  • When does this go on sale?

    • Should go one sale from the 9th of August. It was released as part of next weeks catalogue.

      • +1

        September :)

  • -1

A fairly impressive list of features let down be a 3/4 screen res.

    • +2

It seems more 16:9 to me. :S

      • Lol, there's no place here for those fancy mathematics, pal! ;)

      • I mean in functionality, not aspect ratio. Should have thought about someone (probably most people) interpreting it as such. Oh well.
At 17.3 I would expect at least FullHD

        • Fair comment; I just don't think there's that many 17" 1080p panels around!

Plus, at this screen size you'd be hard pressed to spot a difference, due to limitations of human visual perception! ;)

      • +1

Well you'd hope so with a res of 1600 x 900 for it to be 16:9

        • +1

I'm still not sure which algorithm you guys are using to calculate that AR? :p

  • had 2 medions, price was excellent for what they were but your better off putting another 4-500bux and gettin a proper brand i had nothing but problems with the medions and will never buy another one again

    • +1

I bought my sister a 12" medion from aldi 1.5 years ago for $999 and it's still going strong :)

of course it's not as shiny as other 12" laptops which probably sold for $2000+ back then, but it's pretty solid, no problems whatsoever

  • Who thinks this deal is better than the current harvey norman acer deal?

    • which is?

    • +4

I don't think you can really compare these two deals as the laptops differ by their physical size. Certain people would be after a 14", whereas others would be after a nice big 17".

    • +1

17" vs 14" screen on acer. 14" can be a bit small unless you want that size.
More ram, better CPU and dedicated graphics on Acer gives it a big power advantage over the Medion.
Acer cash back can be a problem unless they have changed their ways of late?
They are two very different laptops.
Figure out the features you want in one then find a dealer and tell him what you are happy to pay, there and then. You will have to live with it for a while so best to get one you would be happy with.

      • Acer cash back can be a problem unless they have changed their ways of late?

Have you got a source to back this up? I've never known of anyone getting stiffed by Acer on a cashback; unless you count forgetting to send it in! :p

Yeah, sometimes it can take a little while, they batch them monthly IIRC, so you might be lucky & get it in two weeks (as I have experienced), or maybe more (as I have also experienced), but you'll get it!

    • Both are brutal in size, though the Acer could still fit in a backpack. I don't think many would want to use the Medion on the go. Specs of the Medion do seem to be generally lower, but may be adequate. The Medion seems to have its huge screen as its main plus.

    • acer of course. it has an i5 and dedicated graphics. just that you have to wait a couple of weeks to months to obtain your cashback.

  • $799 for i3 + intel hd graphics(shared graphic?)
    not so tempting

  • For "da1andonly"
For an extra $100 you get a lot more computer…..

      Warranty: 12 Month HP Australia

Yup, here's your problem. Someone set this thing to "Evil"! :p

      • Wow. That reference is a blast from the past!

        • Yeah, sad but true! Our IT dept has a pile of in warranty DV6s that the service agent can't get HP to supply mobos for! Some things just don't change! :o

It's just like I pulled 'em outta the DeLorean! :p

          • @StewBalls: funny our entire fleet over 12 sites is all HP and in the last 18 months I havent had one fail(that includes desktops and notebooks), previous place i worked at was all Acer and it was a weekly drop off to the service centre, I knew the Acer repair blokes well enough i thought id get invite to weddings LOL HP hasnt been bad for us, guess it depends like anything you can get lemons with any company.

            • @WhiteEvo6: Yeah, weird eh? We were using HP/Compaq for a while, not too many dramas at first; but they had a few (well known) bad batches of DV5s & DV6s & refused to own up to it; and still do…that's the issue, yeah you're right, you do get the occasional lemon; it's not just the overall reliability of the equipment per se, but the ignorant, head in the sand attitude of HP Australia (in particular) to fixing their own mistakes!

Now, conversely, in the last year & a half or more we've moved over to Acer (mainly trialled due to bang for buck initially) for most of our PC hardware, and never looked back. Not a single laptop of the dozens I see has broken down, period! I don't profess to seeing all for the entire group, but it's not surprising though, there are no known issues with any of the Acer models we use (or any to my knowledge).

True, there were some teething problems with the monitors due to (known) flawed firmware, including my work & personal ones…now, here's the kicker, Acer (unlike HP) owned up to the problem, fixing ours, even a couple out of warranty (it's just a FW flash, but not user serviceable)! They come to your door, pick it up, take it away & it comes back a week later fixed, no mess, no fuss!!!

I also have a good relationship with our IT guys (as a recovering geek myself) & the HP service agent (nice, honest guys); they all report the same thing, known, documented issues that HP just keep dragging out hoping the warranty will expire & the problem will go away without replacing expensive motherboards! It's been their SOP for a while now! The great oracle, Google, will reveal all! ;)

  • i fail to see the point of this computer

17" DTR with an Intel integrated video???

surely if you're willing to go this size you want an ATI or Nvidia adapter so the video is at least good to justify the size and weight?

    • +5

Not necessarily, a lot of people just want a desktop replacement that's semi-portable (well, still very portable actually, IMHO), offers respectable screen size & decent specs, without the need to run games or anything particularly GPU intensive! ;)

I know this may come as a shock, but there are actually some people who use their computers productively!!! Yeah, they're weirdos; but it takes all kinds, eh? :p

FWIW though, the newer Intel GMA 5700MHD embedded in the i3 is noticeably superior to the older 4500MHD; it will do some basic gaming, and no problems with HD video! :)

      • +3

i paid extra for a discrete graphic laptop last year and it's 100% regrets… all it does for me is drain my battery lol.

btw the sandybridge integrated GPU is going to be 2 and 4X the performance of the current 5700MHD according to Anandtech. It'll be faster than current low end discretes.

        • +1

          And increase noise :(

That's what is so neat about models with switchable graphics; can shut off the power-hungry GPU when it's not required.

  • Interesting option for people who want a big cheap laptop with a 17" screen. Rest of the specs are pretty much what you'd expect from a $700-800 model from major retailers (e.g. Acer i3-350 for $697 from The Good Guys).

  • 17" screen sounds great until you see the low resolution. Give it a miss I reckon.

  • TBH I don't thats such a great deal for ab i3 cpu…. If it was i5 then defo!

    • +3

Post a better price than vote neg.

    • The difference between i3 350M and the entry level i5 430M is a whole 12% automatic overclock.

I'd hardly think its worth paying >$100 for.

    • Phillip Comment valid, But vote not - if you are to vote negative understand what it does and how its to be used . Its not like other sites. If you play here please play by our rules. Thank you

      Read it please

      • If you play here please play by our rules.

I'm sooo tempted to neg you right now ozpete; just for not saying It's my way or the high-way! :p

  • I have a 17.3" Asus core 1.5 K72F - think you can get them for around $900… + 1 for the screen size… :)

  • +1

Nice machine, you can always plug in a better screen.

But I wouldn't ever buy anything this complex from Aldi - their customer service is terrible. If something goes wrong with this then you're going to have to fight them for a warantee.

    • Well, I must admit I have experienced this very personally in the past, having had a very nasty, protracted (completely unnecessary) battle with a regional manager over what should have been a routine warranty claim; so I'm extremely wary of big ticket Aldi purchases myself! ;)

That said, by all reports their standards have improved to the point where they are actually adhering to consumer protection legislation/guidelines now; so hopefully FT/ACCC involvement should be minimal! :p

Sage advice though, I remain cautious myself!!! ;)

  • intel hd graphics? what a pity~seems like a machine for Video/office only, not for gamer
