  • Lumo currently has 30% off electricity and 17% off gas. that's the total bill.
    Haven't compared rates though.

    • That applies to Vic only. NSW its Red Energy.

      • Red Energy offering same deal in NSW? link??

        • +1

No. I meant Lumo is Red Energy in NSW. But NSW discount is only 10% off total bill.

        • @revivor: Lumo isn't Red Energy in NSW, they are just two different brands now owned by the same company with different target markets. They dont share the same customer database. I know because I worked in the it department for one of them.

AGL are the most expensive electricity and gas supplier.

    • electricity and gas supplier.

Is AGL a supplier of anything? In Victoria, it's neither gas distributor nor electricity distributor but it retails both.
What does a retailer actually do besides outsource a call centre and bill?

      • +1

AGL is actually one of the largest electricity generators in the country. (albeit yes I believe they don't have any ownership in the power transmission and distribution networks)

This sort of marketing of energy should be banned , just searching for the Kwh rates and daily service charges (electricity for example) with any of these plans is a joke. The charges are hidden so deep on any of these companies web pages, it's a Alice down the rabbit hole maze finding what the 'real' prices are.

Got cornered once by the 'extinct bird' rep in my local mall, asked him 5 times what the actual charges and rates were, finally once he printed them out the charges were 30% dearer than what I was already paying, 20% off is all he was trained to say.

I found calling them directly and asking for detailed charges works best. Ask for the c/pKW brake down (Eg peak, off peak, next peak etc). This will help you compare the different rates offered better. Also different supply charges with each company.

AGL was better than my previous supplier so for me it was an easy choice until I find something better again. The 'no exit fees' helps buy time till you find a better deal.

Mikmac I totally agree with you, calling and talking to a rep is the only method to get satisfaction. Don't worry I have a reasonable locked in 2 year rate. Always ask for the charges including GST as well.

A good place to start is getting a daily supply charge of less than $1 with GST I found this charge is usually jacked up with any of these 20% discount deals.

I didn't have any trouble the other week finding what the rates AGL charge are….

  • These rates are expensiver than my current provider origin

  • Whats a good provider to go with in NSW? currently with DODO

    • I have joined Red Energy for about 5 months, they are not bad & probably one of the cheapest.

      • I checked and in my area it is ausgrid, it's super expensive, comparitabley with my current one, hope they have deals soon?

        • so is mine; switched from AGL to Red Energy.

I calculated that I saw about 10%; which is ok

        • Ausgrid is the electricity distributor. Red Energy or AGL etc are the retailer that sells the electricity to you.

  • +1

They can make it $100 per kwh then 99.6% off and still make it more expensive than the current rate now.

  • Less than 30% is no deal.

  • +2

Avoid AGL all together, they are the most expensive provider and have the worse customer service out of all the reputable providers, Absolute joke they are. The only reason they exist is because they are the first providers, that are sold to new renters or new home builders or the worse thing they do is sell their crap service to elderly people and overcharge them aswell. Best scammers in the gas and electricity market

Beware these charlatans. Their billing system is disgraceful.
Check this from my online account… http://imgur.com/a/ATI03
Says I have a bill of $213.69, but clicking the PDF link brings up a bill of $196.54, to be debited on 20 Feb, yet online says I will be debited $37.39.
    So confusing.
It's a reconciliation nightmare. I will be porting out shortly. I'd rather pay 2% more and have my finances in order.

    FWIW I'm on a 26% discount.

Oh, and on my gas account, they charged me $1000 for my last quarterly bill, usually around $100… instead of taking an incremental reading, they charged me from a meter reading of zero!

  • I'm with Alinta Energy. They spell out clearly all of the rates and supply charges before you enter anything but your post code.

You really need to know your usage rates and do cost comparisons yourself. Also, check how long the discount applies for!

They all offer ~20-30% discount, which just means over inflated prices.

  • My experience with electricy in QLD. Started changing to Click Energy as they were cheaper and offered 2 x $50 bonuses.
Origin rung me to offer me cheaper price to stay.
I ring Click with this info and they offer me cheaper price still!
When it's actually changed over Origin ring and offer yet cheaper still, and offer discount on my Gas! I said too late, should have offered that before.
    TL:DR. NEGOTIATE

  • Join, and once first bill received, move on to a more competitive retailer.

Otherwise, if you plan to stay, no deal.

We are with AGL and get 30% off electricity (maximum discount) and 30% off gas (maximum discount) this is price matching tasmania hydro(found through iselect)

Also this discount advertised here is a conditional discount so not a true discount, it also has a contract.

We have NO contract, signed up and price matched the day after. On top of this you can get any concession discounts too.

  • Just while we are on the topic - anyone specifically for or against Energy Australia?

I have bundled electricity and gas with them, and have not yet found the time to compare against other providers.

    • Personally I would rather not give my money to a Chinese company if I can avoid it.

There is nothing at all Australian about Energy Australia!

      • Oh man really?

I feel dumber than when I thought 100% beef patties at maccas was referring to the meat content…

I currently have a 29% discount with AGL (electricity only) which they have increased to 32% after I commenced the process to switch to Origin.
