  • is this laptop ok to use for 4k video editing?

    • Well, I'd assume since you're asking about it, that it isn't going to involve a lot of professional work, just some casual editing. I'd say it is ok, but that is it. Specs are good but you are paying premium for the build quality as well.
If you can afford to not be mobile, you can spend around the same price on a desktop (used ones on gumtree are actually a good purchase if you know how to look for it) and a decent laptop for light video editing.

It might be a bit much to say that these things are top notch and superb build quality given the amount of people who have posted a range of issues with this model. See reddit and other sites for details.

The issues experienced seem generally to reflect poorly upon the drivers for these products. My Latitude E7470 likewise has similar such issues.

Dell's quality control leaves a little to be desired.

    • Oh really! That's good to know mate. Reviews appeared pretty positive from the Dell product page with average ratings of 4 out of 5 from 2177 reviews.

Always be wary of 'reviews' on a company's own website.

Wow you mean they just didn't leave any negative reviews on a website they control? AMAZEBALLS!

    $3k laptop with gtx1050

yea… I understand that a laptop will always have issues doing ultra gaming… but given that even a 1070 would struggle with 4K, why would Dell match a 4K screen with a 1050?

      • +2

Obviously, XPS isn't a gaming laptop - Alienware is. 4K is for text rendering quality - at 200% scaling, rendering quality is twice as good compared to FHD at same screen size. 1050 is just bragging rights - IGP is sufficient for non-gaming.

A machine like this is built for on the go CPU intensive apps, not really gaming. Look at the 32gb ram. Maybe for a professional, I reckon itd be a good portable simulation machine. The graphics card might help with some rendering but not ideal.

        • @ATangk:

A machine like this is built for on the go CPU intensive apps, …

HQ processors are mobile workstation calibre, but only if the rest of the system allows for ample heat dissipation. XPS laptops are thin, so their side-exhaust fans are relatively short, meaning that these processors are going to be throttling very often. Quick bursts, yes, but not (continuously) intensive processing.

          Look at the 32gb ram.

          for memory-intensive applications.

XPS are all-rounder consumer laptops with premium feel and sufficient bragging rights to take on MacBook Pro.

XPS is plagued with issues, i'd avoid it until they get their quality control sorted out. Yoga 720 looking like a good alternative..

  • I got one of these for work during the tech20 sale. works well only issue is the windows touch screen driver doesn't work after resuming from sleep, but thats of no loss what so ever. It works perfectly under linux, have to do some manual install of drivers but all good. The wireless card is worth replacing with a decent intel one instead of the killer wifi crap it comes with.

To the suggestion of the Yoga 720, we have several of those at work, not worth the money, absolute junk and you can't put 32gb of ram in them so why even bother?

    • Yoga 720 not even released yet, and has exact same spec as XPS. Very few people need 32gb RAM.

      • must be an earlier model we've got at work then, they have yoga 720 written on em, don't deal with them myself just overhear the bitching from the guy that has to support the users with em.

  • I wonder if it will be this price the next time they have a 20% code for ebay?

    • flight to US to collect makes it a bit expensive tho

  • I actually am typing on the xps 15 7th gen i7, 16gb ram, 512 ssd, 4gb gpu 4k model.

I love it, but even with two tabs and word open, it lags and often crashes. my dinosaur was about to handle chrome with infinate tabs and although that crashed too, it had 4gb of ram. :(

I love it, but it does have issues. I have to email Dell

At $3k I'd personally buy a 15" MacBook pro (can't believe I'd say this, as I'm a Windows user), but the resale value of this thing will be just over $1k at best after 2 years and the MacBook will probably still be over $2k…

  • Why can't anyone make a thin i7 15inch laptop for less than 1.5k..

    Everyone's just making 13inch laptops

No comparison to a MacBook Pro on speed, video editing & resale value.

    • re resale, you're 100% correct.

Speed, not really. This model literally has the latest specs of any notebook.

Video editing, again, not really. If you're a FC user then yeah, of course. If you use premiere/sony then this'll be just as good or better.

      • -2

        1) Specs are irrelevant, independent testing is
        2) YouTube video shows Adobe Premiere on Windows is way slower than Final Cut Pro on MacOS

        • -1

I've seen head to head videos showing the exact opposite. This laptop smokes the MBP 2016 with touch bar.

        • @DoctorOwl: only Adobe premiere, not when Final Cut Pro is compared

  • For 3k, I wonder if buying lower spec laptop, tablet and ps4/xbox would be cheaper but would still fulfill all functions like gaming, portability, editing and screen experience this laptop does?

  • How could I upgrade the warranty? If I am going to buy this laptop, I want to use at least 3 years.

    • you buy it, and then call dell within a certain timeframe (i think 30 or 90 days) and they will add it. call them to be sure to be sure.
