Mwave Seagate Barracuda 2TB $139.00 1.5 TB $108

100

Got a email from mwave for barracuda 2TB drive with sata II , I guess you will have to buy a enclosure but you could also use it internally. Note it is 5900rpm so a bit slow.
The Barracuda LP drives deliver on low power consumption. But low power no longer means slow power. Benchmark performance results prove the 5900-RPM spin speed advantages (when compared to competitor drives that spin at 5400 RPMs). And these drives are cool and easy on the PC, often requiring fewer fans, a smaller power supply and lower maintenance costs. It’s the definition of energy efficiency.
Best For
USB, eSATA and FireWire personal attached storage devices, home and small office networking appliances, low power PCs and for customers who value low power, green drives

Barracuda LP drives are available in capacities of 2 TB, 1.5 TB and 1 TB and are ideal for desktop applications.

  • Cheapest yet?

  • nice cheap prices and i like mwave they have great service.. allot of other stores can learn a thing or two from them!

Especially after Mwave were found Guilty of breaches of the Trades Practice Act and told to change their dodgy practices by the ACCC!! 0.o

      • Yes, this makes me wary as well. Both of being burnt, and of supporting what may be an unethical company.

Then again, if they've genuinely improved — any experiences anyone?

        Background:

        • I bought a 500gb 2.5' seagate from them a few months ago. Got the HDD within 2 business days. No complaints.

  • $16.53 shipping to 3000

  • +1

Very mixed reviews; largely positive, yet, with a significant number of dissenters rating it at one-star and complaining of noise, DOA and failures.

    • Amazon 67 reviews: 42 @ 4- or 5-stars, 15 @ 1-star
    • Amazon UK 10 reviews, all @ 4- or 5-stars.
    • NewEgg 276 reviews: 55% @ 4- or 5-stars and 30% @ 1-star.
    • See also a compilation of reviews at Retrevo.

How are people finding Mwave's reliability and integrity these days?

This drive probably don't have the dodgy firmware. But I have a 1TB that is affected by the firmware issues and it's pretty much the most expensive paperweight I have. It is a replacement drive for one that failed due to firmware. Seagate sent me another one with a different but still affected firmware (ie. not SD1A). Seagate refuses to acknowledge this despite other people online having experienced failures with the exact same drive and firmware.

I am so afraid to put anything remotely valuable on it that it has been powered up only half a dozen times in the past year. It was by no means cheap either, I paid $370 at the time and now it just sits there ticking away like a bomb.

After this dreadful experience I would not recommend Seagate to anyone.

      • Yeah, updating firmware before use is imperative for everything these days. If anyone does go for the drive, here is the update link. (Courtesy of "N/A" from the NewEgg reviews.)

        • you wouldnt happen to know where i can get firmware for the 1.5tb samsung hd154ui would you ?

now thats some click of death hdd it works but is bloody annoying with random freezes

        • Ah yes, I forgot to mention that my drive is an external Freeagent Pro (the one with USB, firewire and esata which was the reason for its premium price).

Thus I am unable to perform a firmware upgrade over those 3 interface. Taking the drive out of its case to perform the upgrade will void my warranty so I have not done so (I might do it after the 5 years is up).

I can't click on the + sign for this comment enough! Mine were 2x 1tb drives, both failed within days of each other despite Seagate's test util reporting they were both fine, no fw update required!!!

As you rightly point out, it is Seagate's attitude to the whole debacle that sticks in everyone's craw over this. What I find most appalling is that they're still selling drives (1, 1.5, & 2tb ext) that apparently suffer the same "Click of Death"!!!

I too, wouldn't trust them til they get some clear miles under their belt again! ;)

        • +2

and samsung + for usage of the craw

        • Ah yes, my first drive passed Seagate's tests before it failed too.

Seagate's attitude really was appalling. They refuse to acknowledge the issue even now. On the page they advise people to upgrade the firmware of their drive(s) it makes no mention of the failures imminent if the upgrade is not performed. The initial "new" firmwares released in the 2-3 months to fix the problems had their own issues, some being as damaging as the original bugged version it was meant to replace.

There was no apology, official or not, to the countless number of people affected. No recall of the affected products was performed so more and more people were affected over time, not less. I can go on and on to talk about things like how the brainless monkeys at Seagate support who give you generic responses when you try and resolve this issue or the number of threads closed or removed on their official forums regarding these issues but then I’d be here all day.

To me, it is obvious Seagate does not care about their customers.

You should understand generally people do not post if it is good service etc.. (unless they are extremely happy about it) people will put down reviews if its sucks ass or it is really really good service.
i mean.. when you order something off a site do you review the site everytime? If it has bad service you usually will review it then because its so unpleasant.

Not a bad price, you can get a 2tb Samsung for $149 from PCCG or a WD 2tb for $141 from MSY, seagate just scare me.

  • Only thing I have against these drives is that although they are the fastest low rpm 2TB drives on the market, the expected liftime on these things are considerably lower than the others. The technology used to park the head or somthing is where it falls. There was a review in a PC mag a few months back on this, forgot what mag it was but if you google it, I'm sure it will turn up somewhere.

    • nice, had to wait a few months for this price to drop, i bought one when they last dropped it to this price, and to pickup is even sweeter.

just recently bought another one for $149, so this is a god send.

      mwave you done it again.
