  • How does this compare to MSE?

    MSE is supposebly pretty good.

    Anyways good post.

I'm not a huge fan of AVG. Maybe it can be tweaked for better performance, but out of the box it's such a resource hog. I've had at least five people recently complain that their brand new supposedly super-fast computer seems to run slower than their old three, five or ten year old computer it replaced. Most of them assumed it was Windows 7 slowing things down, but in fact it always turned out to be AVG slowing things down.

Just yesterday a friend brought over his quad-core 2.1 GHz computer with 2GB RAM so I could help install a new video card. His computer just seemed to crawl. Next to a 1.6 GHz Atom netbook the quad-core machine looked like it was really struggling to do anything, even loading a basic web page was slow. I noticed the hard drive was thrashing about and couldn't figure out why. The only process running was AVG. My friend said the computer gets slow about midday every day and stays slow for about four hours, then it speeds up again. He then told me if he leave the computer turned off then turns it on again, said it's very slow for about four hours.

Turns out he installed AVG antivirus on it, and the thing is scheduled to scan the ENTIRE system EVERY day at midday. There doesn't seem to be a setting to make it ONLY scan new files. It was also set to start a new scan if it missed the midday schedule, so if he didn't have the computer turned on at midday, it would start the scan at 8pm or whenever.

I looked through lots of settings and couldn't find any way to turn off scheduling without turning off everything. Maybe I was doing something wrong but after stuffing around for two hours I just gave up, uninstalled AVG and installed Avira, which made the computer feel like it was brand new again.

It's possible the paid version is much better than the free version which my friend had. It might have an option to only scan new files and ignore ones that have already been scanned, which the free version doesn't seem to do. I don't care, there's no way I'd ever pay for something that slows down a system that much. Even with Avira running a full system scan the computer wasn't slowed down much and was perfectly usable, but with AVG it just CRAWWWLED…

Thats strange, I've got AVG on a few machines here and it runs fine. It might use some megabytes of memory but thats about it. When i installed version 9 it allowed you the option to turn off automatic scans. Its under Advanced AVG Settings, Schedules. Perhaps your friend got a fake version somehow

      • +1

agreed it runs like a dream, better than Nortons or Mcaphees that use up so much memory, AVG just sits in the taskbar and you cannot tell you have AV installed until it finds somethign and thats how it should be, if anyone thinks AVG is slowing a machine down, I think you are pointing the finger at the wrong app. Been running it for years myself

    • +4

I've been using the free version of AVG for years without problem.

Right now in my Windows 7 machine there are 5 AVG processes running using a total of 0% CPU and about 3-3.5MB of memory. Not exactly a resources hog.

Updates to the virus definition database are at least 2-3 times a day.

greenie4242, you need to look a bit closer at the easy to access settings. You can uncheck the option if you don't want the scan to run at startup if a scheduled scan has been missed.

You can easily turn off scheduling without disabling other AVG components, or if you like set it to scan on a particular day of the week or month.

I find the settings very flexible. You will find nearly every setting you will ever need to suit your preferred configuration, you just need to look (not very hard).

greenie4242, if you have brand new computers running slower than 5-10 year old computers then you have some other issue going on there.

    • +3

ive used AVG for years on xp, vista, 7. Not a problem… probably the best free anti-virus compared to avira and avast (in my opinion).

    • +2

no probs here with AVG… just disable the scheduled scans once installed, and let the resident shield do the rest (personally i don't understand why this isn't default… who needs to re-scan the computer every [other] day if you're not confident on the performance of an anti-virus product).

Be aware that the computer needs to update to the latest scan databases and then do an initial scan before it's all hunky-dory, so this may account for some of a system slow-down…

Also of note is that this excludes the firewall component. I personally use AVG Internet Security on my main comp's where i do sensitive stuff like banking, but for the old netbook, MSE does great.

  • +4

They do a perfectly respectable FREE version anyway…

    http://free.avg.com/au-en/homepage

    Home user license…

I have NEVER had a problem with resource usage in any of the computers I have installed it on (and I work in IT). Nor have I ever had a virus…

  • where do i download it?

    direct link please?

  • is AVG good again? I remember that either 7 or 8 caused a lot of trouble on people's computers and made a lot of people switch from them to other programs.

    • Yeah AVG 8 caused alot of problems and had people switching away. Most sites are back to recommending AVG since 9 came out though.

      • Linkscanner was the problem as it did exactly what it says. It works fine for a few people but multiply it by a few million and it caused a big spike in overall internet traffic. It's supposed to be fixed but I still choose not to install it.

  • Thanks.

  • Any legitimate freebies are usually good deals since it's cost nothing. However, I wouldn't install AVG on my PC again…it couldn't protect my PC and when I infected viruses etc…. I have to pay for the full supported version.

I have installed eScan Internet Security on the PC at present and it was just perfect!! Much much better than any other Anti-Virus programs I have tried.

I should contact them and see if they are willing to give ozbargain a free version :)

    • +1

No antivirus program is 100% effective against malicious software.

AVG is one of the most widely used antivirus software so there are always going to be users that are infected.

      • So… common AntiVirus programs are targeted by viruses, and small AntiVirus companies often have incomplete definitions. An annoying loop, if you think about it.

        • +1

It's sometimes the case computers are infected by new types of malware even before the malware has been "discovered" and added to definition databases.

Most people blame the antivirus program when they get infected, although a lot of the time it's due to their unsafe online habits/practices.

  • +4

yay. world exclusive!!! for all the people of earth.
    Suck on that Martians!

  • What advantage does AVG have over the free MSE from Microsoft?
    http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
This AVG version requires further actions when it expires in 12 month time.

    • +1

no advantage apart from feeling safer because you used a paid version of antivirus.
By the way, the MS antivirus really rocks plus it's free.

  • I used to use AVG on my home PC but it failed to protect my PC on more than one occasion. I now use Avast and have been very happy with it.

    Still a great deal though.

    • +1

same though some people may not like avast because it prompts you every year to renew the free code :P
It's something I can put up with

I have no problems with AVG and think people should take advantage of it even for that simple fact that securing your pc is a smart thing to do.

I've used avg in the past and its been good and one of the better ones I have used. Avast on the other hand seems to suit my needs better.

  • +1

Dear all, how often our PCs get infected by viruses these day… it's the spyware and spam we should be worries about…..

    • +2

      ransom ware is the worst!

    • +1

Your computer wouldn't be infected if you applied the internet filter. It's the spams and scams coming from the portal!

  • By my calculations 1pm AEST is when it kicks off. Corrrrrect??

    • It's 1:45pm now, it's still not available

      • Still not up????

        • in 6 hours time

          MIDDAY CET or 8pm AEST

  • avg free is not allowed you to unload it from memory temporarily (for example when you try to crck something, and the keygn is detected by avg as virus but infact its just a keyg*en)

    • AVG allows you to temporarily disable it very easily. http://www.ehow.com/how_5052104_disable-avg-antivirus.html

      • according to step 3:
Uncheck "Resident Shield Active" under the Resident Shield settings section, then click "Save Changes." This will disable the Resident Shield but keep the Email Scanner and other virus protection features active.

other virus proctection —> still active. already tried this and also alot people had the same problem. AVG remove this feature in the latest version because it is misleading people think the virus scan is inactive but it is still running

        • Go to Tools > Advanced settings > Resident Shield > Excluded files > Add > select keygen file > Open > Apply > OK.

          Easy!

  • I still prefer MSE, light-weight, easy to use and picks up viruses that weren't showing in symantec lol

  • Great deal. Love AVG!

  • This is active now

  • still not available for download

    EDIT: yes, active now

  • Downloading : )

  • Question, do you need to uninstall AVG free before you install this version?

    • No you don't have to, but preferable.

      • thanks, mate.

  • 'Insert the code within AVG Anti-Virus 9 and you'll have 30 days to register your software with AVG. '

Looks like we are given 30 days to install this, otherwise, it is not going to work. Any confirm? I haven't installed it yet.

  • where can i get the CD key ?

  • I can't seem to activate mine for a year?

    • Yeah same problem, did the steps as normal.

You just got to register from the AVG site manually like they said below, if you've already put the temp serial number in during the installation process than once installed simply goto Help on the menubar, and "Activate" and then replace the temp serial number with the new proper serial number AVG sends you in your email. You should be set for 1 year :)

  • anyone sucessfully install it yet? i wonder if if its going to work for people in oz or if its only for the EU?

  • +1

yup i've installed and activated my key :)

you need to go the the actual avg site and register the key THEN avg will send you another KEY to input into the installation screen :)

    • Yes, there are two keys, a final key will send thru email from AVG after register.

  • ya just worked for me too.. go to http://www.avg.com.au/registration/ and register

  • very happy with my first scan, I had some crap spyware tracking cookie on my comp and I couldn't remove it with avg free. After i installed the full version it got rid of it :)

    wooot!

    • +2

Interesting. Both free and paid version should both pick up what you are talking about (they both contain the same anti-virus and anti-spyware components). The only extra physical scanning the paid version does is for rootkits.

      • maybe he forgot to update

  • I didn't download the AVG but I did try a couple of their other free license programs. Auslogics Boostspeed and iobit advanced system care.

Both seem to come with full licences, not sure if they run out, they don't look like they will. Probably not the most essential programs of all time but if you like "tuning" your pc, ie. registry, defrag, excess files and other tweaking cleaning etc. They do they job well.

Overall a + for the deal and site.

  • My License expires on 31/08/2011. Fantastic

  • thanks for this wonderful release

  • i have been using AVG for quite some time and it is good :)

  • I downloaded the serial from the site and when using it. AVG told me its temporary and needs to be registered to their site. Their site is giving error:

There was a problem looking up the details for this Licence Number.

An unknown error (sales) occurred, please contact us for further assistance.

    Am I doing something wrong?

    • site is down, prob from traffic overload :P

      just keep trying

    • no there's no major issue, just register manually from the AVG website (manually goto this link in a new browser), it won't work clicking through 'their' links.

      http://www.avg.com.au/registration/

enter your temp. serial code you received from v3.co.uk

then fill out some details on the next page, and AVG will send a proper serial key to your email address

now goto your AVG client, and click Help from the menubar and navigate down to "Active" or "Reactivate"
and replace the old serial with the new proper full serial code.

Or if you haven't installed yet, do that first (register with AVG) then use the proper serial code during installation. But since you got that error I assume you've already installed with the temp. serial code, so Reactivate from the main program.

      • +1

Thanks Cripto, registration worked from here.

  • -5

way too much effort…..sign up first, then download installer, which then downloads, then logon onto another website and get a temp key…..then use the temp key to register with AVG and get a full key and then put the key in during installation……..

I'll stick with Avira free thanks…….

    • +3

yea.. they should pay us, too ey?

      • +1

It always surprises me that people bitch about the effort but don't mind complaining about how much effort it takes. It's free dammit. You know what you should have done. Saved yourself the effort of typing that comment.

        • +1

I couldnt agree more ragflan. Some people are just so lazy these days! It actually wouldve taken more effort to write that comment than it was to download and register this great FREE product. Maybe its too mentaly challenging for some people :-/

          • @sk1ppy: Ease up fellas, just my personal opinion. No bitching, no moaning - just sharing my experience so others may make an informed choice whether to progress or not. Its not like I negged the deal!?!?! Sheesh!!!!!!

Appreciate the fact its free but it all comes down to one's preferences and time. I respect the fact that majority of people are happy to follow the steps involved, and good on 'em I say. For the small minority of mentally challenged, bitching, complaining and lazy people like me, I'd rather pay a little extra for the convenience. Again personal preference.

It astounds me that there is such intolerance for other people's opinions on this forum. Respect my brothers, respect!

BTW I give a positive for the other not-so-laborious freebies like Ashampoo etc. Great site!

        • -1

ragflan, i am not that dumb to register. I am using AVG for the first time and I was doing the right way to register that ( from their application), and as it is free, I wanted to share a comment, if someone has the same problem.
If you know more things, it is good for you, kindly spare ur time too for writing stuff here.

          • @EnALup: Sorry man. I was always under the impression that these things were pretty much straightforward. Didn't know it involved knowledge of rocket science and our collective shared thoughts.

    • "then use the temp key to register with AVG and get a full key and then put the key in during installation"

were u actually able to do this?? i used the temp key during the installation =\

  • Downloaded, installed, registered and activated….Sweet…My Norton 360 just expired couple of days ago and was looking for something…thanks heaps

  • Thanks for sharing, brilliant works like a charm…

  • WTF! while installing AVG anti virus 9, I was prompted to uninstall ZoneAlarm firewall. It says AVG is not compatible with ZoneAlarm. Is it just me?

    • Lol you should only have 1 antivirus installed.

      • hey, dude, read before jumping on me. I'm talking about ZA firewall.

    • Who uses ZoneAlarm still anyway? lol well if you're not happy with ZA then just use AVG, it is the full version after all and does last 1 year! with all the benefits.

It just feels better, then using say.. a cracked version.

      • Who uses ZA? Those who really know about computer security apparently. Good luck using AVG, I know there's tonnes of spywares out there that'll make short work of it. I'm using ZA firewall + webroot spy sweeper & antivirus (subscription). Haven't got any infection or problems since 2007.

      • Cripto, the real full version with all the benefits is actually AVG Internet Security, which includes Firewall, Identity Protection and spam protection.

Very cheap here at $17.00 (normally about $70.00):
        http://store.v3.co.uk/p1027-avg_internet_security_9_1-pc_1-y…

The normal paid version which this OzB deal refers to actually doesn't provide that much more protection than the free version. The main benefit is it includes technical support from AVG.

  • AVG is only average. You'd be better off with Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) + Zonealarm Personal Firewall. Throw in PcTool's Threat Fire if you're really paranoid. These 3 free softwares should make your PC very secure.

    • MSE such a resource hoooooooooog!

  • Where is the License/ Sale number for me to register?

  • lol tried to register the free key.. and this is what i got:

AVG Licence Renewals, Upgrades and Increases

    Your licence number: XX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
    Licence expires on:

There was a problem looking up the details for this Licence Number.

An unknown error (sales) occurred, please contact us for further assistance.

    More: http://www.avg.com.au/renew-upgrade-increase-landing/?licnum…

also, does anybody know how to download the full installer and not the 2MB web-downloader?

edit: wtf.. when u obtain the license number it gives you one in the form

    XX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXX

but when you actually enter in the program to activate, it chops off the last 4 characters……..
