Thanks mate, these are good to stock up on (if you're a high horse sitting vego like me) whenever they are on sale. The mince isn't bad, and the pieces are OK in stir fries too.

  • What is their problem with Soy?

I dunno, but I avoid it because it can mess with your hormones.

They are just trying to tap into a market differentiation because they use myco (fungal) protein rather than soy protein. Anyway, your choice.

Not saying they're right or wrong, but this article summarises the concerns. I personally avoid soy where possible.

    • Soy allergy is pretty common, though it usually takes a hell of a lot of soy to elicit anaphylactic shock or similarly extreme reactions. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soy_allergy

Additionally, almost unimaginably huge amounts of the Amazon and other rainforests have been cleared to make room for soy farming, so that is another reason to avoid it.

      • Always thought that most soy production goes to livestock and not humans. But okay since that isn't the case and you sound like you know what ya talking about I'll start eating meat again and forget about soy products.

        • A bit late, but you are correct - most soy production goes to livestock. I didn't say anything about what it is used for… By purchasing soy products meant for human consumption, it drives up the demand for soy in general, which is not good for the environment when farmed as it is in Brazil and other areas. Eat meat if you want, but do so with the knowledge that it does contribute to deforestation and the destruction of our planet.

        • Well aware of what you stated and it is a spurious argument or very confused.

If soy production was based solely on human consumption the US could easily fill world demand many times over.

If you stated the majority of farming practices since the "green revolution" are environmentally disastrous I'd just agree with you and get on with my day.

But blaming amazon deforestation on people who consume soy products is an amazing feat of mental gymnastics. Much like the good old days of hemp is evil since its a variety of cannabis.

Note that many (most? all?) Quorn products contain egg whites and thus are not vegan.

And not suitable for strict(er) vegetarians that also avoid products that have ingredients with egg/gelatine/rennet.

  • Oooh I love their Frozen Meat Free Soy Free Schnitzels, not even a vegetarian but they taste great :D

    • Their southern style crispy patty things are really good, too. An excellent substitute for a chicken burger. And their quarter pound burgers are almost indistinguishable from hamburger patties.

    they use myco (fungal) protein

"Frozen Meat Free Soy Free Chicken Style Mushroom Pastries" are fancy mushroom pastries.

  • Frozen Meat Free Soy Free Fillets - bought and tried, not the best choice

  • maybe a good price but..

I ate some of this when my daughter went through a vego stage. I found it very 'American', super highly processed, looks the deal but the taste & texture were disappointing.

After I read up how it's made, I couldn't eat it any more.
