£GB would be doubly impressive.
I get it! :-)
im not sure whats so good about this? you can build your own server for half that price.
and some people drive Fords others drive Porsches, both are cars….
This one's for Apple devotees. These people may cosider this to be a good deal considering Apple is so tight!!! Still … some successful people just like Macs … just like some like Fords and some like Porches
fair enough guys, im just saying it "boasts"
ftp/vpn/wiki etc
you could do this on xp :/ or linux for that matter :/
EDIT: actually, except VPN, most good NAS machines can do all features advertised.
The Apple mac mini's are great value for what they offer. It is a much cheaper solution than Windows Server for small businesses. And a whole lot easier to set up than linux. So it's not just for Apple devotees. Considering the price of OS X Snow Leopard server with unlimited licences, it's great value.
On the other side of the coin, if money is a factor and you have time to burn, or experience setting up a linux server, than yeah you'll save money.
Agreed. Price this against a server with Windows server software (and client licences) for a fairer comparision to see the benefits for business running this setup (even if they run Windows client PCs). Good deal given the limited discount opportunities for this.
I thought this is the "previous" model of the Mac Mini Server. Why is this "new"?
New as in New Condition (not a refurb). They are indeed the previous generation model, but the differences are tiny. 0.13Ghz higher CPU speed, 320M graphics (instead of 9400m), smaller size and an SD card slot. None of these make a huge difference for use as a server (not to justify $400 difference anyway).
I think a Mac Mini automatically disqualifies itself from being a proper server. I understand using a tower Mac, but can't rap my head around the usefulness of a Mac mini server. Unless it makes a good server based on how little power it draws, but that's it's only upside as a server in my eyes. But regardless a good deal.
It's meant to be for small businesses that use Mac clients, and don't need the power of a Mac Pro / XServe (or the screen on a normal iMac). OSX Server integrates a lot of things nicely with OSX Clients. Its still a good option for a mixed Win/Mac environment. If it was all windows clients though, you would be better off with Windows Server. Still, a similar spec dell (think T110 w/ Server 2k8) with the same 2x500gb hdd space etc would be in the same ballpark pricewise.
T110 Dell with dualcore 2.8ghz, 4gb ram, 1tb hdd = $995.40
No OS included. Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Server 2008 X32 SP2 Standard Ed. Eng (5 CALs),FI = $1,189.10 extra
Also OSX server allows an unlimited number of clients (users) for no extra charge and has mail server, etc capabilities built-in whereas with Windows you would require Small Business Server software or Exchange for more than just file sharing. Like with any $ decision businesses should evaluate options (incl. Mac and Linux eg. http://www.linux-mag.com/id/7662) before spending and not just go with the flow locking themselves into an expensive life of licence and training upgrades. Most end users wouldn't have a clue what technology is running behind the scenes on a server and choice of client O/S doesn't limit choice of server O/S. We can all use Ozbargain via different browsers/client OS but most wouldn't have a clue what software/platform provides the services!
$GB is heaps :P
