Malindo Air - Direct Brisbane to Bali Return from $362.50

660

First time poster so hopefully I'm doing it right.

Malindo Air has launched direct flights to Bali from Brisbane and onto Kuala Lumpur with 30kg baggage, entertainment and food included!

I have just booked tickets to Bali directly on their website $725 for 2 people during the Easter long weekend. I've been looking for last minute flights to Bali during the Easter break, but prices are extremely high with all other carriers until I stumbled across this deal!!

It is slightly cheaper with bestjet.com at $349pp. There is no promotion link or info on their website/Facebook and there is only 1 flight per day at the moment. From the fare rules I read prior to paying there are NO BLACKOUT PERIODS!

BNE - DPS : 7:15am
DPS - BNE : 10pm

I have attempted to google the launch, but pretty much no info apart from some articles back in January regarding preparation to launch.

Plenty available, be quick and happy hunting :)

    What's the safety rating?

    • +7

I rate this airline two flappy wingarms

    • +13

Safer than getting into your own car.

      • Safer than chance being hit by cyclist who ran through the red light on pedestrian crossing.

    • Flew with Malindo Air once. Cheap and adequate leg room. Only downside was that it got delayed 3 times, total 3 hours delay =\

      • +1

Where did you get delayed, Supa?

Do you think it's possible to get delayed in Australia?I don't mind getting delayed in asia since it will be my return flight.

        • Got delayed when departing from Perth.

      • +1

Out of 4 flights I've had on Malindo, two were delayed over 1.5hr and one was re-scheduled by 3 hours(but on time).

Definitely wouldn't chance it if you need to be somewhere by a certain time.

Service was fine, the planes were mostly empty however so not sure how it would be with full planes.

It's 49% owned by the Lion Air group, which is an Indonesian airline with a pretty bad track record. This is the company who landed a brand new 737 into the water short of the Denpasar runway a few years back.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion_Air#Incidents_and_acciden…

Delays with Lion Air are a pretty standard, regular thing.
I have not flown with Malindo so I can't comment about their safety or operations, I will probably never fly with them either but that's just my personal choice.

      • And 51% owned by Malaysia who lost 2 planes in 1 year, and one of them still not been found. At least Lion Air didn't kill and lost that many people.

        • So you reckon the flight mosdef delayed then to make things even worse the plane will most likely lost afterwards?

        • @rodinthink: better late than dead.

I thought the name was Maldonado Air at first… (a terrible F1 driver who's nickname was Crashtor)

    Thanks for sharing

Awesome, was looking at booking last night but was freaking out because flights were $1000s!

    • My thoughts exactly. Couldn't justify myself spending that much on flights for a few days! Enjoy Bali :)

      • What about accomodation being available on such a busy time? Where'd you book?

        • +1

Before booking I was researching accomodation first and there were heaps of options still. Leaning towards booking Sofitel Nusa Dusa since Accor is having stay 3 nights, pay 2, but plenty of villas in Ubud are even cheaper with good reviews so I'm not sure.

        • +4

You will always find a room in Bali. Locals say that room prices will always remain low due to the overwhelming number of new hotels being built.

        • @Lwanderlust: I'm in ubud right now. Crazy busy in the centre of town during the day when people flow in for day trips. I was last here 8 years ago and the difference is phenomenal. Choice of eateries is amazing.

        • +1

@Gravy: Thanks so much! I'm looking forward to the food and hearing from someone who is there is even better! Enjoy your time :)

Inaugural flight is the 1st of April for those interested.

  • site is having a conniption at the moment

Interesting that the Indonesian government removes accreditation for the Australian airline, Tigerair from Bali, and a few weeks later, a new airline is introduced on that route

    • I remember reading an article about that, but it was because tiger didn't comply to something and so accreditation was removed. Interesting indeed

    • +1

I think they are also targeting Brisbane to KL route which is pretty much Singapore airlines monopoly route after Malaysian Airlines Departure

  • +7

Malindo is owned by Lion Air. Looking at the less an one hour layover time to Kuala Lumpur in Bali, it brings back traumatic memories for me. I flew Thai Lion Air last December from Singapore to Chiang Mai through Bangkok(One single booking from their website). My first flight was delayed from Singapore to Bangkok and I missed the connecting flight to Chiang Mai. The lady at the transit counter forced me to pay the difference for a new ticket to rebook me on a later flight. She said free rebookings does not cover bookings with under 90 mins transit time. Might be worth clarifying whether this is also Malindo Air's policy if you are flying through to Kuala Lumpur.

    • +1

I wouldn't mind getting stuck in KL. Loved that place, better than Bali.

      • In this case you would be stuck in Bali. :)

I checked the flight times, BNE-KL the layover time in Bali is 1 hour, KL-BNE is 50 mins!

        • +2

I wouldn't take that, even if the rebooking cost is free. With that sort of time, your chance of missing the connecting flight (due to the airline or even distance to walk to your next gate) then wasting your time is pretty high.

        • It's the same plane, Bali is technically a stopover on the way to KL. So need to worry about any delays/rebooking issues.

        • +1

@bangbang: Holy sh*t you are right. This makes all the difference then. Driving down to GC airport for budget flights is a bit of a pain. :)

        • +1

@geek001: the drive to GC so early is such a drainer, but the drive back is even worse!

  • +3

Malindo isnt a full service, it sits between budget and full airlines.

    • Oh sorry, I have removed full service from title.
Not sure what to call it then since they provide baggage, food and entertainment…. Weird

      • They provide luggage, and minimal refreshments as food. Additional food needs to be purchased. However, that was for a shorter 2 hour international flight I once used Malindo for - it could be different for a much longer international flight like this one.

I actually do like Malindo Air - new aircraft, great service, great prices, nice inclusions.

      • I dont think they provide IFE as seatguru says their B737-800's don't skytrax reviews say they have screens

        https://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Lion_Air/Lion_Air_Boeing_737-800.php

        • Yep, they do. Just need to bring your own earphones/headphones from what I remember.

    • +1

what is it that they don't provide? ta.

      • Lifejackets.

        • +3

Chances that you need a life jacket after a crash is very slim.

        • +2

          @ca6leguy:

          Death jacket?

        A trained pilot.

  • +2

How is the review? it's owned by lion air, which is the worst airline in Indonesia in terms of punctuality. It's notorious of being always late.

    • From info I googled online it's suppose to be taking a different approach and is managed my the Malaysian side which owns 51%, while lion air 49%.

I was been reading forums prior to booking and most ppl who have flown with them were happy, so decided to give it a go.

      • -2

yeah the Malaysian approach in which the plane will disappear and the other one shot down by Russian missile.

  • So Malindo enter Aus. Well done Brizzy.

    • +1

Pretty sure Malindo were operating to Perth prior to this route opening up

      • +1

Yep, started end of 2015 and still operating in Perth now. Info online states 49% lion air and 51% Malaysia, but apparently it's managed under Malaysian.

  • I personally had very good experience with Malindo customer support. Rescheduled my flight without paying any penalty.

  • what happens if the flights dont take off from BNE, will we get full refund of the flight costs ?? went through the terms and conditions and saw no information on it.

    • As in flight cancellation? your travel insurance should cover it, just read your coverage prior to purchasing cover.

      • +4

Nearly got in a tiff with the missues last night saying "if you can't afford travel insurance, you can't afford to travel".

What does "mal" mean in Bahasa? In English as a prefix (and word in certain set phrases) and in other languages borrowing from the Latin, it means bad.

    Bad Indo?

    • +10

      stands for Mal(aysia) + Indo(nesia)

    • Mal -> Malay -> Malaysia -> Malpractice

  • They also have flights to Kuala Lumpur as well out of Brisbane over the easter period - I had a look at 11/4 - 20/4 and total return price is $471.70

    • its the same flight which proceeds to KL after 1hr stop-over in Bali i think

  • +1

I have had multiple good experiences with Malindo. Was very surprised with the leg room, my partner is 6 ft+ and sat comfortably, and the tickets at the time were cheaper than air asia (post luggage price). Food isnt great but comfort all the way. Parents mention that the actual size of the plane is small, but its good to see airlines that dont pack everyone in like sardines for max profit..

  • +1

general review online of the airline don't look to good…

Malindo Air are owned by Lion Air, I've flown a lot in the past few years and I want to point out Lion Air are the worst airline I've ever flown with.

Lion seem to sit between Budget and Full Service, offering free baggage but no food (can't even buy on board). I've taken 4 flights with them domestically around Indonesia, should have been 3 flights. Our flight from Medan to Bandung literally landed in the wrong city, we landed in Jakarta. We weren't informed of this until landing. Were told we could leave the terminal to get food but then we weren't allowed back in. Didn't have a Jakarta boarding pass so I couldn't clear back through security. I wasn't able to get a new boarding pass as they're system doesn't allow it, none of the people on the ground knew why I was in Jakarta either (as my ticket was KNO>BDO). After about 30 minutes, one of the workers ended up writing me up a boarding pass by hand, I only knew what gate to be at as I managed to get on Wifi and one of the other people I was travelling with let me know. The staff had no idea why or how I got to Jakarta (not noticing that a plane had just landed from Medan). The weird thing is that no staff at the airport even questioned my hand written boarding pass, I showed it to at least 3 people. Eventually I managed to board a flight to Bandung, but definitely the worst airline experience I've ever had.

Another thing that was weird is that we couldn't prebook extra baggage (20kg each included). 7 of us were travelling with over 200kg, each airport staff member charged us different amounts, seemingly guessing how much to charge us, the last flight we got charged nothing.

I won't fly Lion ever again… I flew DPS > SUB > JOG > SUB > DPS with them over a period of 2 weeks back in 2015 and every flight was a disaster. Completely disorganised, constant delays, locals screaming at airport staff wanting information with none being available. One of the flights the cockpit door was flapping open the whole time and any one of the passengers could have gone up and stabbed the pilots.

They're well and truly off my list, the only domestic carriers I'll fly there now are Garuda or Citilink. Prefer Garuda always when they aren't too expensive.

Your story does not surprise me in the slightest. I think it's funny how people complain about Jetstar or Tiger being 1 hour late to take off…

      • What were you doing in Surabaya and Yogyakarta?

        • My Mrs is originally from Surabaya, so we go back there every couple of years. I'd never been to Jogja at the time so she took me there to see Borobudur and all the other cool stuff. We always fly via Denpasar because we live in Perth, cheaper and quicker than flying via CGK.

    • hand written boarding pass

Hope you snapped a picture of that.

    • +1

Moat people would think that you're telling porkies but I know that when it comes to flying with LionAir, there's a chance you might end up arriving in the wrong city.

I've heard all the unbelievable stories about them from my Indo friends - from missing baggages, 6 hours delays to landing in the wrong city!

  • great deal OP! would be totally keen if hadnt spent all my life savings on all these hot travel deals being posted on ozb hahah next time.

    • +1

I'm always debating whether I can book every time an awesome deal appears on Ozbargain… Enjoy your other booked trips!

      • lol i know mate, and we travel a lot so travel deals definitely are dope as. making previously unplanned trips to china and nam this year thanks to ozb. no more for this year, work and lack of money wont let me haha :(

  • What's the aircraft type?

    • New Boeing 737-900ER I'm pretty sure.

    • Paper.

      • any type but MH370 type.

  • Thanks for the post. Easter sorted.

  • I bet this is why Tiger Air got pushed out of their Bali routes… to free up slots for this Indonesian owned airline. That whole thing was just dodgy.

    • +1

Except Malindo has been flying from Perth to Bali for quite a while now, way before the Tiger thing happened.

      • +1

Ngurah Rai airport is operating at it limit of available take off and landing slots…. Before Tiger lost their slots there was no free capacity to accommodate additional flights. Now there is…

  • +3

If it's being managed by Lion Air, please don't consider using them as Lion Air is notorious for their bad safety rating and customer service.

  • +1

I tried booking and got a message after hitting the confirm button saying there was an error ring the customer service centre. Tried again and got the same message. Tried one more time then got a message saying "System detected there is another booking (Booking ID : Failed Status : Pending for Payment Confirmation ) with same details. The previous booking might be issued when we get confirmation from Bank. Please check your bank records before you make another duplicate booking. this might lead to your bank account charged twice. If its intended, Please check again and click 'Continue' Button."

Pretty dodgy - not sure I want to fly with them now. Don't know if they are going to charge my account or not.

  • I ended up buying tix for Easter period - their system adds extra fees as you progress to final payment but return tix for under $400 is still pretty good.

    • What extra fees?

ACCC on Drip Pricing "any additional fees and charges must clearly be disclosed to you at the beginning of the online purchasing process." https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/accc-reaches-agreement…

    • I didn't notice any fees at all? From the beginning til end, my price never changed. Very odd

      • thanks

      • Me either.

  • Do not fly this airline. In fact, do not fly any Indonesian airlines except for Garuda. Do not confuse the safety of air travel in general with the safety of flying these airlines.

ABC's foreign correspondant covers it pretty well.
    http://www.abc.net.au/foreign/content/2015/s4455259.htm

The chaos reported by others on the ground is a symptom of the chaos right through the company. Including pilots and maintenance.
