Decent entry level upscaling Bluray player. Is that a good price? Shopbot shows lowest as $220.

Is a decent machine, is an older model though.
Newer models will have better performance faster load times and more features for an extra $40 or so.I bought one over a year ago and can recommend it especially at this price. It's a basic but capable player and can easily be changed to multi-region DVD via the remote control.
I was going to post this earlier this morning but got distracted at work. I think it is a fantastic deal for those who don't already have a blu ray player. Beats majority of other sellers by around $100
will these play dvds as well?
Normally does.
Yes plays DVD's, that's what the upscaling is for. Makes them look prettier.
Some reviews claim to the upscaling is pretty good but not the'best' - because it only takes it to 1080-60 - there can be some judder on slow panning shots - but apparently you can user adjust to compensate
saw a decent looking one at jbhifi the other day, 100 bux, with a USB port…no named brand though. may have been a soniq…
They're branded as Soniq which I think, is JB Hi-Fi's own bottom-of-the-range branding.

why not buy a PS3 :)
cause there is an issue of a few more hundred dollars and not everyone wants a game machine?
I'm still waiting to see this stupid comment on a toaster or something similar…
Can get current Panasonic BD-45 model for about $170 if you go to JB. Last time I was there they had a Sony for $188 too.
The Soniq for sub $100 has gotten decent reviews as well.
"Full HD" Bluray…
Apparently it does youtube and mkv files.
Might be better value than the sub-$100 models. Though I prefer to buy locally, for easier warranty claim.http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/122…
Ive got the P1500. Basic and good quality - but does take a while to load. The internet connection is not worth the effort. Samsung will charge $80 for a wireless dongle but there is very little content.
Watch out for warranty. I got a free Samsung Home theatre Blueray unit with a TV which is already back in for repair (wont output to anything other than HDMI and stopped receiving signals from the remote). The unit is decent, but discontinued. Newer models are usually improving start up times, also the newer Samsung has a new menu UI (similar to the ones on their TVs when you play off USB). Other alternatives are Pana DMPBD45 (RRP $199) and the replacement model, Samsung BDC5500 (RRP $229). Stores are running 15-20% off RRP every now and then.
One catch about the DMPBD45 is now component output - just composite and HDMI.
The sweet thing about the BDP1600 though is from memory, it included a HDMI cable in the box, which the new ones do not.
can anybody comment on quality? im keen to upgrade my ancient dvd player
