Google Home $189 Plus $9 Delivery @ Kogan

90

I was left completely broken-hearted after missing the 20% off google home special. After researching Google Home for the past week I almost pulled the trigger on one of the overpriced units on eBay. I checked Ebay US and after factoring in shipping and currency conversion it was over AU$200 so this price from Kogan seems pretty good. They also offer a local form of warranty which is better than nothing.

Anyway I'm keen to get playing with one of these.

Hope it helps someone else too.

On a side note, if you have a google apps/G Suite email address through google they don't currently support google home or google assistant. Lots of people complaining online and no current workarounds, which is a bit of a bummer, since it's essentially paid gmail.

Shipping problems with the previous deal - I doubt these will be sent for a few weeks yet (mine is slated to leave the warehouse on the 13th of April).

    • I believe there were probably two batches since they went "out of stock" before putting it back in. I got mine in the first batch and arrived this morning. The second batch was probably "on order" to be delivered to DSE / Kogan before they can forward it on.

    • Same here. I'm not pressed - getting it cheap next month is fine with me. However, the OP might want to note that this may take a bit to get to people who order.

  • Have one on order from the 20% off deal. Got an email from kogan a few days ago advising stock won't be available and shipping until 15th April.

Mine shipped from Hong Kong a few days after I ordered. From memory the delivery date when I ordered was around the 10th of April.

  • It will be interesting to see if these ship quicker than the previous deal.

  • On a side note, if you have a google apps/G Suite email address through google they don't currently support google home or google assistant.

BS. I use mine fine with my Google Apps account.

    • Do you have your own domain as opposed to @gmail? I contacted support and they confirmed they can't access private data such as appointments/calendar, google photos, flights, etc if you have your own domain hosted via google apps/g suite. It's pretty well covered online. Would love to be proven wrong.

On an iphone, allo has google assistant which is essentially the Brian's of google home. You can test it there.

Yes, own domain. Not everything works but shopping lists, Google music etc all works. There are changes coming to allow multi user so I wouldn't be surprised if the ability to access the calendar etc occur at that stage.

        • Ah ok cool. I should have explained myself. I use calendar for all my appointments so seeing what I have on that day is a big deal for me. Thanks for clarifying.

        • There's usually a difference in products between Legacy Gapps and new paid Gapps accounts. I haven't checked this for Google Home though.

        • @zuccs: ah ok. Mine is legacy. I don't actually pay anything aside from domain renewal.

  • who has one and out of 10 how much easier does it make your life?

also, does the home automation work well ?

Amazon Alexa is still better for home automation in my opinion. I have both setup and the Google Home needed a bit more fiddling to get it working (I have a Pi hosting a MQTT server and emulating a Hue bridge which controls Sonoff switches with custom firmware and other devices such as my Denon AVR).

Where the Google Home shines is when you use it for Googling. If you asked Alexa "Whats the weather going to be like tomorrow?".. .or "What are Bunnings open hours?".. you'd get nothing as appose to Google Home which obviously gives you results from Google (as if you were searching in a browser).

Saying "Ok Google" doesn't roll as well as "Alexa" though.. and more often than not I ask Google Home to turn the lights on.. but it fails so I end up asking Alexa instead (much better at processing home automation commands).

I'm happy but both have their pros and cons.

      • How does echo go for calendar integration? Like 'what do I have on tomorrow' etc

"Hey Google" works as well (at least on my Android smartphone).

      • How do you find voice recognition comparing the two? I have an Echo Dot and TBH I'm pretty disappointed at the error rate.

A mate of mine has several Echo's and has for some time - he commented that he thought the error rates for the Echos were getting worse over time, not better

        Cheers

        • Google Home has more "error rates" when trying to call home automation functions. They're not really errors, they're usually from other sounds interrupting like my ceiling speakers (directly above)… or if I say the command before the device is ready to listen (happens for both Alexa and Google Home). I haven't noticed my Alexa device getting worse over time though.

  • I just received mine this morning from the last DSE sale! Its pretty funky. Sound quality is pretty good too coming out of Pandora. It is a bit limited though and should hopefully get better with time. Basically what the Audio Chrome Cast should have been right at the beginning IMO.

$189 + $9 delivery (delivery charge may vary)

    • Kogan is Dick smith

      • $189 is $9 cheaper than $198.

Edit: nvm, now you have a price change.

        • They're both $189. Sorry it was a typo.

B&H had a slightly better deal I think - an extra $10 for a Chromecast 2 or Audio.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/295389

    But still this is decent.

Probably need to hook it up to the likes of a Logitech Harmony before people will really get a lot of use out of this (my harmony should be delivered in the next day or two!).

    • I read that a chromecast using CEC should be able to control my Samsung ks8000 by automatically switching to the chromecast hdmi and running the request (Netflix, google photos, etc)

Can't wait for Plex integration like they've done with the amazon echo

    • I tried the link in that deal and can't see the bundled chromecast?

      • Yeah looks like it was a limited time offer as it doesn't appear to be on it anymore unfortunately. :(
I got it when it was available and got the CC2 over the CC Audio.

If you've already got a CC, it's not really that big of a difference, especially when you will probably get a slightly less painful warranty experience with 'local' Kogan over B&H in the US.

I was just talking to a friend about this and he was telling me his Samsung TV auto-switches to the CC whenever he casts to it - I looked it up and yeah, it looks like it's HDMI-CEC that does it and yeah, I think it'll do the same for you.
        Very handy!

        • oh cool. thanks for the heads up. I read that some TVs don't poewer the CC via USB when they are switched off from remote. so if u ask GH to show a movie on netflix it can't because it's not actually powered on.

        • @Bellpop: Ahh, I didn't realise that!
Both my TV's are LG and both keep the CC powered up - I'll need to test out this CEC thing for myself and see if it'll switch inputs for me without doing anything!

        • @Bellpop:

Wouldn't you need to have the TV turned on before you could actually watch the movie though?
