might hit Lifetime Gold.

  • +8

If you fly often enough to make this worth it, your status credits will put you in Gold anyway where you get complimentary access.

  • Bought 4 years, thanksssssssss OP.

  • Can this be stacked with the ANZ QF Black offer that reduces the joining fee?

    • what joining fee? search ozbargain for free joining method.

      • Free club joining fee? QFF has free joining but not sure I've seen free club membership

    • Unlikely. Used to work for QFF, the ANZ Black Card rate was a special corporate discount and it wasn't possible to combine a corporate joining fee with an individual yearly fee.

  • +1

As you can bring a guest I'm going halves with a mate so it'll cost both of us only $270 each for a year. We do a bit of interstate travel to sporting venues so it'll make it a bit more fun now.

    • +2

As long as you always go together.

      • +1

And always fly QF or JQ

        • +6

          And don't wear thongs

        • @iforgotmysocks:

Interesting fact, if you look closely at the sign you will note that Men's Birkenstocks are okay but Women's are not.

      • Yeah we go to NRL games.

  • +3

they used to have one of payment of life membership, that was the good days!

    • Yeah it was quite good value. I think the same price as buying 7-10 years or so. One guy claims he paid $600 in 1992.

Virgin still have lifetime at $9,750 which is circa 20 years worth. Not worth it IMO considering opportunity cost and the fact that any decent flying will get it complimentary anyway.

    • +2

Yeahh i am gun shy on these "lifetime" — I still have two Ansett Golden Wing lifetime memberships lol. Also bought a 5 year Pan Am clipper club membership right before they pulled out of Australia.. At least United honoured it

    • +1

Anyone want to buy my lifetime Ansett Golden Wing Club Membership?

Plenty of spare lounge passes as well if you're interested.

  • Is the provision of lounge facilities linked to the cost of a ticket? ie does ticket price subsidise lounge access? Or, do lounge membership fees completely cover the provision of lounge facilities?

    • +2

You pay Qantas money for the privilege of being locked into only flying Qantas.

They are laughing all the way to the bank in every way. The lounge costs them bugger all compared to taking your cash two ways.

    • +1

Yes it is linked in that lounge access comes with business and first class tickets.
