Dell XPS 15 9560 (15.6" FHD, i7-7700HQ, GTX 1050, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) for $1839.20 - Dell eBay

1220
COMP20

This is the cheapest I've ever seen a new XPS 15 from Dell. It's the new version with the 7th Gen CPU and GTX 1050, not the old one with the 960M.

1080P Display ( I would get it over the 4k - as you have better battery).
7th gen HQ i7 CPU - a proper quad core and not a watered down i7 like the "U" series i7's.
GTX1050 - One of the most powerful graphics cards on such a small laptop.

For $1840 - one of the best laptop deals I have seen in a while.

Depends…… if you want to double each you are looking at around 800 bucks…… Maybe less if the machine has a single 8 chip in it, might cost 200 bucks for another 8Gb chip…. if its 2x 4GBs then you have to replace them both.

I'll stick with whats installed and then see how we go in a years time. I dont need to store too much… its more for games etc…. Eventually an upgrade will happen!

Maybe in 12+ months time you will be able to get a 1TB disk for similar money.

      • The ebay store can't do hardware changes, only software and warranty (as per the email exchange earlier in the thread).

$173.80 for an additional stick of 8GB to bring it up to 16GB total from DELL online. You could go aftermarket for a bit cheaper.. Maybe $400 for 32GB minus what you'd get for selling the installed 8GB stick.

I was so close to jumping on this deal. Will think it over, as I might get the Inspiron 7000 Gaming as it'd be the better desktop replacement.

        • Thanks to both. it's more than I thought. But to be honest, I think I can get by with the 8gb/256gb. I am about to place my order now, too good to pass up.

      • 8gb 2400mhz ram: $79 http://www.umart.com.au/newsite/goods.php?id=37157 (assuming they use 1 X 8gb ram in the laptop)
        512gb M.2 PCI-E SSD: $255 http://www.umart.com.au/newsite/goods.php?id=36339

Could probably be had cheaper from other sources too, this is just my go-to local computer parts shop.

Last year I got 6700HQ with 960M and I love it, I play my games mainly on that now. With a GTX 1050 you'll have much higher settings than me… You bastards.

  • anyone knows what's the battery life on this?

    • +3

bad battery life… 4-5 hours. Small battery. This is not the FHD with the big battery.

How did I even get negged for this fact? prove me wrong…

      http://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-XPS-15-2016-9550-InfinityE…

Clearly states, average battery run time at 5 hours for light - moderate use…

      56W battery <— do you understand that…

      • Wrong model in your link. This is for 9560. Any battery info on 9560?

        • These models do not differ dramatically. The update is very minor( slight improvement in battery life + better SSD) besides the GPU. You can assume safely that battery life will improvements will be very very minimal.

EDIT: If you think a 56W batter is going to provide you with more than 5 hours of battery life… you are dreaming period.

          @Vmeisterkun:

This is something I found posted and this is with a 97W battery:

I got the XPS15 9560 FHD 512Gbssd, 16gb ram, 97Whr battery. I completely charged the battery. At 100% I played a 60 minute 1080p x264 file in a loop at 30% screen brightness It took almost exactly 5 hours before the laptop shut down because the power was below 5% . I find that pretty disappointing.

          https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/5q37wd/xps_15_9560_te…

      • i had the 9550 version before and the battery life was pretty underwhelming. If 9560's going to be no different, one might be better off getting the 13'' XPS instead just purely for battery life.

  • having read posts on the 9560, I cancelled my order. ongoing quality issues it seems. seems little has changed with dell. hit and miss. sad their products dont have consistent high standards

    • +3

You will find issues with every product if you look into them. You will drive yourself mad. Just have to bite the bullet and if any issues you have a return period + warranty.

  • +2

I have the previous generation 9550 XPS 15 with an i7 6700HQ, the FHD screen and 512GB SSD which I purchased in July 2016 for $2200. I've got to be honest and say that I don't know what has changed between models but a couple of comments in case anyone is interested for those thinking about this deal:

My thoughts on the previous generation XPS 15 9550:
    - Keyboard is ok, but not great. The feel is not the nicest and one thing that irks me is the lack of dedicated keys for home, end, pgup, pgdown. Those keys are shared with the arrow keys and it means I have to press the FN key combined with those keys to navigate.
    - Trackpad. If you have to use onboard pointer (as opposed to an external mouse) it is fine but the pointer on Thinkpads and Dell Lattitudes is superior (personal preference here).
    - Battery life - Realworld performance has been pretty good. I used to travel a lot and was surprised at how long it lasted. No complaints here but some people may have higher expectations…
    - Screen - pleasantly surprised. Again, no complaints. People (with their own laptop purhases) at my work remark on my screen clarity all the time.
    - Gaming - it heats up, reaches 90 degrees and throttles down resulting in significant FPS drops. Google results in many many people who have encountered the same issue. Fixes include opening it up (and breaking 4 clips which are pretty much impossible to not break) and reapplying thermal paste as well as straightening heat sinks and copper heat pipes (apparently they aren't always mounted flat resulting in less than optimal contact between CPU/GPU and heatsinks. :(. to deal with this issue (And because I would rather avoid opening it up) I am dealing with this with external fan cooling. Note that air intake and exhaust are on the bottom of the unit. This is good from a "it's not going to roast something next to the laptop", however unless you have a laptop cooling pad or stand, it is not optimal as you only have the tiny gap between the bottom of the laptop and the elevation provided by little rubber feet for air cooling.
    - No onboard Ethernet port - oops, I didn't realise this when I purchased! My bad but it was a Shocker! Wifi is stable. Bluetooth drops out all the time and is a known issue. I don't even bother with Bluetooth if I can avoid it.
    - Only 2 USB ports. I thought I could live with this, but it is a pain.

With all of the above being said, I would go for this deal in a heartbeat (but with some research into GPU heat issues first) as all in all, it has been a pretty darn good laptop.

By way of comparison, my last laptops have been 3 generations of Dell Lattitudes and many many Thinkpad T- series. This is obviously not enterprise/corporate grade gear, but I have been pleasantly surprised by the quality. Touch wood! :)

    Happy bargain hunting!

The updated graphics card is probably the best thing to happen for this laptop. GTX 1050 is about twice as fast as the 960M. It also uses a lot less power from what I've read, so it should be able to address the gaming heating issue.

This one has the 7th Gen i7 which is a slight improvement on the 6th gen i7 you have.

  • +1

I was this close to purchasing this laptop. Cancled at the cart.

Ive come to the conclusion that deep down i do not like this deal. Its missing things that i want even though the discount is good. I want more usb ports i want more ram i want a more powerful gpu and a bigger battery. The style and screen is amazing but i dont fall for the trendy design fluff very easy.

I think if you're going to just do light work on this its overpriced to begin with and if you need more power why would you stop at a 1050, the build quality seems ok but there is also reported issue floating around. Id rather wait and see what happens. If you need a laptop fast you are silly not to buy this though.

    • +1

https://www.kongcomputers.com/product-detail/gamers/metabox-… worth a look. Same specifications with USB ports, miniDP, etc.

      1. Select Windows 10 64Bit (+$129)
      2. Select Killer 1535 WiFi (+$49)
        Total cost: $1567

      Optional savings:
      1. BYO Windows (~$100-129 savings*)
      2. Intel 8265 Wifi ($20 savings^)

*Free if you have a product key laying around not in use, otherwise ~$20-30 for a cheap one online.
^Same specifications just without the gaming marketed gimmicks ('improved letancy').

Note I understand (and agree) with the idea of just going full out for a 1070 instead of 1050, but at the $1500 price point a 1050 becomes actually justifiable.

    • Sounds like you want a gaming laptop not an ultrabook. How many USB ports can you expect from a laptop this thin?

Use a bluetooth mouse, that saves one port. What else are you using them for? One should be enough for a USB drive. That leaves you with one type-A and a type-C.

  • can this have refund on change of mind once you order?

    • same boat here, did you manage to find the answer?

  • Half the price of a MBPr, would definitely make the switch

  • Coil whine noise still present on these? I had 3 9550s with the issue…

  • +1

For $1840 - one of the best laptop deals I have seen in a while.

https://www.kongcomputers.com/product-detail/gamers/metabox-… same specs for $1428 BYO Windows ($1567 w/ Windows). Just select killer 1535 under WiFi. If you wanna save $20, select the Intel 8625 WiFi - same specifications just without the gaming gimmick advertising.

Difference is 2x miniDP, 1x Type-C and 1x type-A instead of thunderbolt. Rest is all the same specifications - 7700HQ, GTX 1050, 8GB RAM, 240GB PCI (M.2) SSD, Killer 1535, etc. Note warranty differs, though is arguably similarly priced. Two years on-site is +$99, while the Dell offering has 1 year on-site included. Otherwise 2-years return to base is included. Also has the advantage of being more user-upgradable, though disadvantage of heavier+bulkier.

Tl;Dr: this laptop isn't at all cheap for the specifications - you're paying (a lot) for the portability.

    • +1

Plus it's half a kilo heavier than the Dell!

    • +1

There's a $273 difference. But is it worth it? I would argue yes for reasons below:

-I would argue that resale is a lot better on the XPS. 2 years later, I believe you'll still be able to sell this for $1500. Look at the 9550 models with the 960m.

-Overall finish/quality (not just portability) - XPS series is quite nice, and it is a fair bit smaller with it's near borderless screens.

-The screen quality from what I've read is a fair bit better on the

      • $273 for more portability is really not a lot. I think that's quite decent to be honest. Look at the XPS 13 and the Surface Pro 4 - you can probably buy a Lenovo for $800 that craps all over most surface books for $2000. (that's $1200 for portability).

Finally - if you really want to talk value for money and sacrifice portability - this dell laptop :
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/293407 - $1519 is $48 cheaper and has a GTX 1050ti - which is even better than the metabox deal.

      • The deal is more the combination of deals and/or substitutions, ie purchasing a copy of Windows for ~$20, using an SSD you have laying around, purchasing the cheaper (though equal?) Intel WiFi, etc.

Not at all arguing if the portability is worth it or not - that's for everyone else to decide, but there's a lot about this being the cheapest laptop for its specs when it's not at all the case - it's $250+ over priced for its specs alone. My tl;Dr summarized - you're paying a lot extra for the portability. If you don't need the portability, metabox is an option.

As with resale value, your target audience for the Dell is going to be business or upper-class - a market which usually wouldn't buy second hand. The metabox is targeted at gamers and is quite user upgradable, I'm sure it'd be easy to sell to a teenager who's on a budget and wants a cheap gaming machine.. I can't say I personally know though - this is all assumptions. I've never really even thought about selling a laptop, their value just decreases too quickly to bother.

        • +1

As with resale value, your target audience for the Dell is going to be business or upper-class - a market which usually wouldn't buy second hand.

Hmm dunno about that, I think the fact that they're a comparatively premium product means there'll be a second hand market. Smaller businesses or organizations might want the build/design of an XPS but can't justify paying full price for one, so might rather buy a used XPS than a new Inspiron.

        • @eug:
a friend highly recommended the metabox too but for reason of resale and portability, i went with the xps everythough it will primarily be used around the house.

i think a dell will have the appeal in the second hand market due to the fact it's a well known brand, has a support network, is portable and looks the part.

the metabox is probably the superior machine and would have fewer quality issues i think given my experience with my inspiron (nightmare).

        • Well if you don't need portability - buy the one for inspiron gaming for $1519. It's $48 cheaper than the metabox deal and has a better graphics card :)

        • @Tech and cars:
Much better deal. Hadn't seen this one.

  • Hi, I'm looking for a new laptop for uni. Would this be better than a surface book? In terms of specs and power?
I'm looking at the older surface book with 16gb ram and 512gb ssd.
    Thanks.

    • +1

Perfect for uni. I like the look of the surface book but it is more for professional designers, and it costs more too. For $1840 this is an awesome deal and it is upgrade able over time - so it has good future proofing. Very portable and light for the specs it offers. Depends if you like having a touchscreen with stylus, in which case surface book or a 2 in 1 might be better for you. I don't need it and happy with a regular laptop.

      • Thanks for the response.

  • Cheers , bought one to finally replace my xps15 from 2012

  • Hopefully the delivery is not as long as eBay suggests "7 Mar-14 Mar". Dell website says ships in 2-3 days.
Also hope they can send the tax invoice fairly quickly, Powerbuy cashback ends 28 Feb.

    • I think they mean it takes 2-3 days for it to leave their warehouse, not 2-3 days to arrive

    • I ordered mine on in the last ebay sale on the 10th Feb. It has only just left the factory today (22/02/2017). That may give you some guidance.

      • Hi wongsun, do u get the invoice earlier within few days? Interested with the powerbuy cashback mentioned, which will end on Feb 28.

        • no invoice yet. See the below message from Dell

"Confirming you will receive a Tax Invoice from Dell Australia Pty Ltd with GST component. Invoices are sent by email around the time of delivery, either a few days before or after delivery, it can vary depending on model of laptop."

        • @wongsun:
Based on the above, i dont think it is possible to get invoice in time for powerbuy.

Thank u for your reply n confirmation.

        • @Smile2005: It is possible, I just reserved my cashback at Powerbuy. It gives you up to 30 days to claim it :).

    • Can someone explain how the Power buy rebate works in this case? Cheers.

  • thanks for the powerbuy mention. another bit of extra cashback!

    • However the cashback is for purchase from dell.com.au. will they exclude purchase from dell ebay?

      • Someone has posted that the invoice you receive does not mention ebay anywhere - so it is likely the same receipt as you would get purchasing from dell.com.au. Therefore, it should work. Also it is same factory and same vendor "Dell Australia", therefore receipts and processes are probably the same and, hopefully, we will be good for another $100 cashback.

  • anyone able to confirm when the invoice is issued or does it come with the item?

  • just confirmed from dell that they do not send invoices until the item has been received by the customer so forget about the powerbuy unless it's based on purchase date, not claim date.

    • +3

"Your Dell receipt must be submitted to us no more than 30 days after the receipt/invoice date."

You can reserve your cashback right now by logging into Powerbuy. It saves it for 30 days, so shouldn't have any issues. Just upload the invoice when you receive it.

  • +1

    Ended up getting this.

Thank you for the powerbuy tip. Extra $100 !!! Just have to keep reminding myself not to forget to reserve a claim.

    Great deal!

  • should I get this or Alienware 15 inch with GTX 1060 purely for gaming?

    • These two don't compare at all, neither on price or function. I don't think you can get Alienware 15 for $1800. (Alienware 15 GTX 1060 starting from $2,699.00).

Alienware would ofcourse be a better choice for pure gaming because of GTX 1060 and better cooling. A better comparison would be with GTX 1060 laptops from Futu eBay or the Metabox laptops someone mentioned in the comments above.

    • This is better for gaming - but bigger/heavier:

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/293407

      1519.20.

It has the GTX 1050 Ti which is better than the GTX 1050 that the XPS 15 (this deal) has.

  • I have received order acknowledgement, but when I track it on dell website at the top it says "The payment for your Dell Order is pending and hence your order is on temporary hold. Your order will be confirmed once we receive the payment."

I have paid this order in full and money has been taken from my account. Anyone else have this issue? Also delivery is expected for approx March 8. Pretty long wait, hopefully its a bit quicker.

    • i think payment to the seller is delayed due to paypal processing timeframes. clearing of funds etc etc. i suspect on your credit card it would show as a pending payment.

  • Does anybody know who the currier used by dell ebay ? Just asking to check if they deliver to Australia parcel lockers. Sent a message to dell ebay, did not get a response

    • i was told to provide a physical address as they do not send to parcel lockers.

  • Anyone receive cash rewards tracking receipt yet?

  • Had to jump on this deal, need an upgrade so bad!! Thanks OP!!!

  • My partner is in her final year of civil/enviro engineering and her mac just died.. She said she needs a laptop to run some programs (one is GIS - Geographic Information Systems). Not too sure what else, but before I take the plunge, would this laptop be suitable? She's not worried about battery life as she has power wherever she needs to take it.

I'm assuming the GTX 1050 should be more than enough for it (and any other programs she may need to use?) but thought I'd double check. :)

    • +1

Definitely would be more than enough. The i7 HQ CPU + the GTX 1050 is plenty of power.

For a CAD machine - you could probably even get away with this :

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/294317

      • Thanks mate. She likes the look of the Dell better so I think we'll end up going that way.

Any idea if it would be suitable to hook up to a Full HD or 4K monitor for home use?

Edit: also reading the description it says it has a GTX 1050 4GB GDDR5.. the Nvidia website says the GTX 1050 is a 2GB GDDR5.. only the 1050Ti has 4GB…

        • +1

The dell can definitely hook up to a 4K monitor and Full HD monitor. Has more than enough grunt to do that well.

Don't worry yourself between 2gb and 4gb… It's a 1050 series card, it will be very powerful and easily run modern programs for the next 3-5 years with ease.

        • @Tech and cars:

Thanks again mate. Will take the plunge! :)

  • Would like to ask if anyone know how to add 1tb hdd storage into this machine? Do we need to buy special parts from Dell?

I googled but could not find firm answer..
    Thanks

    • This is the only model which allows you to install an extra HDD (due to smaller battery). I think there is a cage already in there, so it shouldn't be too hard. With the 9550 many people were swapping their larger battery for the smaller one + cage. It is a handy feature if you can work with 4-5 hours battery life rather than 7 hours or so, which the larger battery 4K gets.

      • +1

Thanks nubzy, but read somewhere we need to buy special cable to connect hdd to the motherboard. Interested to know anyone install the hdd after they get their hands on this xps.

        • I am very curious too. From my research, people used a special connector called "XDYGX" on their xps 15 9550(previous model). However, there is no info about the 9560 yet.

        • Happy to do a trade with one of you if you want a smaller battery + HDD cage in exchange for the larger battery that comes with the 4k screen

  • I ordered this on Friday, now for the long wait … at the time of ordering delivery date was march 17th. Did anybody got notice of posting. I think dell may be shipping in bulk to oz, then post it from here

    • mine has been changed to 'shipped' on eBay

      • Yes, mine also changed to shipped today morning in ebay , but the actual dell tracking page says "work in progress ", the next step in the dell website is "manufacturing build complete". I am guessing they are still building the machine 😄

        • Same. I sure hope not :(

  • Anybody with the 4k screen want to do a trade for the smaller battery with the extra hard drive cage?

  • my dell tracking showed 'in transit' a few days ago, still hasn't changed status

  • i think all who've purchased are keen to get their orders but i dont see the value of posting the status of your individual order and speculating how dell's order fulfilment and logistics are set up.

  • Just checked now, still my order is "work in progress", it been a week now since I ordered, guess that deadline of 15th may is going to slip .😞

  • +3

Mine arrived today! It looks and feels really good!

    • +1

mine also arrived today, are you having any wireless issues? can hardly browse web without it dropping out, this killer wifi card is terrible.

All other laptops in house work fine

      • I've used it on my home WiFi network and also my uni WiFi network, both have worked fine without any issues for me.
Have a look at this: https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/5unlmb/got_my_brand_n…
It has a few common issues with this laptop (including the wireless issue) and how to fix them.
        Hope that helps!

        • thanks, it seems to be working fine now. Already escalated it to dell and asked them to install intel 8265 card, might cancel the request.

i also had integrated graphics stuttering issue, your link seems to have fixed that issue, cheers

Would have been nice if dell could get it 100% right before shipping, like apple manage to do

  • so far so good with mine. please so far. have had to order a connector to install a secondary hdd though. was only $16 but was expecting it to have been supplied

    • could you pm me link to connector

      • i bought this one…

        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/182211437743

will report back if it works. i assume it's the correct one as the 9550 should work.

        • which hdd did you end up purchasing? don't have much space left after installing doom and witcher 3

        • Yes, I can confirm that ebay cable works, because I already bought it. I got my machine today and added a 480gb ssd using the above cable. Also added a one 16gb ddr4, now it has 20gb ram (yes, for those wondering I got 2 x 4gb sodimm sticks in the original machine). But was very dissapointed that the pcie ssd was a Toshiba (was expecting a sumsung pro). Otherwise a good machine

        • @Kewjonson:

are you guys removing the original ssd or just adding a second ssd?

        • @sct911: I added a ssd instead of a hard disk. So many SSD (STATA) was lying around.

        • @Kewjonson:

thanks. can't wait to get my cable and install my 1TB SSD sandisk.
also disappointed it's 2x4gb config as i was advised by the ebay store it was 1x8gb.
          notice much difference with 20gb?

        • @Kewjonson:

did you also buy the grommet rubber rails or just the cable?

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Dell-XPS-15-9550-Precision-55…

        • @sct911: no I did not. The ssd is too thin in height to fit exactly in the carriage. But if u r putting a hdd then it might be ok. Best is to open the laptop and see if your hdd properly fits the carriage

        • @misguided_will: I use the machine for coding, so lot of applications run in parallel. I did realy notice performance improvement after I added the 16gb

  • Got mine today and about a third of my screen is lighter than the rest. Looks like a problem with the monitor cause when I link it to my tv via HDMI the display on the TV appears fine. Pretty disappointed, but crap happens. Dell support was pretty good to deal with and for everyone's information, we all get their 'pro-support' which means you get to talk directly with an Australian representative.

    • +1

sorry to hear. you must be unlucky as mine is perfect so far.
i had a bad experience with my inspiron and rolled the dice with my second dell.
      hope it all gets resolved.
