Dell XPS 15 9560 (15.6" FHD, i7-7700HQ, GTX 1050, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) for $1839.20 - Dell eBay

1220
COMP20

This is the cheapest I've ever seen a new XPS 15 from Dell. It's the new version with the 7th Gen CPU and GTX 1050, not the old one with the 960M.

1080P Display ( I would get it over the 4k - as you have better battery).
7th gen HQ i7 CPU - a proper quad core and not a watered down i7 like the "U" series i7's.
GTX1050 - One of the most powerful graphics cards on such a small laptop.

For $1840 - one of the best laptop deals I have seen in a while.

Solid deal, although I'd like to make users aware of the fact that this unit doesn't come with a native Ethernet slot

    • Yes, lack of Ethernet is what stops me pulling the trigger on one of these.

      • -4

how stupid are you, it's an ultrabook, get an alienware, if you want ports.

      • +1

a simple usb to ethernet wouldn't be the worst option

    • +2

That would add some thickness to the laptop. Ultrabooks aim to be as thin as possible.

  • +1

+2% Cashrewards will get it down to $1804

Also, worth noting this is a 256gb SSD version.

    • On the XPS 15 you can upgrade the SSD and Ram though so it should be okay

  • +1

I noticed it straight away and was tempted. Hard to decide though, a lot of money..

Probably one of those 1k Lenovo deals would suffice but I love the design of the XPS 15. I want it mainly for photo editing and general browsing/typing, but will do some occasional gaming.

    • If you do photo editing and want to spend less- wait for something like this to pop up again:

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/288409

You should get a dedicated graphics card as adobe lightroom/photoshop enhances performance with Gtx 7 series +.

I've had a surface pro 4 before and I can tell you, doing local adjustments without a graphics card on a high resolution display - is terrible. It's like playing a game at 10fps. The mouse just becomes laggy and difficult to work with.

      • I think the XPS 15 FHD screen is better than Lenovo. I'm probably going to pull the trigger on this, I've been waiting a long time now, seems a great deal and they seem to hold value well. Might get a 4K monitor in future. When thinking about it, I don't need 4K when on the road. Also, for an extra $400 this is a way better deal than the XPS 13 posted today.

57% sRGB on the FHD IPS display though. :/

        • +1

57% is insanely poor quality :(

    • +1

This has a GPU that's actually better than the onboard iGPU and Thunderbolt 3 for hooking up really fast external devices such as a powerful desktop external GPU.

Those Lenovos are toys compared to this in specs, build quality and design - but that's why this costs nearly twice as much.

      • Not necessarily - that deal above https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/288409 - would be more than sufficient for most users. It has a 950m!

        • +2

That is a step up from the 940m and low voltage crippled i7 they usually get posted with but the 950m is still nearly a 3 year old GPU. That is not a bad deal at all though. I guess I have Lenovo fatigue where the same people post 100 Lenovo deals looking all so similar and average that I missed seeing that some of them now have a 950m.

The 1050 however looks to be more than twice as powerful than the 950m.

2 years ago there were deals on the Inspiron 7559 series for ~$1k on this website with a true quad i7, 8GB ram and 960m so it's hard for me to see the value in the new Lenovos that have similar specs for the same money.

        • @c0balt: Agreed the 1050 is amazing - but I think for $1k vs $1.8k - it's still reasonable value for money.

I really don't think people need powerful proper graphics cards unless they play the latest games. Look at the surface book which is meant to be a photoshop/lightroom oriented tablet - it runs the 940m.

I would probably spend the $1.8k and get the XPS 15 if I was to buy one - build quality/size, overall package plays a big role for me. But that $1k laptop Lenovo is really a solid package for those who don't want to spend the money.

        • +1

          @Tech and cars:

The Surface Book is an incredibly over priced buggy POS that users lament over the price to performance as soon as anyone tried to use it for content creation. It's twice as expensive as a Surface Pro, but it's pretty much still in the same league of performance with a 2 core CPU and anaemic GPU that's not much more powerful than the iGPU on the CPU.

SPB looks nice though, and it performs stellar to those who would have been fine with a $500 laptop.

I wouldn't spend $1000 on a lenovo when this is in the same specs/build quality but has a 960m GPU instead a year ago. Also has an empty ram and M2 slot for later upgrades.
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/238048

        • @c0balt: just for the sake of accuracy, the 7559's you're referring to were $1100 after discount and equipped with an i5 6300.

      • The Lenovo keyboard is way better than the Dell keyboard. Dell just took the small chicklet keyboard from the XPS13 and put it on the -15. The battery on the 15 is also non-removable, and it has some fan noise issues.

Pity, because in all other ways it beats the Lenovo's.

        • +2

These sorts of things are what makes it so damn hard to choose a laptop. I LOVE the keyboard of the Lenovo, just by looking at pictures I can tell the XPS 15 looks pretty average for extended typing sessions. It is important for me because I do a lot of typing. Every single laptop I look at has a negative to it, whether it be lack of thunderbolt/usb-c, a bad screen, non upgradeable ram/ssd..

But I still think the XPS 15 is the best value right now. I was going to get X1 Yoga, but who can justify that with older tech even on sale price compared to this.

        • @nubzy: i'm in the same boat - my 3 front-runners were the HP Elitebook x360 (after the HP Corporate discount, you can get a top-spec one for ~$2400), the HP Spectre x360 15" (not available in Australia, unfortunately) and the Lenovo X1 Yoga Gen 2 (available in April, apparently)

          Key features for me:
          - battery life
          - thunderbolt 3
          - good keyboard + touchpad
          - portability
          - 16gb ram or expandable ram
          - Happy with the "Watered down U series" or quad core i7

Another possible winner was the Gigabyte Aero 14 - huge battery, but no TB3.

        • @nubzy: Yep. I like my XPS 13, but the keyboard is just acceptable.

This is OK, as the XPS13 is meant to be small and portable, but the XPS15 is larger and Dell were lazy to put the 13's keyboard in it.

I have an old Lenovo T430 with a fantastic keyboard.

I guess you can't have it all and have to compromise. Pity, because in the $2000 price range you'd expect the best.

  • So is this the best deal for a gaming laptop at this price range?

    • This is better for gaming - but bigger/heavier:

      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-Inspiron-15-7000-Gaming-Core…

      1519.20.

It has the GTX 1050 Ti which is better than the GTX 1050 that the XPS 15 (this deal) has.

      • +1

that is awesome specs but reviews for the screen is disappointing

        reviews here

        • I was close to pulling the trigger on the dell 15 7000 gaming but the TN screen is what stopped me. I found out you can actually replace the screen with relative ease if you can be arsed working on a brand new unit though.

        • @Thinktankak:

How much would a new screen set you back and can this be done from Dell prior to buying?

        • @designate:

Run an external monitor/keyboard/mouse ($150 monitor, $20 keyboard and mouse)

        • +1

          @Tech and cars:

Yes, that is an option or replace it like this
In saying that, your option defeats the purpose of purchasing a laptop :)

        • +2

          @designate:

Agreed - but for me I work at a desk most of the time, so I'm happy to leave a work station set up.

Then when I'm on the move, use the 'basic' display. Sacrifice a bit of screen quality for the performance/price.

  • Does anybody know if the RAM upgradable on this version ? Or is it soldered in to the motherboard

    • fairly sure both RAM and SSD are upgradeable, but can someone confirm?

      • +1

I have upgraded my SSD from the 256 GB to 1 TB. Can confirm.

    • not soldered according to this

    • Yes can be upgraded. 2 slots.

    • +2

RAM is smack bang in the middle when you open up the underside (from memory).

  • Does this one come with fingerprint scanner?

    • +7

Click the deal > Tech specs. It took me less than 30 seconds to find out - the same amount of time it would've taken you to type your comment.

      • Hate when people dont read and ask. Btw does it have an ethernet port? = )

  • +2

This is a good deal for the base model. Comes with fingerprint scanner but the deal breaker is the battery size which is almost half the size on the more specced out 9560 xps 15

    • true but the 1080p saves battery and the kaby lake has improved upon sky lake for battery life. I still would expect at least 7 hours from this one.

  • +2

It says 56WHr battery as the primary battery on the tech spec sheet, not the larger 84WHr battery the 4K version is likely to get.

I doubt the battery life would be better.

A well-built laptop for the price though, had been using 960m version for a couple of months. Only wish it has incorporated one finger lift lid/hinged.

    • +1

Didn't know that there are different batteries!

    • +1

      That really bothers me.
Mine has the 56Wh battery and the space that an 84Wh battery would take is used by an empty 2.5" SSD caddy.
I'll install my own 84Wh battery some day.

      • +3

I ordered the 84Wh from Dell for $165. Totally worth it. The FHD screen doesn't sap as much juice as the 4K screen, and the battery lasts me 10 hours of typing here and there throughout the work day with the screen set to low-mid. The best upgrade I made to it.

        • +2

          You can order it direct???
I'll definitely do it soon then! Thanks for the heads up.

  • How do you think this laptop will cope with 3d applications like blender for intense 3d rendering? Is the 1050 decent enough? or should i just get a laptop with a 1070?

    Thanks =)

    • +1

Do you have a laptop/desktop that currently can use blender? What does that run?

If it's something like a 970m - this 1050 will be the same power, so you should be okay.

GTX 1050 is now a full desktop card in the laptop - this is a first. Before we used to always get the equivalent "1050M" - mobile versions, which were roughly 50% of the performance.

It's incredible what they've packaged into something so small/sleek!

    • +2

Ideally, any "intense" rendering will be happening on a proper workstation, with a laptop like this for light work.

The 1050 should handle most things you throw at it. Just be aware of heat (If rendering for long periods) potentially limiting the lifespan of the laptop's components. Lithium Ion batteries are particularly susceptible to heat damage.

      • heat (If rendering for long periods) potentially limiting the lifespan of the laptop's components

Yeah I wouldn't concern myself with that.

      • If you are worried about heat - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/293407 - this looks like it has more graphics power and better cooling!

      • Laptop cooling pads?

  • Anyone know whether its 2 4gb rams in there or 1 8gb?

  • Can anyone recommend a dock for this laptop? I have a couple of screens I want to connect up - one DVI and one HDMI. Thanks in advance.

    • The recommended Dell dock is the new TB16. Pricey though. Think it was over $400 last time I checked.

    • I have TOshiba dynadock. It's not perfect, but it has been reliable. I have 8 things connected to it.

      • Does that plug into the single thunderbolt port?

I'm assuming it doesn't power the laptop though, so would need to have that plugged in separate.

        • I don't know about thunderbolt. I plug it into USB.
No it doesn't power the laptop.

  • Has anyone purchased a laptop under a dell sale and 20% coupon? For TRS reasons, what price will the invoice show?

    $2499, $2,299, $1839 ???

    • Also interested to know the answer. Also like to know if the invoice mentions eBay anywhere. If it doesn't, it might be possible to claim cashback from Powerbuy. Somehow think it will though..

    • not sure if this is helpful, but on my last purchase from eBay with a 20% discount (vacuum from Bing Lee), the receipt from the seller (not the payment receipt from eBay) showed the full price of the vacuum before the 20% discount. YMMV

    • should be full price on the invoice.

    • +2

I've found my Dell XPS 15 invoice during the 20% off in April 2016.
On the second page it says this:

      Subtotal $ 2,271.82
      GST$ 227.18
      Total incl. GST $ 2,499.00

and my PayPal lists the price as:

      Other discounts -$499.80 AUD
      Total $1,999.20 AUD

      Hope that helps :)

      • +1

        Perfect! Thank you!

BTW - How are/did you find that XPS? Still happy with it? Decent build quality?

        Cheers

        • Yes, I do love it.

Use it for studies, so don't need to worry about charging it constantly, and I only rely on one USB for a wireless mouse dongle.

It feels quite tough too, not flimsy.
The top panel on my laptop has a dent in it now from the charger though. Had them in the same bag and the charger is really heavy.

  • This has the low battery capacity! 57WHr

    • -1

so what, it has the 1080p screen to save an extra 2-3 hours battery.

      • I would rather the 97WHr.
How many hours does it last?

So are you saying that FHD with the smaller battery lasts longer?

        • -1

i'd say it would last around the same, if not more, than the 4k model which has the 97WHr battery.

        • @nubzy: Highly doubt it, the FHD with the big battery gets upto 10hrs, this battery is half the size so you are looking at around 5hrs

        • -1

@Hashstrid: Yeah it is hard to find information for 9560 battery life as it is still new. I'd be interested to hear what the figures are like. Didnt realise the 9550 had a larger battery.

        • @nubzy: 9550 owner here, it also came with a smaller battery, depending on load out, basically drops 2.5 inch drive for extra battery space, so any version using an SSD was able to fit the larger battery.

        • True, but thats all extra cost. Changing ssd and battery.
Personally I dont think the $1800 price tag is worthy of the specs especially taking the battery into consideration

      • Stop spreading wrong information. The FHD with a battery capacity of 56Whr does not provide 2-3 extra hours.

        http://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-XPS-15-2016-9550-InfinityE…

  • This looks good. What would be the cheapest, reliable way to add an ethernet port though?

    • USB plug in

      • Thanks. I'll look into this if I pull the trigger on the deal.

  • +1

Any idea if there's option to have the 97w battery with the 15 inch?

    • Ask the dell ebay team. They make custom listings if you ask for it. So you can add more ram etc..

      • +3

I've just emailed them to see whether they can custom build for 97W battery..because we know RAM and SSD can be upgraded so that part is okay.

        • +1

Can you let me know if you have any success? I'd like to buy one with the 97W battery too :)

        • +2

@iPwnJ00: yeah I will post there response as soon as I get it

        • +5

          @jnathanc:

          I got my reply, WTFFFFF:

          Hello xxx

With regards to all machines we list, we can upgrade the software but not the hardware due to fixed compatibility.

So unfortunately we cannot provide you with the upgrades you require.

          Kind regards
          yyy

I tried to "harass" them a bit because the Dell website says it's upgradable and the guy says it's not but:

          Hello xxx

The Dell.com.au and the Dell eBay store are two separate channels and therefore have different products, prices and promotions.

As mentioned through the Dell eBay store due to fixed compatibility we can only upgrade the software of the machines we supply.

          Kind regards
          yyy

        • @iPwnJ00: The only things upgradeable are warranty, OS and virus scan.

          Been there done that.

        • @wongsun: yep yep sure Dell. Would of really loved this.

        • @jnathanc:

they make it difficult dont they. i was considering mid spec model but they wouldnt put it on ebay.

i pulled the trigger on this. still a ripper deal, i can manage with the battery. never away from power for long anyway and lots of public spaces provide power points now.

  • Would totally get this if I didn't already have an XPS 13

    • Why not to sell xps 13 then?

  • Can we add an additional HDD to this one?

  • +1

    Want with 97w battery

  • -1

    http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/productdetails/xps-15-9560-la…

Definitely can get in i7, 1080 screen with 97whr battery

  • i just ordered. seemed they are selling well.
i was after an all rounder laptop with a bit of occasional gaming and portability.
    good discount.
hoping this is more reliable than my previous dell latitude which was a dog from day one and since died despite the keyboard, hdd and motherboard being replaced.
    fingers crossed.

  • Can we claim TRS for this purchase? Thank you.

    • Yes you can.

  • +1

Was looking at purchasing exactly this laptop….. Thanks for the post!

(will have to throw in a RAM and HDD upgrade…. but thats all good!)

    • how much is approx cost to upgrade ram and HDD? I think 256/8gb will work for me, but considering for the future..
