  • what sort of preparation should be done before sowing the new grass seeds?

also I get a fair bit of shade from trees on the west side boundary (from around noon the shade starts on my lawn). I'm in Nth Bris, so what sort of seed would be best to over sow the current grass, which is struggling? (it's difficult to prune the branches as they are quite high up)

    • We have a full preparation guide you can download from our site, but basically lay 1-2 inches of topsoil, spread the seed, rake lightly into the soil, and then keep the soil damp until the seed germinates.

If you have remnants of an existing lawn, you may want to kill it off first.

    • The more shade tolerant varieties are things like RTF Tall Fescue, and Kentucky Blue.

  • Read this as GRASS FED SEEDS was confused for a sec?

  • I have about half an acre of land at the back of my block on a decent slope, it was covered in blackberries and weeds which I recently slashed and poisoned. When that's done it's work I want to plant some kind of grass that doesn't grow very high, like less than 15cm because it's a pain to mow/cut there. Does such a thing exist? It's in full sun, west facing. Thanks.

I'll his be chucking it around and hopefully it grows, decent amount of soil and naturally decayed matter, high rainfall area, Adelaide Hills

    • I would suggest a Bermuda Couch.

Grows laterally via runners rather than vertically.

Loves the sun, and should be able to handle the extreme heat of the Adelaide hills.

If you can rake the seed lightly into the soil and water it for 2-3x weeks it'll have the best chance of establishing.

  • If I was to get some white clover seeds, cut my lawn real short and sprinkle the seeds over the top would I have much success? Or do I have to rip it all up and replace it with clover?

    • You won't need to rip up the existing lawn.
Oversow the clover seed mixed with good quality soil topdressing, and water regularly as you would a new lawn.

  • I laid Palmetto Buffalo few years ago in my backyard of around 65sqm, most of it is dried up with some weeds commingup and want repair it. Which seed would you recommend ? I don't want grass that creeps. What prep would you advise ? I m in Melbourne south west.

    • If you want to stick with the Palmetto, a temporary fix would be to use annual ryegrass to fill the gaps. This would die off after about a year, giving the Palmetto time to recover. There isnt really a similar enough variety that would blend in with the broad leaf Palmetto.

If you would like to start with something new, or are not concerned about a uniform look, at this time of year in Melbourne, I would recommend something like our Elite Backyard Blend or an RTF Tall Fescue. Excellent year round coverage and should germinate quite quickly. (Both of these suggestions creep but MUCH slower than Palmetto/Couch/Kikuyu)

      • Thanks for the advise. Would MCKAYS BUFFALO LAWN SEED BLEND be closer to Palmetto ?

  • Our buffalo has a much finer blade than the Palmetto. I also wouldnt recommended sowing it at this time of year in Melbourne. It will get too cold before it has a chance to really establish.

  • In Hobart Tasmania, what would be the suitable grass? I am wondering if the RTF Fescue will run off and agressive? Do you have anymore discount code? thanks
