Nice but woulda preferred the redmi note 4X (5.5inch) :/

  • +1

I actually bought the 4X with DHL delivery only 2 days ago and thought about posting this same link for the 4X but didn't know if it was cheaper previously. Looking forward to it.

    • did u get the 5.5 inch note?

      • +1

Yes I did. Surprisingly the grey and black model was cheaper than the gold model that usually goes for less.

Bought a RN3SE (Kate) for my mrs some months back and was quite impressed by it. Hoping that won't get any warranty need with this one.

  • +2

that same store also has Redmi 4A for USD$90 apparently (code GWMF)

    • +3

redmi 4a isnt that great, redmi 4x is much better IMO

  • Redmi Note 4X AU$200 looks good,

Any idea how does warranty work with Ali express purchases ?

    • i dont think you have a warranty lol. if u pay via alipay apparently thats pretty decent though, you can open disoutes and stuff like paypal

      • +1

Ok thank you,, the 4X also has an IR blaster, so you can use it as a TV remote but strangely it doesn't say that anywhere in here.

      • +2

You can raise dispute like paypal, but don't expect anything like an adequate response. If it is faulty, you'll probably be offered a poor partial refund, and if it doesn't arrive then you'll get a shabby refund offer as well. I just don't buy from Aliexpress any more. I'd rather buy from gearbeat (despite their reputation) and at least have recourse to paypal.

        • +1

If the item doesn't arrive you don't get a full refund?

There's a big section claiming Buyer Protection:Full Refund if you don't receive your order. Maybe this will be my last biggish purchase from AliExpress.

        • +1

@x d: I have never had that particular result, only defective or mismatched goods, but I have heard from others that they have had less than satisfactory results when things haven't arrived (see http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1622257 for examples).

        • @2be8: Thanks for that. Just read the last few posts on that thread and it's a concern. Just as well the store Goldway gets some good comments in whirlpool, and I have paid for DHL express delivery (already on its way apparently) to get it here early and have some time to play with the phone before giving feedback.

One thing I noted was the "seller guarantee on time delivery # days" keep changing on the same page. Sometimes I see 28 days, now it's 60 days (doesn't apply to DHL delivery I supposed).

I have been buying from Geekbuying but this particular time that site did not offer DHL delivery for this phone.

        • @x d: yeah, I think it is a case where reputation (and not on site rating, but reputation amongst peers) is very, very important. And registered shipping :)

The Redmi Note 4X is a good price at $200.
I'm currently in Hong Kong and Xiaomi have a store (similar look to Apple) called 'Mi", they have this phone for $1099 HKD which is around $189 AUD.

The one 20 floors up in Hollywood Plaza? I was there a few months ago. Weird fact: One of the female staff there is from Sydney, full aussie accent and all. What are the odds?

      • +1

Is Hollywood Plaza in 上水? If so, might get my parents to get me one there.

        • +2

Sheung Shui? It's not there. The address is 610 Nathan Road in Mong Kok. You could easily walk past and miss it. There's no signage I saw on the ground floor to get to it, I had to ask. From memory the shop is on the 20th floor.

There's also a Mi store in Shenzhen if your parents are planning to jump across the border.

      • +1

Yep thats the one.. no signage no nothing… you have to go on a bit of a goose chase trying to ask and find it.
I found a full Chinese guy there born/bread in the UK who worked there. Naturally I asked a million questions and ended up buying Mi home items lol like towels haha

        • born/bread

          Born/bred

        • @ms: Thanks for the correction, your addition provided the biggest value to this post :)

        • @ezza:
          Glad to be of help.

    • Do you know if they (the official Xiaomi store there) posts to AUS? They might be more reliable for warranties

      • +1

I think you're always going to have warranty troubles with a phone that isn't officially released in this country and is being shipped from China.

    • The $1099 HKD price you're quoting.. is that the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X or just the Redmi Note 4?

      • 4X

  • +3

Warranty is basically non existent. Just went through a prolonged process via dispute with same seller. Excuse after excuse and aliexpress case management stepped in and offered a refund of US$25 for $250 phone. This is the 2nd phone I purchased through Goldway, 1st time around all good, 2nd an absolute nightmare.BTW different phone.

    • +2

seems like luck of the draw

    • +4

Anything disputes or warranty related claims for items of significant value on AliExpress - good f#(%!#@ luck.

Burnt too often - never again. PayPal FTW.

      • Totally agree, never again, save a couple of bucks not worth it.

  • Can't really find the answer I'm looking for but as I understand, band 28 = support for 4G. Being that the place I'm living in doesn't have Vodafone 4G anyway, it means not having band 28 isn't a problem - right?

    • +1

vand 28 is just a percentage of 4g, for you it wont matter lol just set the phone to 3g

    • +8

4g usually is available most places on band 3 (1800 MHz).

You can find out what bands are mostly used in your area and with each telco on this site.

      https://oztowers.com.au/Home/Query

You can also get extra information about the bands here

      https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/mobile_phone_frequencies

It seems this phone covers all the local 4g used ones except for band 28

Band 28 is mainly important for stronger coverage and it better penetrates inside buildings. So locations you mightn't get 4g coverage with the other bands you will with band 28. It also provide extra bandwidth and helps avoids congestion.

Also Vodafone doesn't use band 28.

      • +3

Great info, thanks. Very useful to check where your nearest mobile towers are and what bands they use.

      • Very useful that oztowers, Ronnie, and now I see how essential band 28 is- it's the only 4G at a lot of the towers near me.

  • Do either of these have a notification led?

  • The golden question.. Is there band 28 on the Note 4x?

    Other bonus questions..
    Dual SIM is 4G/3G?
How hard is it to flash a custom ROM?

    • +1

      no band 28
pretty sure its 4g/3g as both phones use new snapfragon modems
custom roms are plentiful for the note 4x

  • I do want to buy one but worried about the warranty and possible non delivery.

  • Curious during vacation time, whether the phone can be worked in Dubai and India?

    • yes these phones will fully work in Dubai and India, they are actually officially sold in those regions!

  • +3

This is a very low spec version.
There are sales on all the Xiaomi phones at present
    Note 4, Note 4X, Mi5, Mi5s

Nothing too special here, unless you must have a $150 phone.

If taking good photos is high on your list, none of the Redmi range is that great
The Mi5s is where good photos start.

Once again, it is all about price point for Xiaomi and its low economic markets
Saying that, you probably will not find much better for $150AUD

    • -6

the specs on the redmi 4x are basically the same as the iphone 7, except for the processor. Its a good backup phone. At 140 AUD you cant find anything better. Also the Mi 5 takes better photos than the 5s because it has OIS

  • What's the cheapest Xiaomi with NFC?

    • +2

i think the mi 5 (3/32gb) has been on sale for 270 in the past

  • It seems to be a nice all round phone for the price. The snapdragon 435 should drive the 720p display well, and 2gb is manageable. Cant expect more at less than $150. Having a better camera than redmi note 3/4 doesn't say much. Phones with this spec will do tasks like run games similarly to the snapdragon 650 powered phones using a 1080p screen for comparison sake. It'll be slower at loading and launching apps, but still good enough for the typical user.

This phone does seem similar to the popular redmi 3 pro that was around about a year ago but a little bit higher priced, and that used a snapdragon 616 and 3gb of ram. The thing about xiaomi they always have new models coming out. Hopefully a newer cheaper line using a more modern SoC based on 14nm process comes to this sub $150 price point. A 5 inch display with more energy efficient SoC could bring better battery life to an already incredible battery life phone.

The snapdragon 625 in the 4X is amazing chip, battery life should be amazing on that phone. The performance will be still great. The only downsides to these phones is band support, warranty, require some effort to flash a clean rom and the cameras are generally poor quality. These are the reason why you only pay $143, you can't expect better given the price and it's worth the comprises for some.

    • so true. camera is the main area these phones suffer but even then the camera is good enough for social media posts

  • what package to get? silicone glass or?

    • I just got the standard pack, I can buy tempered glass for cheaper separately on aliexpress later on

  • +3

    Snapdragon 435 GPU: Adren 505, 48.6 GFLOPS

More than enough to drive 720p.

    • yep the redmi 4x is pretty good for gaming, decent screen, decent GPU, decent build quality and size of iphone 7 but much bigger battery

  • The Redmi Note 4X comes up as $214 even with mobile app - how does the $10 off work?

    • when u fist open the app you click on a button to receive a coupon for 10 bucks

  • Is this better than the Redmi Note 3 Pro?

    • Battery life will be better due to the newer fab cpu.

Max cpu performance is lower due to the rn4x having only A53 cores. Camera arguably is also lower quality as it is only 13mp but I have read reports it actually takes better pictures.

It is also slightly lighter (about 10g lighter, I think).

      • camera on 4x is better than note 3 pro, the size of the pixels is bigger so they capture more light

        • The RN4X has a 13MP sensor vs the larger 16MP sensor on the RN3P. Both use f2.0 lens (presumably identical).

If there are to be differences in image quality captured, it has to come from a smarter auto software on the RN4X (in terms of setting the ISO value, shutter speed and white balance). I claim no knowledge on this however but I am not convinced it's because "the size of the pixels is bigger."

        • @dwinarto:
they use different lenses. the newer one has 1.12 micron pixels as opposed to 1 micron. all the epic phones use bigger pixels, the google pixel uses 1.55 micron pixels, thats why it has the no 1 camera!

        • @nathan-drake:
Could you please link me to this spec?

        • @dwinarto: on this page it says the camera has 1.12 micron size pixels. That site also has listings for other phones eg iphone, pixel

          http://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_redmi_note_4x-8580.php

    • I don't know much about the 4X, but it's probably much of a muchness between the two.

The mentioned difference between the processors doesn't factor in sustained performance. A big focus with the newer Qualcomm SoCs is being able to maintain performance by avoiding throttling. Newer process should help with sustained performance. However the snapdragon 625 overall performance is slightly below (not noticeable in real world use outside of gaming) that of the 650, and gpu is considerably worse. 180 GFLOPS vs 130. I'd say if you're a mobile gamer than the note 3 pro is a better choice for gamers. If you don't care to play games on your phone than you'll probably appreciate the better battery life the 4X will provide.

Typically newer models at same price point improve, so it probably has better camera, screen, build quality etc but it's best to do your own research. Sounds like the camera offers a nice improvement over the note 3 pro. If you already have a note 3 pro, it obviously not worth upgrading to this.

  • +1

hi OP, can you tell us the difference between the 4x note and the note 4 or note 3 pro/special edition?
thanks, i wana buy a sub 200 phone as a backup phone

    • -3

Why not do your own research?

      • +2

i did, apparently the 4x has a slower cpu but better battery life, some reviewers say it has a better screen and camera too but other reviewers did not even mention that, so I dont know if that accurate, but i want the op to confirm it since he seems to have a vast knowledge.
so yes I do my own research no need for you to tell me or anyone else, this is a comment section where anyone can ask questions about the product if they so desire, deal with it.

        • -5

but i want the op to confirm it since he seems to have a vast knowledge.

What makes you think that? All they did was provide links to a couple of YouTube reviews that weren't even in English.

I have no issue with anyone seeking genuine advice about deals posted here, but people are just lazy most of the time and want others to do their homework for them.

        • @cdestratis: if you actually did read all the comments you can see that the OP answers every question regarding the xiaomi phones so it does not hurt to ask, and i was not lazy I actually did search it, if i didnt search it you could say im lazy, and nothing wrong with being lazy but if you got nothing to contribute better to say nothing at all.

    • +1

hey striker bro, happy to help:

note 4 has a crappy mediatek cpu.
note 4x 5.5inch is the one to get, or redmi 4x 5inch is also good (both linked in the post). Note 3 is old now, not worth buying any more IMO, the camera on it is far worse than the phones linked above. Sure the note 3 has a good processor but its not that battery efficient.

      • thanks for the reply mate,
do you think its true that 4x has a better camera and screen than the note 4? its only mentioned in 2 reviews and the 4 other reviews i watched did not even mention it.

        • TBH I reckon the camera isnt much different on either, with software updates I think eventually the 5.5inch Redmi Note 4X will have a slightly better camera than the 5inch Redmi 4X. I dont think you can go wrong with either, I personally just want a compact 5inch phone, I'm getting sick of 5.5inch that I have atm.

  • Anything I need to be aware of buying a foreign phone?

    • +1

these phones have no warranty. So i suggest you go for the 5inch redmi 4x at $140-150, in case things go south. It is a decent all round phone that is the same size as an iphone 7 except its screen is bigger. The 5.5inch note 4x is a bigger investment at $200-210, so more risky, although it does have a better processor than its smaller 5inch brother

  • I'm not seeing the $10 off for the 4X. How do you get it?

    • when u first use the mobile app for aliexpress you get a coupon for 10 bucks

      • Oh ok. Thanks for the help fellow Nathan

  • Looking to replace a dying HTC M8 with one of these. How would it compare?

    • Redmi Note 4X will be an upgrade over the M8, especially in battery life and bezel size and likely camera too

  • +1

Awesome phone but dont buy it expecting great pictures…Camera is just average but better than the other phones as OP mentioned and it is not the main feature of this.
Not an issue for me but I see lots of ppl buying great phones and then complaining abt pic quality.

  • +1

I wonder whether you could make a claim through your bank in the event the goods don't arrive? Surely most platinum cards would cover you for goods not received?

  • The deal looks to be expired? It's $AU 180 now.

    • yeah expired at 5pm sorry bro, you missed out by a few minutes!

    • back on sale!!!

  • How long do Hong Kong Goldway take to confirm and ship? my payments been confirmed (amex) since 11am yesterday and I selected DHL shipping.

    • u should get it within the next 2-3 days
