  • Bought one prior to Christmas from Amazon De for ~$550au. Great unit. Does all I want for the lounge room. Plug is super easy to change if your confident with a soldering iron, it just unclips from the power supply inside the unit.

Atmos is great but hard to find a decent dub, best so far is Mad Max.

  • Bought, thanks. I wonder how I can hide a 2nd sub???

  • that's cheap! :)

  • Great price, paid almost the same a few months ago for the VSX-930!

    • Is there lot of difference between this one and the vsx-930?

  • So tempted

  • +3

Bought 1 to replace my onkyo, which is having HDMI flickering issues.

    • +2

Seriously considering doing the same. I bought an Onkyo TX-NR646 from JB Hi-fi last year and am constantly losing HDMI sync with about half of my devices. Turning the (LG) TV off and on again usually fixes it, but it's a pain, and shouldn't happen with a $1K. It's weird; my set top box and PS4 work every time, but PS3, Xbox 360 + One takes a few goes. I also have an Alienware Alpha R2 plugged in which works 80% of the time, but occasionally requires a TV power-cycle to work. I occasionally also get weird HDMI static that requires a full power-cycle of the Onkyo and TV to fix.

The only problem is that the Onkyo has 8 x HDMI-IN and I'm using every single one of them. This only has 7 x HDMI-IN, so I might have to rethink what gets plugged in. :)

      • +1

I got a solution, give me your Ps4!

      • Tried shorter cables?

      • +2

Sometimes a poor quality hdmi cables can lead to flickering and dropouts. I have the same Onkyo and had major issues with dropouts for the first month, once every 5-10 mins it would drop out.

Finally traced it down to a poor quality hdmi cable in the mix.

Replaced it and have had no issues for 12 months. No dropouts at all, perfect.

        • Thanks heaps, I followed your lead. It turns out my amp is still good. Throw away the bad cable, everything works fine.
Now I need to contact amazon to cancel the transaction.

        • @H_J: Nice, glad to hear!

The Denon X2300W is $698 (€496) with standard delivery at Amazon Germany
    https://www.amazon.de/dp/B01GQ85GLW

    • Damn, I just paid 1300 for the x2300w locally.

      • Don't be too disappointed. Normally, when these type of units bought from OS, will not be warranted in Australia if there is an issue.

        • Yeah, but generally you get DoA cover with Amazon. Generally it's fine, I bought a pioneer vsx 920 from the US many years ago and it's still going strong. Although I have had to use a step down transformer.

        • @DangerNoodle: OK, i didn't know about DoA cover. But I would assume you have to pay for postage back to US? Btw, the Pioneer VSX 521/921/1021 were problematic hence luckily you missed out with the 2010 VSX920. In my view, you lose power using step down transformers however you save heaps by buying it OS. Cheers

        • @vinni9284: looks like I lucked out then! It was my first receiver but it's still going strong with my step dad.

  • Wow, great price. But so is the Denon price above. Denon worth the $119 more? I've always liked Denons, got an AVR-1803 that's been chugging along for over 15yrs but really need to upgrade for more HMI ports, my projector only has two. Plus Atmos etc

    • Had Denons lately and they definitely aren't built like they were, mind you they all aren't. Had it repaired within 6 months, nothing worked, minimal use too.

    • Yeah got a similar unit, X___ range and can confirm, they still got a buggy firmware! Random dropouts, etc. Go with Denon for high end units, the budget ones seem buggy. My Yamaha units work flawlessly, but it's a lot more expensive.

      • +1

Denon and Pioneer receivers are just about identical internally. They will sound exactly the same.

They're both designed and manufactured by Inkel.

        Buy based on features.

    • Thanks for the replies, certainly good to know that a new Denon is on par with this Pioneer at this level. Makes the decision slightly easier.

    • +1

It really is a matter of preference. I've had a pioneer vsx 920, a Sony Es2000 and currently using a denon x2300w. Personally I prefer the Sony and denon sound.

My main reason for choosing the denon x2300w (although I paid twice as much as the previous post sad face) is because all ports support hdmi 2.0 and hdcp2.2 whereas some other receivers will have 8 hdmi ports but only 4 with hdcp2.2. I refunded the Sony because even though it advertised 4k on all ports, it only had one hdcp2.2. Port and it only supported 4k30 (the cable used was the one that came with my shield TV which runs 4k60 fine on my denon). If you look on the pioneer website, this receiver only has 3x hdcp2.2 ports which is something to keep in mind if you're after something future proof for 4k media.

  • What's the warranty like?

I also bought the 930 a few months ago from kogan. How much do you think I can sell it now?

Correct me if I'm wrong but this goes up to 7.2.2 whereas the 930 only went up to 5.2.1 (the 2 is height speakers)?

    • 5.2.1 is typical atmos, 7.2.2 is probably overkill, you could use those extra channels in another room most likely though.

    • I think if it is 7.2 receiver, it only goes maximum atmos configurations of 5.2.2 (last 2 is atmos height speaker)
If you want to go for 7.2.2 or 5.2.4, you need to find 9.2 receiver

I have just been through the process of getting a moto G4 replaced under warranty through amazon UK and the experience was as good as can be. It was a known issue so that may have helped but basically went on live chat, told them the issue and they resent a new one straight away, I have to return the old one but they will reimburse shipping costs and give you 30 days to do it so I wasn't without a phone at all.

  • +1

Ordered ours on January 25 while out of stock, shipped on January 30 and arrived in Melbourne on February 2, amazing shipping speed.

We set the receiver up last night and it is very good, I am coming from an ageing high end Yamaha receiver (Yamaha RX-A3000) and this receiver is certainly good enough. The remote is awful though, glad I have a Harmony.

We upgraded to get 4K pass through support and this is a great bang for the buck solution.

  • I have a 5.1 Yamaha system which I wish to upgrade. But I only got 5 speakers + subwoofer….

How do I go about getting extra 2 speakers for this Receiver? Would be nice to know the connectors at the back to find out whether existing setup can be plugged in straight to it

    • Yes, you can plug 5.1 setup in any 7.1 or 7.2 or 9.2 setup.

      • Oh I see so I can just plug straight in, they are the wire ones like banana, positive and negative for the speakers.

        • I would say yes. Most receivers can take banana or wires straight. You will be able to put speakers based on their locations. Normally it is like:
          Centre
          Front left
          Front right
          Sub
          Surround left
          Surround Right

          Surround back/Ceiling left or
          Surround back/ceiling right.
*** If receiver supports zone 2 ,these surround backs can be used for zone 2 left and right speakers

Ceiling one are for Atmost effect.
          Hope that helps.

    • +1

The Amazon page has a quite good picture of the back, showing that all channels have binding posts (with banana plug sockets).
If your existing speakers have some kind of special plug to fit in your current system, at worst you can just cut it off.

      • I see but can you recommend some wireless speakers for this unit? Pioneer ones

    • I got the yamaha one with active sub, how that going to fit into this?

  • Wow. That is a great price taken the feature this beast has. Wonder my Yamaha which costed almost 3 times is 3 times superior (Rx-1079) as features are almost similar.

  • This looks like a good review for the unit.

    http://hdgear.highdefdigest.com/37755/pioneervsx113172channe…

  • Awesome thanks! Just got one

  • Works with Multi Room Streaming. So tempted…

    http://www.googlecastblog.com/wireless-multi-room-and-google…

Edit: Hmmm actually it says it's supported via "FireConnect technology"… so no solid word on Chromecast Audio Multi Room support…

  • Thanks pulled the trigger

  • +4

Ha, gotta love the specs on modern Receivers… no-one seems to give a crap about actual sound quality anymore! The Pioneer Spec sheet says "160 W/ch (6 ohms, 1 kHz, THD 1.0 %, 1ch Driven)" which is ridiculous as it in no way relates to the way anyone would ever use the Amp. I can't find any info on realistic power levels at realistic use. Maybe someone else knows? 160W is just crazy high but of course it can only produce that at a single frequency through ONE channel… I'd like to know what this thing can do at more realistic power levels and I'm not sure why they don't release those specs. Most people wouldn't ever need anything over about 50W assuming it's pure clean power so what THD does this Amp produce at that power level? I suppose we'll never know :(

Apart from that, this does look like a pretty decent beast of a Receiver for the price! Soooo tempted. Nice to see Pioneer including Phono inputs now too! Probably just a cheap & nasty $5 pre-amp inside… but still.

    • +1

You will probably never will find out correct power levels unless you own a CRO and can test. There is no standardisation of power so they can waffle figures. Don't forget it is 160W @ 6 Ohms. Many current speakers are 8 Ohms hence can be around 90W. This is a great receiver for everyday purpose and speakers. When you start to get powerful speakers that require a lot of current, this unit will struggle to power it. The only negative is that there are no preouts for external amps if that was the case. But for that price, it's very good. Cheers

      • Ah good pickup, I was considering it as I have a 1019 but the lack of pre-outs is a deal breaker in my case, I want to move to power amps eventually.

        • I would say that an amp with pre outs are the way to go. The good thing about it is that you can flip the amp easier when a new encoding standard / HDMI version is released hence the unit is basically obsolete with new media types. Many ppl get caught up with believing they can obtain extra channels using a combination of pre outs with the internal amps. If the unit is powered by 7.2 channels and have the same equivalent pre outs, that's all you can get, either 7.2 external or internal amps for each channel, not 9.2 channel using its internal 7.2 amp coupled with external amp/pre out 2 channel. Furthermore, these $3K pre-processors tend to go for peanuts when this happens hence another reason for the integrated/pre-outs. I'm sure audiophiles will argue with my comment :-). Sorry, a little off topic ……… Cheers

      • Any idea if this amp will drive 4 ohm front left/right speakers? My Krix Lyrics Gold's are 4 ohm: "Maximum 150 watts RMS amplifier power into 4 ohms"

        • No chance! I wouldn't risk it. Usually, these newer receivers will drive 6 Ohm+ speakers. I would invest in a proper dedicated power amp, or if you like the Pioneer, you need the LX series to drive the Krix as they are decent speakers. This unit is good all rounder entry level. Cheers

        • @vinni9284:
Thanks for that. Looks like the Denon is the go as it can handle 4 ohms, even if not the calibre of what the Krix deserve.

      • FYI the Denon mentioned above states more realistic figures:
        Power Output (8 ohm, 20 Hz - 20 kHz, 0.08% 2ch Drive) 95 W

        Power Output (6 ohm, 1 kHz, 0.7% 2ch Drive) 125 W

  • +1

Wow.. cheap as chips. They've come down in price so much! The Denon with similar specs was $1300 over a year ago.
edit: nevermind, aussie retailers are still flogging this off for over $1k+

  • 1 left… hurry!

  • Does anyone know which region this stock is?
The code should be something like WMP or WMB or WMA

This is very important because according to pioneer tech support in Australia who I just spoke to, the WMB has many issues

  • Thanks OP, bought 1. It said there were only 4 left in stock before I pulled the trigger FYI…

  • I got the last one, let's hope it's not the WMB!

  • ozbargained

  • Strange, when i got through the checkout, the price dropped to GBP 290.

    Order Summary
    Item(s) Subtotal: £290.83
    Postage & Packing: £59.86
    Total Before VAT: £350.69
    VAT: £0.00
    Total: £350.69
    Grand Total: £350.69

    That is only $AUD 438
    Not complaining mind you…

    • 350 pound doesn't equal 438?

      • SOrry you're absolutely right. I was thinking in USD.

        • Ohhh ha ha…. i was thinking I wish it was at that price!

  • I missed it. Damn

  • Now when i refresh the page, stock is not listed, but what worries me is that the next line says "This seller does not deliver to Australia"
I hope they don't reneg on this deal.

    • +1

It's a different seller now, stock that sold out was from Amazon EU S.a.r.L. Go and have some lunch after your currency on as well!

  • -1

Doesn't deliver to Australia now. So I missed out

    • Different seller.. U can still select the other seller just a 1 month wait.

      • It's long wait lol 2 months actually. How do you find out the exact postage cost? It doesn't show

The other seller definately sells the same unit with correct voltage?

The only seller that ships to AU is Amazon.UK

        • Yeah seems like the other seller is not there anymore.

The Denon looks the good also. Gets a better review from the one site.

        • And the £351 becomes $604.04 AUD

  • It seems that it doesn't ship to Australia now.
Maybe someone changed the shipping policy.

  • Here is an alternative: Got this Yamaha from Amazon.fr and it is amazing.

    • How do you translate the page?

      • Use Chrome and its translate option on top of the page.

  • 59 pounds for shipping from Amazon themselves.

    • Guys this Pioneer or the Yamaha here:

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/287097

      • I'd say Pioneer: 2 HDMI outs , more ins, wifi, Bluetooth, atmos, black color.

        • Whilst the pioneer has more hdmi inputs, the Yamaha actually has one more hdcp2.2 certified port compared to the pioneer, which may be better for some people depending on their 4k media requirements.

        • @DangerNoodle: good point with HDCP 2.2 . Both have 4K/ 60p , Bluetooth , Atmos and DTS:X . I don't use network radio , wifi is used rear for updates and can be used thru the cable. however Yamaha has just 1 HDMI out. It seems has a bit less power 145 vs 160 (which is arguable). Yamaha has nicer / better remote control. Pioneer looks better IMO. Some folks reckon Yummies sound better. I wish this Pioneer would be under $450AUD which would make my decision faster. I'm still tempting but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

        • @compugrid: generally power is misrepresented by a lot of receivers. I have a fairly small room so the denon x2300w has more than enough power for me, but the thing I liked about denon is that they quote power in more realistic terms, ie. Multichannel and not just single channel.

Will you be using the second hdmi port? I have one but find I don't really need it.

Receivers are very hard to shop for as the sound can change drastically depending on the receiver, settings and the speakers.

Yamaha currently have a deal where you can trade in an existing receiver for $500 off a new Yamaha receiver. Need to go to specific locations for it but it might be worth it if you have don't have any use for a second receiver.

  • I don't know. I think I prefer to just get a normal Pioneer without network connectivity and just use a separate Chromecast. Is the built in Chromecast even the Ultra (ie..4k)?

    • Support for Google Cast was promised as a firmware update but it still has not been provided.

A follow-up firmware update is planned to provide support for services such as Google Cast, TIDAL and Deezer.
Until then, these services will not be available.

    • Good point. In fact, I think that this one supports "chromecast for your music",, ie I don't think you can stream AV to the built in Chromecast. So its like a Chromecast audio. You would probably be better off using a regular chromecast plugged into an HDMI port.

  • Tempted to buy. Will it support a simple stereo (while I am looking for 5.1 speakers)?

    • Almost certainly.

  • I try to grab one but this item is not delivered to Sydney.

    • you can choose AMAZON as seller there, just have to wait one month longer as it's not in stock now

  • Can anyone recommend a good guide to home entertainment systems and what to get for entry level receiver speaker set up?

  • Got sucked in too, thanks OP!

TIme to replace my 7 yo crappy Onkyo TX-SR308.

    • I've got the SR508 but it's still working :(

      • I have TX-NR 515, which is advanced. What worries me is many complaints with Onkyo HDMI boards. So I am tempting. Would be also good to have what this Pioneer has: HDCP 2.2, 4K/ 60p , Bluetooth , Atmos , wifi, and DTS:X. Wouldn't you want to have all of these goodies?

  • Hi,

Do I need to get this unit or receiver if I am using sound bar plus Sub woofer ?

    • +1

Not if you're happy with the sound bar. You don't need a receiver and a sound bar.

  • +1

Well that was the most civilised discussion of a piece of tech I've read in ages.

    Well done.

  • Thanks OP, I bought 2, with 1 to replace my Pioneer VSX930 per the deal I posted last year; https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/261036
and the other to replace my pioneer VSX529.

    • Anyone received Amp from Amazon UK?

      • Nope still waiting to be dispatched. I don't expect to see it for several weeks. If I remember right my Credit card hasn't had the cost taken from it either. I think they wait to get the units before the bill the card.

        • I got both of mine on the 9th Feb after ordering on the 3rd Feb.

        • @dandandan:

I'm guessing you got in before the original seller sold out. I'm stuck in the 1-2 month waiting time.

  • Got mine today !!!!!!!
