Brunswick Wild Sardines $0.84 was $1.68 (50% off) @ Woolworths

90

Just popped down to my local Woolworths and saw this bargain.

Haven't had sardines in about a decade but at this price I'm going to give it a go.

Two flavours, olive oil or spring water.

    Brunswick Wild Sardines

Where in Brunswick do they catch them?

    • +2

      Somewhere in Canada

Must be a very loooooong fishing line…

        • They use a net jules

    • Be easier to catch the tame ones you'd think.

    • Brunswick was my favourite for Sardines & Kippers.
These days concerns about the radiation effects from the Continuing Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster upon the environment has radically changed my eating habits.

Is it time for Radioactive Safe Food labeling?

  • forget it they are terrible.

    • In my opinion they are the best sardines in a can available,

The pure olive oil ones are spectacular, very few fish products are canned in pure olive oil now, too "expensive". Even Sirena tuna does not use much if any olive oil, it is mostly sunflower and they say it is Italian style. Italians do not eat sunflower oil.

    • I wouldn't say they are terrible. But in saying that, I have ones which just say "in olive oil". Don't know if it means pure… I usually eat them if there's no other fish around (don't mean 2 legged). That should tell you how good they are. To me Safcol and King Oscar especially is much better. But I guess tastes are different.

Pretty sure this is nationwide. Same price here in WA, it's also in the catalogue.

  • King Oscar seems to be the only brand of sardines that is consistently delicious. The Brunswick ones are really, really… big.

Does anyone know any sardine brands that are easily available in Australia, don't cost a lot and are actually good quality fish?

    • Brunswick :)

      • I think you missed this bit:

        are actually good quality fish?

I guess there aren't. King Oscar and his exorbitant prices are it, are they?

        • Go read the Brunswick web site, the sardines are wild caught in Canada from a clean area. The fish in the can seem great. The oil added is healthy. They are very high in Omega 3.

Yes maybe they are larger than many but why is that a bad thing if they taste OK?

King Oscar more than twice the price. They are caught in the waters off Norway, why are they cleaner than Canada? I would guess they are not.

The other difference is King Oscar are brisling sardines while Brunswick are juvenile North Atlantic herring.

          I like them.

        • I buy kings when on special :)

    • King Oscar seems to be the only brand of sardines that is consistently delicious

      you are correct sir

      • dammit.

I once found a site on the net that rated all the brands of sardines available - it was a huge table, but none of the top brands they mentioned I could find here.

        It's a real shame.

Waiting for King Oscar to go on special is a nightmare.
