FREE Gates Belt Wear Gauge (for Cars Serpentine Belts) Shipped Nation Wide

230

For the automotive heads out there,

Gates has been giving away their belt gauges free for many years now. I just found out recently. These gauges seem to be quite innovative and sturdy. They say modern EPDM belts wear out before having cracks on them, so should be checked for wear. See their brochures and posters on how to use them.

All you have to do is send them an email, including your address of course, to [email protected] . I got mine a few days after.

I really hope this doesn't get ozbargained because they might just close the deal, so in the future they will only offer it to shops, and sell to the general public. I reckon if you don't at least change your motor oil by yourself, these gauges would be pretty useless because wear is not the only thing to check on belts. Your trustworthy mechanic should be able to tell you when to change your belts.

  • Love to have one but not skilled enough to use on my belt. Which went at 26k then 46k then the service centre back off when I got stroppy and perhaps used a mechanic. Thanks any way + deal.

I think Repco (or maybe super cheap?) were giving them out free before when a belt was purchased. I've also seen bags of them in mechanic workshops before.

  • I'm actually going to grab one although I don't really need it right now… Because I already know my belt is pretty stuffed as it slips quite often when I first turn on the AC!

    • Hi Snoop. I'm no mechanic, but if the belt is already tentioned a small amount of hand soap on the inner of the belt lubricates it enough to stop the squeel usually. My 2c

      • Yes it does thank you… As does WD40, White Grease, Dri Lube sticks, etc. But mine is actually slipping!

      • I was told not to put anything on belts. Especially not the belt dressing crap. Only spray water to eliminate belt noise and stuff. Squeaking might be because belt is under-tensioned. To be honest, i still struggle to tension my belt at the proper amount, its too damn hard even though i have a Krik-it

        • Automatic belt tensioners (for serpentines) on a lot of cars nowadays.

        • @Snoop: oh ok lol my car doesnt belong to the nowadays group haha but hey, i heard the tensioners do wear out as well, something to keep in mind

  • Wouldn't these be specially 'calibrated' for their type of belts? Or are belt grooves all standard? If not, might be misleading if brand x has different depth/width grooves and this tool indicates it's fine when it's actually worn out?

    • I reckon they are pretty standard because only a handful of manufacturers make pulleys (individual and for alternators), and belts are suppose to grip onto those. I could be wrong.

Btw, Gates also have a free smart phone app to tell you if the belt is good or not, and they say its accurate too. I find it quite amusing.

  • Sweet - my Commo doesn't even have a service interval for the belt, usually I throw it after 100,000km, but this would be very handy :)

I reckon 100,000 km is long enough to change belts? They probably have lots of cracks in them no? They are cheap insurance anyways

  • I wait till they snap then its time to pull out the stockings :P
