From an hour ago. Fire seems to have been blown further away now. Finger crossed that the wind direction is not going to change & the bushfire will be put out soon.

    Fire Sale???

  • At this rate there'll be no deals left when I'm shopping for one in March! :(

I'm hoping that Tightarse can bring back the T460S deal for $1000, but just wondering what people think of this one in comparison? All I know is that it is not as good build quality. I'm out of touch with the specs these days. I want a good laptop to last me 5+ years, mostly just for basic tasks like word/photo editing etc. I know I can't game at all on the T460S, but maybe a little bit is possible on this one? Which laptop would you guys choose out of these two??

I bought one for my son during the Christmas sale, and the cashback is also a sweetener.
Yes it's big, but it's also FHD (1080p) so looks very nice.
Inside you can fit another drive, and if you want to go all the way, take out the DVD drive and put in another drive in the caddy.
I didn't see any issues with the build quality, except no docking connector, but how many home users buy a dock ?
My son also uses it for gaming when not using his desktop, and it seems to run fine, plays things like starcraft, Ark survival, overwatch.
T460 is smaller so better in a corporate environment where people are taking to meetings all the time.

Touch screen would have been nice not for the touch interface, but because touch screens have glass not plastic displays so are easier to clean.

Stay safe scotty. I am watching from 15 minutes inland from it.

Don't want this one to burn a hole in your wallet!

  • Recently bought Acer Aspire F5-573G-73BD i7(6th Gen)/16GB/940MX(Dedicated 4gb VRAM)/1TB HDD, NO BACK LIGHT KEYBOARD for $1031 with 3 year Concierge Gold Warranty. Now I wanted to get E570.
Any Ideas to return it back? TGG's policy wasn't as flexible as JB's to get the money back
    :(an

You made a decision and now you have to live with it. I can't imagine anyone in 2017 buying a laptop with a mechanical hard disk as the main storage option.

You computer is still fine. It will run Windows just as terribly as all the other machines out there (ducks for cover from the flame throwers).

      • +1

As of my knowledge, there is an extra empty slot in Acer F5-573Gs for m2.SSD
I was thinking to add m2.ssd for couple of 100s but worried about the warranty(3 years) which really matters. There are no seals on the flap which we remove to install SSD.
Not sure if I can open it !!!! Any idea?

        • +7

Sure. Go for it. I don't know you so it should all be good. Generally adding user installable parts like this should be just fine. It's not like you are talking about Apple, which actively discourages you from upgrading their machines (yes it's not really yours unless you can do what you want to it). I booted into Windows to make this comment so Siri couldn't see it.

      • Yeah man

    • Ummm yeah nah mate

  • Nice segue.

    For anyone that's curious:

Price is $1699 before applying the discount code.

  • One might say this is a burning hot deal!

    • Too hot to handle.

  • -7

Wow next we'll see terrorists in Syria posting claiming that prices have 'bombed'.

I will probably get flamed for this but FHD is IMO the sweet spot, higher than this and I have to get windows to scale things up so I don't feel like I get any more desktop space. Granted the res is higher but trading off battery power isnt worth it.

Considering every other component in here is just about top spec I don't see why people happy with the form factor would pay more than this for a machine

  • How is the graphic card in this laptop? Can it play games reasonably well with mid setting?

  • +3

Aren't these always the same deal but a little cheaper?
How are these Lenovo deals classified as bargains?
Incremental savings are just annoying, IMHO.

    • +3

Actually, no. These deals are actually pretty dang good. The only other brand that have prices like these are Acer Aspires.

The T460 deal was ridiculously good but ain't coming back till end of next year.

      • +3

That deal was for T460S, and I have asked Tightarse who is having a meeting with Lenovo next week and will see whether it is possible to repeat that deal.

I am wondering whether I should just bite the bullet and get this one. I am a little worried about the weight and long term durability, but the specs seem very good. I don't want something heavy which is awkward to travel with. But I like the idea of being able to do some casual gaming or run some more intensive apps if I ever decide to use them in future. But the T460S, whilst older and lower specs, has a great build quality and slim design, so hard to decide :\

        • +1

If size and weight is a concern then I wouldn't buy this one. 15.6" and 2.3kg.

        • +1

@Yuri Lowell: I'd probably be using it at home 90% of the time. But I still think the slim profile and light weight of T460S would be appreciated. It just a little dissapointing how much better these specs are, and it is a recent model laptop compared to T460S being a year old. I guess you are paying for the build quality of the T460S and not specs. My current laptop is 2.8kg and 16" and I did take it out every now and then but it was a little heavy and cumbersome to lug around. I think I will hold out for the T460S deal to come back.

        • T460 in other countries came with a delicated GPU.
Perhaps this is coming soon to AU/NZ.

        • @wjb: would be good but then again probably not $1000. I don't even know that I need a graphics card. Photo editing is not that intensive and I think handled by the CPU more than anything else.

        • @wjb: the Dgpu was something really low end, like 930 or something.

Dont you find Levono laptop screens look washed-out? MY friend recently bought a high end Lenovo laptop but I do not like its screen.

    • can anyone comment on the clarity and viewing angles of this specific laptop's panel?
It seems to have - 15.6" FHD(1920x1080) IPS LED Blacklight AntiGlare Black

      • Received mine today and it looks absolutely fantastic. As good as my Dell U2312HM desktop monitor. Viewing angles are excellent and I see no washing out that you mentioned. Only problem is there's about 3cm of backlight bleed in the bottom left corner when it's on a dark screen. Also it's matte so I can't notice any screen glare however I only used it at night so far.

    Flee! Fleeeeeee for your livesss!

  • How much would it cost to have this shipped to NZ from a friend?

  • +4

Well Lenovo obviously do not want my money or to make a sale. I have spent all morning trying to buy this computer and a wireless mouse.
Got some refusals to accept the code and discount on the Lenovo website then a maintenance page which is hard to believe (Do they stop the site for road diggers or something?)

Now all I get is this message at checkout:

"Authorization has failed. Please contact your credit card provider."

Rang CC provider and no problem at their end plenty of funds and no blockage but a $1 figure went through about 2 pm today which is often a verification method once you have signed up as I did today. Lenovo had forgotten I had bought an E520 from them before.

Then I got the run around push button phone relay with recorded messages telling me how great their sales team is. Left message and still no call back.

Is there nobody in the entire profitable organisation that can speak and understand clearly and just pop an order through by phone? (Rhetorical question obviously there is nobody there. It seems like it is being run by two guys on drugs in a warehouse in the outer Hebrides. Ok RANT OVER. I will wait to see if they call back.

    • I got the same issue when removing the item from the 'cart', I was only able to replicate it once. I was redirected to some maintenance page with a picture of an oriental gentleman on a grinder, or something. To be honest, I can't remember.

I think I'll wait until Monday. How did you go?

More interested in the cheapest 970m

This gpu is already severely outdated

Had a 740m a few years ago.. Did bare minimum for its day and overheating meant i had to turn it off every now and then

Especially in this weather.. Unless you got 24/7 a/c shits going to be bad

    • 950m is considerably better than a 740m. Around 3 times better in fact. If you want more than that though I'd be looking at a 1060 as it's a fully fledged 1060 (only slightly lower clocks) rather than a mobile version and will blow away the 970m. They are typically in 2k+ laptops though.

  • Where are the quad core bargains…..?

  • Thanks OP. It looks like I found a uni laptop for the SO that can handle the odd indie game.

    Legend.

    • Not good for uni if you pln to carry it around. It's heavy and quite large. For uni an ultra book like T460S or Dell XPS13 is better. But if it's just going to stay home most of the time then yeah it is a great deal.

      • Yeah, it will stay home most of the time. If the T460S deal mentioned above was still on, I'd definitely get it. I was advised that as long as it wasn't heavy like my Acer Predator G9-591-72LV, it would be fine. I think it is about 3.5kg, pretty chunky.

        • Without a HDD it doesn't feel that heavy really. Feels less than 2.3kg.

        • @Yuri Lowell: Can you describe the laptop's operating noise level generated under 'normal' usage conditions. I.e. light load and low/moderate temps, is cooling fan audible/noticeable? Does it kick in frequently or truly passive cooling employed (as reviews suggest)?

Looking at buying the E570 as a possible remedy to the annoyingly constant and unnecessary cooling fan noise of an ideapad bought recently.

        • @bigguy7: I can't hear it at all when I'm just doing light activities like browsing the internet and using Word. In fact I don't think the fan is even on, at least I can't hear it with my ear against the system so it must be passively cooled depending on your work load. It does get a bit hotter on my lap compared to my other laptop (Acer Aspire).
