been that price for at least a week at my local bunnings

still the same poor quality mix ad mulch as before - cheap for a good reason but mix is good for mixing into soil and mulch for areas where fines won't be an issue

    • +9

areas where fines won't be an issue

      Um what?

      • +26

Yea watch out for the soil police lol

        • You make jokes now…….just give it a year or two.

There are already plant police in the U.S. persecuting people who have the 'wrong' lemon trees or have their veges planted in the 'wrong' part of their yard according to local 'councils'. :) (I kid you not)

          @EightImmortals:

I got tazered for pruning my hedge once.

        • +1

@Scab: Not in the date I hope?

        • +3

@EightImmortals: A lemon date tree; I can see that being certainly a by-law offence. I know that police are watching Pine trees closely for drug offences, as they always seem to drop their needles.

          Ill go now.

Not in the date I hope?

No, they got me right in the prune.

        • @EightImmortals: What are you talking about?

        • @Meconium:

Hirsute anus, I think. Not sure whether pruning there, or tazered there!

        • @strangeloops66: I meant his earlier comment about plant police in the US!

        • @Meconium:

          Ohhhh!

The potting mix is termite bait!

Was a nightmare for our garden!

  • +17

1 cubic metre of dry wood chips weighs approximately 380kg
22 litres of dry wood chips weighs approximately 8.36kg

45.45. bags to a cubic metre.

    $2 per bag

So buying a cubic metre of these equates to $90.9

    Buy this instead.

It's delivered and termite resistant :)

And if it wasn't for @OP for posting this "deal", I wouldn't be any the wiser to this, so big ups to you BuzzLightyear :)

Thanks for the post, sometimes I think it's a good buy coz of the +votes from Ozbargain, but I'm also conscious too many Ozbargain deals people just click the like button without any knowledge of the product.

086: your link takes us through to your individual session. Showed us how much soil and mulch you already had in your shopping cart

    • Two different products. I prefer the 'pine bark' look, but good to have a different option. It's probably be a better (not sure if cheaper) than the sugar cane mulch.

    • Any similar alternative recommendation for the potting mix?

  • +4

Although cheap, this is horrible quality and wouldn't use it again for a potting mix

    • +2

Advice I got from Bunnings is you need to mix with a fertiliser like dynamic lifter or blood and bone.

Still cheap even if you mix it, decent potting mix is around $10/bag.

I just picked up half a dozen bags of mix for a planter box.

        Advice I got from Bunnings

The only good advice you ever get from Bunnings is which way to the exit.

        • +1

Or which way is the toilet… ;)

          @BuzzzLightyear:

It's Bunnings, I just use one of the aisles, usually in the plant section.

        • @Scab: organic fertiliser?

      • +4

I mix it in equal parts with Bunnings' $3.95 Cow Manure Blend, and $3.95 Richgro compost.
Maintain with Seasol and Powerfeed. You could add some blood and bone also.

        • Don't forget to add some molasses and if you can "worm tea".

Throw in a fish tank air stone and let it bubble for a day or two

        • +1

          @sirs2k:

Yep, actively aerated compost tea is the way to go, but let's keep it simple for now ;)
And you're spot on, molasses should be added every time you add any fertiliser to feed the microbes!
(Teaming with Microbes is the book to read!)

  • I've used the bark for my courtyard and it's still going strong 2 years later. It was the larger stuff would def buy again.

Buying in bulk is great but if you only have small area this is good value.

  • +1

Oakleigh south doesn't have this product. As usual a rude response that this product is not available from staff.

    • Lol how did they say it in a rude way? (just curious)

      • "this product isn't available here" - yours truly, ex-Dick Smith employee.

  • Anyone have suggestions for bulk buying mulch in Melb?

    • Google "sand and soil Melbourne"
      second on the list
      Garden mulch is listed

Might have to call/visit a few for what specific tree mulch you need

    • if you need 5 cubic meters or more you can try try https://www.mulchnet.com/

They have free/paid services where tree loppers will deliver it to your address.

I paid around $200 for 13 cubic meters as I didn't want to wait last time.

I think the bigger mulch places sell $40-80/cubic meter excl delivery so it's a win-win for you and the tree lopper!

    • Call tree lopers working in your area or even better if you see some working go up and ask them how much for a truckload of chipped wood. If they're already doing a job close by and they don't have someone/somewhere lined up to dump the stuff they should be happy to get rid of a truckload for $50-100. It can be a bit a little bit dicey as some may not tell you exactly what was cut up and chipped but most are good and will tell you.

  • did anyone else get a new variety of weeds after using this potting mix?

    • +5

not the weed i was hoping for

  • +1

Bear in mind the everyday price of this mix is less than $3.

$2.40 at my local Bunnings everyday except today when it is $2.00

  • We bought 3 bags of the mulch today but the comments about the termite has me thinking now if it's a good idea to use it :S

Would've bought potting mix too to mix in with our existing "soil" but the store looked to be out of stock.

  • bought a few yesterday.
    Thank You OP.

  • The pine bark mulch is still $2. Bought some today

    • I got some yesterday too. It was only enough to cover half of what I needed so hopefully its still there today!
