Massdrop X Sennheiser HD6XX Headphones $199.99 USD (~ $260 AUD) + ~ $19.50 AUD Shipping

200

A new upcoming drop from Massdrop x Sennheiser featuring the HD 6XX. The HD 6XX are supposedly a new revision of the Sennheiser's old flagship model, HD 650, but set at a lower - consumer friendly price point. Although considered a revision, the HD 6XX shares the same lovable sound of the HD 650 as the driver structure and sound signature have not changed.

      • Ah, I blame it on not having coffee today!

Shipping should be about $15 USD… Have a pair of AKG K7xx but this is tempting

    • Cheers, I'll have it updated once it is announced - just in case.

    • +1

Why not just skip the memephones, sell the AKGs and put the money from both towards an actual upgrade?

      • -1

        any suggestions?

It's a sinkhole once you go >$600 since you need the Amps and Source to match the headphones.

Listening to HD800s with anything shit is not worth the purchase.

        • +3

Other than the amazing HD800s, Senn make boring sounding headphones that the internet is weirdly obsessed with. Unless you feel like your AKGs are too bright or something, I can't imagine what benefit you would see going for the mid-fi Senns.

If you like the AKG sound, there is always the Hifiman HE400s/400i which do everything you like a little/lot better.

If you want open and resolving with a big soundstage, Beyer T1 gen1s can be had for $650-750 used, or t90s for a couple hundred less.

Chances are, your source is fine. Outside of headfi circlejerks, DACs make very little audible difference. A basic USB combo dac/amp (like the GeekOut) or a small desktop stack (Schiit Modi/Vali, ODAC/O2) is more than enough for 99% of people. If you are only using it with a desktop PC, a used Xonar Essence costs almost nothing.

If you really think you have an amp problem, spend the money on a decent headphone amp. Depending on what you listen to, something with a strong top end like the 7XX sounds great with a tube amp. Used Bottlehead Cracks float around for less than you would spend on these. Or a pretty Woo Audio 3/6 for a lot more money.

        • @jjcf: This is good advice. I recently stepped up from the AKG k702s to Audio Technica's top of the line ATH w5000, and the improvement is significant. It's also true that amplification is a good investment: my k702s improved enormously when I paired them with an old Burson HA 160 (which I got for $350 or so).

      • The HD600s have a different sound signature but are roughly equivalent in performance to the K701s. It would be more of a side-grade.

    • What people replying don't realise is that they're tempting because I have an addiction problem with too many headphones as it is and just mentioned the headphones I have that are closest to the HD6xx :P

    • how's your AKG K7xx? it's still available for same price, US$25 shipping

  • Thanks OP! Gonna buy this and will wait for an eBay free listing promo to sell my current headphones :)

    • What are they?

      • AKG K7xx, from massdrop as well. Similar to the AKG K701, but massdrop exclusive.

  • Yeah I saw this on massdrop. Thought I might post it when it it becomes active.

They do say the products would be sent out at mid December. Not sure whether massdrop will use ship forwarding service for this, as they tend to do that with massdrop edition headphones. If they send it via ups instead, I reckon people might be better off using private shipforwarder instead since their usual postal service is awful.

    • Using a ship forwarder will be a bit more expensive. Shopmate for example would be work out to cost around $10 - $20 more.

      • You'd probably get it earlier and with less hassle. I've heard horror stories and frankly I rate their postal service below Chinese vensors.

        • I've ordered 3 things from massdrop now, never had a problem. Agreed that you'll have a bit more security using a forwarder.

        • @nereus: I rate their parcel service far below because they take far longer. Since the experience I had with them were with UPS service, if they send the product using a different method, it really woudln't matter.

It took UPS like 2 months after the deal was finished. Box looked scuffed. Stuff I buy from China usually come within 2 to 4 weeks time. So that's why I don't like UPS service that Massdrop uses for international shipping that much.

As I said, if Massdrop shipforward it instead (Massdrop usually don't send Massdrop edition headphones overseas directly due to contracts, I assume that'd be different from the UPS service), it'd be different.

massdrop is a waste of time, you'll save 60 bucks and wait 8 weeks and then they will come damaged and youll hate them.

just buy locally for $369, and you wont have the tight ass HD6XX look and youll get them ALOT faster
    http://www.noisymotel.com/product.asp?ProductID=732&gclid=Cj…

    i dont see the deal….

    • The HD6XXs are based off the HD650s so it' actually bit more than the HD600s that you listed.

You save just over $100 with the Massdrop ones compared to local stock - just gotta have to play the waiting game though (only downside).

      • -1

ohh my bad, still saving $100 for a 8 week wait, no thanks, plus pain in ass warranty.

        • +1

2y (International)warranty and Sennheiser AU is near Sydney ;)

        • @jutsu:

But these aren't normal Sennheiser… How you can be sure international warranty applies?

        • @AlexF:
Because there is a "Sennheiser 2-year warranty" and it's manifactured by Sennheiser in Ireland.
          https://en-au.sennheiser.com/service-support-services-warran…

edit: but a few years ago, Massdrop was in charge of the broken headphones…

        • @jutsu: It might take bit of time since these are not normal HD650. They probably wouldn't have the parts specifically for the headphone (that said, since most of the parts look interchangable with HD600/650, they might use parts from those instead).

        • @Oversimplified:
Ah yes, maybe Sennheiser used a lower quality material for the headband or simplified the process to assemble the pieces to justify the price change ? (it's just a hypothesis)

Sometimes, famous french or US clothing brands sell 2 different version of the same model: 1 at full price in-store and another one for their own outlet stores or for a famous online reseller but the quality isn't the same (thinner, a cheaper type of stitch, less decorative buttons, etc.) the aim is to sell it cheaper.

        • @jutsu: I frankly think the parts are reasonably cheap as is (A lot of the parts are plastic, which makes it fairly light, talking as a HD600 owner). Eh, they are two different completely models, one stemming from HD650. It's really rare for a company to stock a part for a product that they don't sell in the country.

That said, HD600 is easy to pull apart (I have to re-watch how to replace the driver, but I don't think it was that difficult). Besides, it's most likely going to be the cable that breaks first, which is replacable by default. Everything else (which I do think would be compatiable with HD600/650 parts, just from the looks), doesn't look that hard too replace if you ask me.

  • The deal is ok but Massdrop logo on the headphone, really? Not for my taste.

    • +2

It's on the inside? You can barely see it

    • Should be removable with a lil nail polish remover perhaps?

  • yeah I wonder how long you will have to wait.

I just got my HIFIMAN350 that was ordered in MAY 2016.

    • It should definitely be a lot shorter than the HE 350 wait. Hifiman at the time had not properly organized the production process due to supply companies. Sennheiser is a lot more prestigious and renowned and should be on top of the production.

    • I waited three weeks for my CODE keyboard. Stories like yours make me worried about reordering.

    • order in MAY 2016

      Crikey.

  • what's this like compared to the fidelio x2?

    • People are saying that it's around the same (personal preference) - X2 is more bassy. But the price is more than the HD6XX.

    • I could write an explanation as to why. But these are considered better than the X2's. Watch or read their reviews from those who know what they're talking about. This is not to put the X2's down, they are one of my favourite headphones. But the HD650 (or HD6xx in this case, if they are indeed what they promise to be) with a proper amp/dac are definitely the "higher-end" of the two.

Best thing you can do, is drop into a local headphone store if there is one in your area and test both for 10 to 15 minutes with different type of music. Every ear is different, you might like the X2's better, but you just can't go wrong with the Sennheiser HD650 (which this promises to be).

  • Sold out in a little over two hours. Massdrop was plagued with server issues and failed to register the thousands of requests to join the drop. Many including myself spent the whole two hours trying and failing to get a spot. Complete waste of time.

    • Yep I tried for half an hour before giving up… Not unexpected though - the demand for these were huge. Reminds me of the old catch of the day times when they actually had good deals and bad servers

      • +1

Massdrop is cancelling duplicate orders to free up additional units, and are assigning them to people who "joined the drop" in order based on its server's timestamp. Check your e-mail or "Massdrop Transaction" to see if you receive an invitation. You will have to be quick to act because the invitation closes 11 November 23:59 US Pacific Time.

        • Yeah I've been following the 7,000 post long discussion on Massdrop a fair bit because work is boring… I was lucky enough to get a pair after they redistributed the double ups, should make for a good New Years present
