    link works great :)

  • +16

I'll just quickly Google what this is.

    • What's wrong with the explanation and youtube video provided in the link? :)

      • +1

I didn't want to click on the link without knowing what it is.

    • .. That's exactly where the deals link goes to, linking here reduces the accuracy of the clicks/visits of the deal above and in the back-end.
I believe a link is only needed if there's a mistake in the post and even then, the OP should just be notified to change it. (Unless that's whats happened)

      • +4

At the time there was no link.

        • Then, I thank you for your service, apologies :P

  • The form requires a Company Name, Email address and Phone number, but I just used some random fake info and the form went through.

Of course, now I cannot check my email to see when the delivery will be processed LOL

    • +2

Eh, not the best practice to ensure future promotions for ozbargain users.
Either way, I suggest getting a $1 sim or one from a deal and then also using that sim to get a google verification when settings up a new gmail.. Then bingo! You've got yourself a legit email and phone number that can be marketed/datamined infinitely for all you care.

      • You van get a legit email without all that crap. No company needs to verify a phone number, so if the fake one doesn't work then they aren't a company you want to deal with anyway.

Do not abuse this Freebie and order just for the sake of a Freebie!

  • Looks like a good, simple design. Do all cars have serpentine belts these days?

    • +8

If you don't know the answer to this don't order it!

      • +2

I disagree faceman54, as a custom installer of all sorts/upholsterer, this is a tool for the LAYMAN person to gauge out a problem with little to no cost so that they can then take it to a specialist if needed. (In saying that.. its accuracy is questionable. So I'm torn between the idea of it since no mechanic I know will use a tool like this)

To answer your question snapper, a very high proportion of cars do use serpentine styled belts, I believe one of the only cars I've come across without that style is a Prius in the last few years.

        • Who are you calling Snapper? You are mistaken. If a diyer doesn't know the basic's spread of cars, then they probably aren't that well informed to be making such changes to their engine. And if you knew the answer, why did you bother posting in the first place?

Some modern cars still use timing chains, such as Mazda 3's.

        • +11

@faceman54: At a guess, I'd say he's calling snapper snapper.

        • @faceman54: "If a diyer doesn't know the basic's spread of cars, then they probably aren't that well informed to be making such changes to their engine." - Who said they should? I said it was a guide for when you do need a professional, just like its designed to be.

        • +4

@faceman54: Faceman, the serpentine belt snapper is referring to generally drives the water pump and ancillaries - alternator, power steering pump etc. in a modern vehicle. Older vehicles usually used one or more vee-belts for the same purpose. Whether a car is fitted with a timing chain or belt has no bearing on whether it uses a sepentine belt or not.

        • +1

          @faceman54:
          "Who are you calling Snapper?"

Probably the dude you replied to, whos handle is snapper

        • @faceman54:

If you're more informed than the diy'ers you are referring to, why are you mentioning timing chains?

Edit: Boodek is on top of it already.

        • @BartholemewH: no point in talking about Prius's because it's an electric hybrid, same as the new Camry's. They don't have timing chains. Something steel needs to power water pumps.. etc in these cars. Just as a Mazda 3 uses a chain it it still needs pump/ac etc. talking about real cars here, not hybrids.

  • Surprsingly link still works from same deal 2 years ago: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/187930. But OzBargain has grown since then…

It's usually pretty easy to tell if the belt needs replacement visually and by feel.

I don't see a need for this, other than as a sales tool which it is categorized as.

"your belt might seem fine, but look at this orange thing. See how it moves, well that means you can pay me for this gates belt at a nice margin as add on to your usual overpriced oil change, where I can assure you the apprentice will overfill your oil and under tighten the filter".

    • I just buy spares and wait for them to break.
But if it's been 40000km and your going for a long drive then it might also be a good time to change as well.

      • See this is for serpentine belts which is not relevant to my vehicle and thinking.

        • +1

Wow, you are in the running for the award for "Most incomprehensible sentence of the week".

        • @llama:

I know what you mean. I tried to read it back and found it to hard to correct.

  • +5

Seriously thought it was a free pant's belt…my bad

    • i thought the same thing when i saw the title, dissapointed :(

  • Damn just replaced my serpentine belt and threw the old in the bin. Would have been curious to test. 12 years old and 120k but the belt still looked new, but changed as a precaution

  • +2

Last one was useless, this one looks the same. I work in a parts shop and the last gauge with the finger reckoned every new belt on the shelf was worn.

    • +4

Definitely works then, as a sales aid.

  • +1

    Got 5 for my tesla

  • +2

At a glance I thought this is to make extra hole on the men's belt…

  • Seems like a bit of a gimmick. Generally unless you're missing big sections of ribs or it's got an obvious nick or tear then your belt's fine. If it's making noise (squealing or chirping) then check out your tensioner for wear or maladjustment.

A new belt generally costs bugger all and is super easy to fit if you order one online from a place like RockAuto. I did my water pump ($3) and serpentine belts ($30) at 200,000km even though the belts were looking OK. I figure that having both peace of mind and spares while travelling for less than a couple of hours' work is a pretty good deal.

  • it's free, why not. might come handy one day…

  • Still waiting for mine…

    • Yep waiting for mine also. Vaguely remember signing up for one back on the original post but didn't get one from that either
