        • @ejayt: Thank you so much. I did see that video, but I was not too certain on whether it's a reliable or not. :)

Hope your modification goes well. :)

        • @ejayt: Keep us posted! The colours are very washed out but its not too bad for text editing and uni work. Good luck :)
EDIT: Also, from what I've heard there is a good chance of damaging the bezel

        • @ElmoLikesWasabi: yeh it's horrible. If it doesn't work, it looks like I might have to get rid of it unfortunately, and then back to my t420 again for a while (which actually has a higher res screen … )

Received the display this afternoon and installed it. The difference is incredible! 1080p!!!

          A couple of things though:

          1. Thinkpads aren't made the same way as they used to be. There is some strong double sided tape inbetween the display and the LCD bezel. It's not a matter of just unclipping the plastic hinges to take it off anymore - it's that, plus working through all the tape and trying not to damage things at the same time. I think I might have broken 2 clips on the side, and the bezel might be a bit bent (I'm yet to put it back on). Luckily it's cheap to get another one on ebay.

          2. The screen is flashing vertical white lines. It's not very frequent, it might happen once every 10 minutes quickly. It looks like something I could get used to, but it's annoying nonetheless. I've read up on what it may be and it could be the cable connection to the display. I've tried reseating it three times or so, and have had different types of lines come up. I'm a bit tired now and might just put it back together and see how it goes in the long run before fiddling again.

It's just amazing how different the laptop has become because of it. This screen is the LG version, which may be the one in the T460p. It's not the most perfect monitor, but it's the best I've seen on one of my own laptops for a long time. The backlight shadows at the bottom, at certain angles, is visible, but not a problem. The screen is much brighter and the viewing angles better too, including the fact that colours don't fade away like they did on the old display.

          Hope this helps

        • @ejayt: Awesome to hear everything went well. Please let us know if you find a fix for the white lines :)

        • +1

@ElmoLikesWasabi: I have a feeling it could be a faulty panel. I'm discussing a replacement with the ebay vendor right now as they've agreed to replace it. I'll keep you updated

        • +1

@ElmoLikesWasabi: Got the replacement screen, everything looks fine. The line wasn't apparent as much later in the week in the old panel, maybe it just was stuck and needed some activity…. Anyway, that screen with the line still beats the old panel, could let it go for a small fee, otherwise I'll mod it into another screen for my desktop or something ;)

BTW anyone found deals on ram? Looking at a 1x 16gb or a really good deal on 2x16gb

        • @ejayt: Went ahead and bought the screen. I will be also be on the lookout for some ram. Everything is so expensive in Australia ):

        • @ElmoLikesWasabi: Awesome! I have no problems with the screen now since my last post, so it was a defective screen, the replacement works fine, and not any problem with the laptop. You won't need a new cable.

I wanted to beef up my ram with a 16gb but it's insane how expensive they are so I went with another 8gb. The ram chip inside mine was the Lenovo FRU 03X6657 which I found was equivalent to the Crucial CT102464BF160B in timing (CL11), and in voltage (1.35v).

Good luck with the screen, maybe spend some time before you get it trying to pry the glue off the current one without twisting/bending the cover. Then try to remove all the double sided tape before sticking it back on. As long as your clipsdidn't break it should go back on fine.

There were some screws near each corner (but closer inward horizontally) which look like they were screwing the front plastic also into the back bezel. I think during manufacturing they attach the front plastic as two parts. I think you'll notice when you start to pull it apart. I just pulled mine so the screw hole stretched and popped off. I didn't really know of a better way of doing it. It sure was a bit different to pulling apart the t420's screen

        • @ejayt: The clips and screws are on the inner bezel correct? So I can pry off the bezel sheet/sticker without worrying about breaking? Did you remove the screen off the hinges and all? Last time I removed the base cover was less than fun… I hope I get the LG screen. Thanks for all your responses, I really appreciate it :)

        • @ElmoLikesWasabi: It's hard to explain. What do you mean by inner bezel? I'm bad with this terminology, sorry ;)

So the screen to me, has two pieces. You can see on the side that there's the seam. So when you pry both apart from each other, they have clips that attach the front to the back. Let's call the front piece the one you see when you're looking at the screen.

So this front piece has all these clips around the edges. It's also double sided taped onto the LCD screen for some reason which makes things difficult because you need to somehow get this front piece off from the strong sticky tape, and unclipped at the same time without stretching the "front piece", because it will stretch/twist and not be exactly the same shape when you put it back. I guess how much you actually care about that will determine how careful you are.

ON TOP OF THAT —-!! This is what I found puzzling. Was that this front piece is actually screwed in to the same screws that holds the display in place. I don't know how it was done. But when you're manipulating the plastic sheet from the tape and clips, you'll come across the screws also, for example the one on the bottom left is just above the left hinge and about a thumb distance to the right. It should be in the same symmetical pattern for the top ones and the right. I couldn't get these off without stretching the plastic forward and unscrewing them somehow awkwardly. I got one off by doing that, but the other three I just pulled until the plastic popped off. I can't really notice it at all, but it's subjective to how much you want to care about this ;) I just wanted a better screen. If you break it completely, you can get another bezel front piece for $15 off of ebay I think.

Last thing to note, is the bottom part of the display has a plastic covering over the electronics, it makes things tricky to identify if you think you're pulling the double sided tape off, but really you're pulling this off of the display instead. Which probably won't make much difference if you're not interested in using the screen again.

Lastly, we should be able to find controlle rboards for these displays on ebay. I might stick it mine to my wall and use it as a third monitor on my desktop or something.. not sure

        • @ejayt: Cheers, I'll let you know how I go :) I've already been picking away at the bezel sheet(front piece)…quite literally with a guitar pick hahaha. I'm pretty sure its already starting to warp..why did they use tape…

Hmmm the spare screen could make for an interesting project. I was thinking something along the lines of a weather/calendar or personal assistant AI project. Enable PMs if you would like to discuss this further.

        • @ElmoLikesWasabi: I thought the same thing. Keep an update on it. This is most likely the only resource on the internet for 1080p t460 upgrade that actually has any information. I had to more or less take a leap of faith that this would work when I bought the screen.

          PMs on.

        • +1

@ejayt: I've switched it in and it is beautiful :D. It was a lot easier than I thought. Now I just have to wait for my ram to arrive. Also, I've noticed bottom of my screen getting hot.

          T460 Hardware Maintenance Manual - https://ok1.de/thinkpad/HMM/t460_hmm_en_sp40k04896.pdf

          Here's what I did:
For the most part, follow this video. The only difference between the T460 and the T460s was the front bezel.
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aL7j1MfPWc

Some things different from the vid:

          1. Peel a bit slower towards the bottom as there's some isolation covering(which is part of the screen).
          2. Unscrew the 4 screws at each corner.
          3. Remove the bezel by using a spudger or guitar pick around the outside to carefully seperate the bezel from the lid. There will be clips.
          4. When putting the bezel back, put the bottom left and right corners into their clips before anything else as these have an upwards hook.

When I google replace T460 screen this doesn't come up :P If I have time I'll put it on the thinkwiki. Though I am a little worrisome about the extra heat towards the bottom of the screen.

      • I just looked up on eBay, there were a few that popped up.

Eh, I am not in a rush to get one, I might search some more.

My brief research suggests that it's doable. There were apparently issues with screen replacement in T450, with Lenovo using whitelist system apparently.

        • Also, this T460 doesn't come with an internal battery…

        • +1

@ElmoLikesWasabi: I completely haven't noticed it until you mentioned it :( Eh, it's still a bargain considering it's $600ish is what I will tell myself.

    • Got mine also.. Only HD :( I can't find enough information online to upgrade to FHD. Any luck?

  • I am so annoyed that I missed out on this deal entirely. Was so happy but I started to get a sinking feeling when I didn't get the shipping notice the next day. Still wondering if the lucky few who got the X1C have noticed anything different about it compared to the listing..

  • just collected my X1C, not sure it's new or not, as the box and the seal wrapping the laptop in the box is broken.. upon checking lenovo website, there are about 1000days left for warranty.. setup in the process now..

    • interesting, let us know if any inconsistencies. I sent you a PM as well, just wondering which number machine you were allocated based on purchase history.

      • specs looks the same to me, just the packaging is kinda open (maybe they just open to check the laptop), since the warranty started from Dec 2016.. erm, not sure why the order of purchase is important to you, guess they just select it randomly to 'cancel' your order.. sorry that you are the 'unlucky one..

    • is it a FHD screen?

  • found few X1 popping up on the gumtree asking for $1.5k, almost double of the price paid..
