$125 for Defensive Driving Course in Melbourne (Usually $250+)

100

Scoopon has a 24-hour deal for pre-purchasing a defensive driving course. You must purchase before 12pm 31 August, but vouchers are valid for any "Summer Defensive Driving Course" from Driver Dynamics (www.driverdynamics.com.au)

I rang and spoke to the company (Driver Dynamics) and they said they would put on more courses as necessary. The courses are usually held at Sandown Raceway, but are sometimes at Atwood, and sometimes at Calder, but that their first preference was at Sandown.

This deal has now been posted because the minimum number of orders has been reached.

Scoopon is an extension of catchoftheday.com.au I think

I wonder if this is @ Atwood or Sandown?

    • As stated in the details, most courses are at Sandown, but some might be at Atwood

They are using your own car? I don't like that.

The way I look at it, they are teaching YOU to drive YOUR CAR more safely, so this is the way they do it, by teaching you in your own car. It seems quite logical to me. They do it on wide open bitumen, not a tight and winding racecourse at 200km/h.

      • Mm, I agree. I mean I drive an automatic and would prefer to do this in a manual, though this is teaching good driving skills in your own car. I was actually planning to do this course anyway, so 125 plus bucks off is sweet. Epic deal thanks :D

      • Alot of Melbourne drivers need this ;)

shmahoo makes a good point. It's highly unlikely the car and equipment level would match between the driving course's vehicle and the student's daily drive. Therefore learning how to handle skids on someone else's vehicle is of limited value. Front versus rear wheel drive, automatic versus manual, engine size, vehicle weight, there are so many variations.

Plus using the student's own vehicle means the student is less likely to act like a complete turkey.

    • I think it would be better using their cars (or at least be given a choice). Apart from minimising wear and tear on your own vehicle it would be a rare opportunity missed to develop skills in a variety of vehicles of different sizes/handling. I'd like to feel my skills had been tested in different vehicles given drivers change vehicles at some time.

Also I don't have a vehicle with ABS or ESC (will likely get one in the near future) so would have to pay extra to drive a car with those features to feel that difference (control theory about the two can only get you so far).

If you can emergency brake properly in a car without ABS, you'll have no problems with a car that does have ABS. Just find a quiet road to do a couple of practices brakes to get a feel of the lock-up point. The only thing to keep in mind is that when ABS kicks in, you'll feel the pedal pulsing - that's normal.

Handling dynamics and forms of stability control vary greatly between cars, so doing one in a car (that isn't yours) with those features doesn't mean that it'll directly translate into the next car you buy. As an example, when I did my defensive driving course - which included numerous brake-and-swerve and skidpan exercises - I don't recall my traction control system kicking in at all.

It really is in your best interests to do a course in the car that you regularly drive.

        • Good to know. Since I'm likely to change cars in the near future might wait till then.

    What about the insurance?

I'm sure 99% of motor insurance states that it does not cover track use, and as this is track usage, without any insurance coverage you will be taking all the risk of breakage and also any potential liabilities.

    • For the $125 they can help you roll your injured car out to the road.

training courses like these aren't really on a road but more of a massive field of bitumen where you weave between cones and stuff like that.

i wish there was a discount on NSW courses!

  • This should be compulsory for anyone who has had a license for less than five years. I think it's a great idea - even for xmas presents for your kids!

I did this course at Sandown about 2 years ago. I can confirm this course is half a day of Classroom style theory. Then you hit the carpark area for the rest of the day.

At no time do you go on the race track.

But all in all, really good course. And the braking techniques has saved me and my car once making it a $250 bucks well spent.
