  • Hmm…. Should i buy this or wait for Bixby 🤔

But google already knows everything about me, I don't want to train another assistant!

  • Does anyone have a view as to how this will go compared to Australian release. Would it be fair to assume that once it comes out in Australia it'll work basically the same in terms of functionality (I.e. just power cables and warranty will be different?)

I'm worried that they'll bring out some feature that only works on Australian models.

    • Oh yes, got to keep an eye out for those Metric microphones….
Im kidding, of course it will be the same.

Drop bear detection would be a handy Aussie feature!

We use decibels, they use deciwhistles?

I just don't wanna find out that it'd come out with menulog integration but only for aussie bought ones or something… thanks ;)

Way I'd look at it is we know that Amazon in launching in Oz this year, and the Echo Dot is ~$50-80. That will link through to buying Amazon stuff, using Amazon services, etc.

Unless Google get a move on and formally launch in Australia, they are going to be in pain.

  • +1

My view is that the only difference is existence, otherwise all the features are the same.

It sounds like it's not very mature yet and trails Echo. Give it a year or two and the service will not only be better but you'll get a newer model.

    "Google Chromecast Audio 2nd Generation"?

  • I find because the smarts in this are all cloud based I suspect that until there are newer wi-fi standards the hardware will remain pretty much the same. I find mine gets new functionality all the time but that is at the backend which doesn’t affect the hardware front end which is only a wi-fi microphone array of microphones for noise cancellation. I think it has already surpassed my Amazon Alexa with more natural language, but having local support for the AEST time zone and location help with that.

  • Just in case anyone is interested. Google Express (like amazon, and only in the USA) has 40% OFF your first order. If you're in the states, or have a mate willing to post out to you then you can use this https://slickdeals.net/f/9694352-new-google-express-customer…

I bought a Google Home last month and it has saved me soooo much time. I cannot yet afford wifi enabled lightbulbs, but i find the best feature is setting my alarm for the next morning, and also listening to the news in the morning "ok google, good morning!"

Umm if these are the best features then it sounds like a piece of crap……

Plz explain your further time savings..

Haha … i know they seem bad, but i like them. You know how sometimes you lie in bed and really want the light/music off but dont want to move at all … this helps.

        I also use it to
        - cast videos to my tv and pc monitor via chromecast.

        • Playing music as it is linked to Google Music (i think of it as a more advanced bluetooth speaker)

        • Checking shop opening/closing times (very handy in QLD where everything closes early)

        • adding items to shopping list (ive never used a shopping list before this)

        • listening to podcasts (much easier then searching on your phone)

        • hopefully checking football scores when the AFL season starts

        • checking my timetable for the day ahead

        • reminding me where i have placed things.

        • ive also used a few of the games such as a group trivia game

The things that it cannot do yet, but they are 'coming soon':
        - skyping people
        - adding events to the calendar

IMO some disabled people will love the independence that a Google Home provides them. I am not disabled but I can imagine the benefits.

We have had a google home for about a month.
    It's used…..a lot.
    Upsides,
Controls all our Chromecasts, yeelights via ifttt and now feels like a pain to get you phone out for anything.
You just walk past and tell it to play music for say gym or alfresco and boom. We have Chromecast audio zones throughout our property so that works great.

    Downsides,
Hijacked by kids for spelling and wife for timer because it's too close to the kitchen.

Overall it's awesome when you get used to it. ( say play on all speakers for example works better than saying, to all

    • +1

What speakers are you using for this to work?

  • +3

Yeah, I'm not going to give the world's largest internet advertising business acccess to my home network in order to to serve advertising that fools believe doesn't affect them.

Watch out for those Major League Baseball satellites!!….

  • Google Humidifier 1.0.

What's the difference between Google home and having your phone next to you with Google speak (or whatever it's called) turned on ?

  • Thanks OP - been thinking about getting one of these to play with, plus could do with another audio, so done.

  • I have one of these and got it integrated with my power points, air conditioning, and smoke detectors.

    Quite neat.
I can say hey google im cold and my heating will start for example

  • Still trying to figure out if i can get my cbus to work with it. Much trickier because their API doesn't really work that way.

  • After the initial novelty of the home assistance agents on various platform, I dont really see the value in these things. Maybe if I had a phone with half a dozen smart devices running IFTT alongside this then it can be somewhat worth it. What would it be the used cash this vs the phone apart from the convenience factor?

    Lol

So this is basically an internet connected smart device that listens 24/7 and sends all data to a remote server? Sounds like something from an 80's dystopia film.

  • Still undecided whether to give Alexa or Google a crack in my home.

  • When is the Google Work device coming out? I could use something that could do my mundane tasks for me.
