Sennheiser HD600 $299, HD650 $349 @ Addicted to Audio

260

24/04/17 update
Prices back up for ANZAC day sale.

Previously part of Addicted to Audio Easter stock clearance sale from 5pm 13 April to 9:00am 18 April.

Current deal matches the historic cheapest price for these classic headphones since Store DJ sale last October. Local retail price for HD600 are around $350 and $400+ for HD650.
I've been following the prices on these headphones for about a year now and these prices are about as low as I've seen them.

Do note that it's strongly recommended to pair either of these with an amp (wall powered, not USB) as these headphones' sound quality scales nicely to extra power.

As a side note I've looked through the rest of AtA's Easter sale catalogue and TBH, these are the only items with an Easter sale discount. Slightly sleazy of them to sneak regular 'discounts' as part of an Easter special catalogue IMO.

  • Out of interest, why would you suggest not using a USB powered amp with these headphones?

    • Let me chime in on this, these headphones require a lot of juice to make them sing at it's potential. Without a proper head amp, it will sound lifeless. With the proper equipment, they can sound as good as $2000 headphones. :)

      • Not sure why you would get negged. These definitely need good amping to bring out their best.

    • USB powered amp usually do not have enough juice to drive these kinds of high impedance headphones well.

    • tntman and Danny are right on that.

But i should probably add every usb amp, other than the Geekout V2 with balanced output. Though you'll have to dig fairly deep down the audiophile rabbit hole to know this.

  • Can I run these on the LG v20?

    • -1

Yes, but like running on only one cylinder though.

    • I couldn't find any hard specs on the amp figures so I'm gonna make a guess.
It'll probably be alright. Not as good as a $400 DAC/amp combo but nearly there.

    • You're going to have sound quality deficits (defeating the point of buying these in the first place) and volume issues - unless you buy a headphone amp with appropriate power output.

    • HD598 will sound better than HD600, if not properly amped.
Minimum $200 of a object 2 amp is required to match HD600's potential.

  • The problem is … Massdrop's HD6XX at US$200 (+ ship) - I'm betting on the second drop.

    • +1

It's the price of having them in a couple of days vs in god knows when+2 months for Massdrop to ship though. Also if it's anything like last time they'll sell out almost instantly and you'll have no hope unless you're sitting there waiting for it.

      That's if it even happens.

    • The sound of Massdrop always makes me think they get a crate containing massive amounts of items and then drop it from the stratosphere. Whatever survives the fall is what's being firesold. That's just the inescapable impression I keep getting whenever I hear their name.

Any deal on the new Sennheiser BT4.5NC? Apollo Hifi has them for $266 pick up from Marrickville…

  • HD600 or HD650? Which one has more detail?

  • +1

Good price, picked up a pair of HD650 for $380 during a recent ebay sale. Excellent cans, extremely detailed with a very decent and refined low end for open backs, and the highs roll off nicely making them great for long session listening without fatigue.

  • Is HD600 based on HD598? Is the +002 a big upgrade?

I've got 598s and going by this thread, neither the 600s or 650s sound much better.

      • But are they supposed to be better or just different? Ala DT880 vs DT990.

The nomenclature of headphone lines is always confusing.

I have DT990 and Tesla T90. Please someone tell me I'd only be wasting my money. I don't know how much more headphones my wallet can take.

The 598 was as low as $130 a few months ago I think. I'm kicking myself for not getting a pair back then, though I'd convinced myself I didn't need one. I'd much rather buy them at that price, than HD600s at $300.

        • Well apparently they sound better with a good amp… But Sennheiser themselves said they just sound a little warmer. IMO you'd just be wasting your money.

@elementzer0: Thanks. That's what I wanted to hear.

Having both owned headphones from both companies (DT880, T1 and HD600)…neither is better. They're different. Senn has the relaxing put you to sleep sound, non fatiguing but neither very engaging. Beyers crank treble levels to give it abit more airiness and sense of detail, which also introduces sibilance.

Going back and forth when the senns are on - i miss the airyness of the beyers. With the beyers on - i always stumble on a song with too hot treble.

Gun to head I'd take a T1 (or a DT880 since its sound sig is 90% of the T1) and EQ the FR by about 5db in the 8k region. Get a good parametric eq like EasyQ for foobar and save yourself hundreds. When corrected for 'errors' (based on my preference) the beyers have better instrument placement and has wider soundstage overall. It's just easier to eq down the sibilance on the beyer than to try and add detail to the senns.

As for amps- my HPA-2, yamaha aventage A3000 and a fiio e18 all sound the same. I doubt anyone will tell the difference in a double blind test.

        • @krisspy: As someone who has DT880s you just saved me $300. I've always wondered if I should also get a pair of HD600s at some point even though I did A/B them when I got the 880s. I'll save my pennies for DT1990s instead ;)

        • @krisspy: Between the Senns and the Beyers, which are more comfortable?

I found the DT990's band to not extend far enough for my head. The T90 extended just enough, but I would prefer an extra click of leeway.

        • @lostn: My head is pretty normal in size so both fit fine, i have maybe about 3 or 4 clicks left on the T1. Clamping on the senns are a little bit tighter and the foam used is a little firmer. The circular shape of the T1 might also help distribute the pressure in less sensitive areas and its less cramped. T1 > HD600 > DT880 imo. The 880's are too shalllow and my ears touch the drivers

        • @bioxeed: Definitely have a good audition for the 1990. If thats the successor to the T1 then it better have major changes :). I got my T1 for ~$700 new when ebay had their first worldwide sale. I honestly didn't think it was worth double of what i got the 880's for. Im sure im not the only one to say that it's 90% of what the T1 is sound wise. The DT880's were very a competent and popular set of cans, probably why beyer doesn't want to veer too far off it's sound signature.

        • @krisspy: For sure. The 880s I have are a pair from the original design from back in 2005. Aside from a couple of sets of pads and 1 headband pad it's still going strong. It's definitely going to be a tough act to follow. I tried a pair of T70s at one point but even then I ended up back on the 880s. Though going by Beyers release of the 1770 followed by the 1990 you have to wonder if there's an 1880 in the works.

  • Can guarantee there is quite a bit more than just these two on sale! Have put over 400 items on much larger discounts than usual 😀

    • Any recommendations?

      • Most of the Sennheiser range, the Sony MDR 1000x, some fostex, ultrasone, yamaha, Final, Shure earphones, Auralic, ALO and Astell and Kern products.

  • Good deal! I've been wanting to get HD600 since I jumped into the rabbit hole many years ago…

  • +1

Any decent portable amp on sale?

    • Does the Astell & Kern AK10 work with iPhone 6s+?

  • I use HD650 for music production, recommended!

  • Both prices back up for Anzac day only!
