  • Do dried herbs and spices go out of date?

    • +4

I think the best before date allows about 18 months. Remember though there's a difference between best before and use by.

      • +5

Clearly you have N.I what you're talking about.

        We're discussing spices not wine!

    • +5

Technically no imo, but they will lose pungency and flavour.

    • +1

      definitely…

  • there are 2 different products on special: the correct link for the above herbs/spices is this https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-buys/special-buys-wed-1-m…

    • +1

Okay thanks I tried to update the post.

  • +5

Note that the last time I looked it was made in China, and so I didn't buy.

    • +2

German shop in Australia selling Chinese goods.

German shop in Australia selling Chinese goods.

With the Frozen berries, you can add grown in South America

And selling Coles women’s deodorant as a shoe deodorising spray.

          They are getting innovative.

      • +1

They are "packed in South Africa from imported ingredients", probably from half a dozen other countries.

    • +4

I hope they have learn their lesson here….
"Aldi and supermarket supplier Menora have admitted to selling nearly 190,000 units of adulterated oregano products over a one-year period and have promised never to do it again.

The budget grocery chain and Menora have signed court enforceable undertakings with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, committing to conduct annual testing of the composition of their herb and spice products."

      • -1

Menora is the same company that makes Chobani

        • Menora is a marketing and distribution business. They don't own Chobani.

These are normally $1.99 each so this deal saves about $9.80.

Not really, because nobody would normally buy all those in one go.

    • Plus

      50% of 45 is 22.5

      • +2

Please. What is 50% more than 30?

        • +1

Sorry, didn't have my evening coffee yet :)

        • +2

          @bargainparker: but it is 50% more. 0.5*30+30=45
It'd be different if you were saying 50% less, which is what your calc showed. If you started with 22.5 50% more wouldn't get you to 45, only a doubling or 100% more would. You were correct in both, depending on how you viewed the problem.

        • +5

          @Name:

So I was right after all :)

          Nah 50% of 30 is 15 so 30+15=45

My evening coffee kicked in :)

    • +9

OzBargain is all about stuff we wouldn't normally buy haha.

    • I did! As a starter kit.

  • +13

What, there are more than 11 Herbs and Spices?

  • +9

I just threw out about 8 unopened jars of spices that had expired 3 years ago. While the above is a good deal, make sure you're buying spices you will actually use, otherwise you are wasting money.

Going forward I won't be buying spice packs again. I'll spend a bit more on individual ones, but probably save more overall as I won't be throwing out expired unopened spices.

    • +4

That was silly, you can put them in a frypan over a low heat for a short time to recirculate the natural oils (or so my chef explained it) which will extend their useful life.

      • +2

Nice tip! Thanks I'll keep that in mind for spices I use. Although it would have just extend the life of the 8 until I threw them out eventually. I never use them.

  • If you have the jars and a local kitchen supply store its cheaper to buy amounts of what ypu need.keep in mind while they seem expencive a small amount is alot in herbs ect.

Im pretty sure the aldi caper jar for instance was like 7 grams.

  • +2

I try to keep my more expensive spices in the freezer.

    • +5

I keep my nutmeg in my undies.

  • +5

Sugar is now a spice? Aldi pre-empting the sugar tax? No sir, this is not sugar in our cola. We are selling spiced sugarless cola.

  • Does Ozbargain realise the value of a good Spanish Smoked Paprika?

    • +3

      No.

    • +4

Post a deal and we will.

    • +1

      Hungarian smoked is better

  • +1

The second pack is a lot better. I'm getting it. Thanks, OP.

  • +1

I'm getting one of these spice racks for the pool room.

    • Is there actually a rack? Aren't these just boxes of bottles, albeit prettily displayed?

      • +2

I'm getting a pretty box of spice bottles for the pool room.

  • Go a weeks worth of jalapeño's instead? ;)
    https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-buys/special-buys-wed-1-m…
    I like em… But almost 2kg?

  • +2

Our experience with a spice pack that looked a lot like this from ALDI a few years back was that the lids on the spice bottles were very crappy and didn't seal properly. That meant the spices, once opened, lost potency very quickly and spice blends tended to absorb moisture and solidify. It also meant there was no point reusing the jars with cheaper refills in plastic bags (rather than new jars).

    • Aha! For some weird reason, I kept all the empty spice jars that I bought from Coles, Woolworths and Foodland for a while. There are like twenty of them on the top of my kitchen cupboard. Looks like they will come in handy now. :)

  • +1

If you live in the ACT, go to the Nut Shoppe instead. You can get any spice in bulk for cheap. I have 500g bags of nutmeg, paprika, cinnamon bark, etc. Spices are the heroes in our dishes so we use them a lot.

    • +2

      who are the villians?

      • +2

        The cook.

        • The thief!

        • His wife and…..

      • +1

        who are the villians?

To find out, you'll have to buy the first Aldi pack that includes the Vanillans

        • Cracker. And here I was suspecting Colonel Mustard.

  • +2

I tried the ground cinnamon in this brand a while back and had to throw it out as I swear they had cut the damn stuff with what resembled sawdust.
I.e. really really poor quality - can't imagine the others are any better.

  • I wonder how many OTHER ingredients are added in to make it cheaper like the Oregano scandal.

    Extract from the article actually mentions, other ingredients found in Aldi products;

Olive leaves and other ingredients were found in Aldi’s Stonemill product, Master of Spices, Hoyt’s, Spice & Co, Menora, Spencers and G. Fresh.

  • +1

Also. not all spices are created equal. A lot of the stuff sold by supermarkets is rubbish and there was a scandal a few years ago where most of the Basil being sold wasn't real Basil

I'll have a look at these as Aldi stuff is usually pretty high quality but I buy most of my spices at my local Asian store - better and cheaper

  • I just want the bottles, will not be able to use all of them.
