Pioneer VSX930 7.2 Channel AV Receiver with Dolby Atmos, 4K Upscaling, Wi-Fi & Bluetooth $559.20 Posted @ DickSmith / Kogan eBay

560
C20DS

I purchased this Pioneer VSX930 receiver in the last Kogan 20% of eBay deal in June, so it went from $864 t0 $691.20 after the 20% off. It's now $559.20. The VSX930 is apprently the same as the VSX1130, except the front panel on the VSX1130 is metal casing against the VSX930 which is plastic. It has some decent reviews and I have it setup running great. The main reason I upgraded was to have the dual HDMI outputs.

Cheapest other prices I can find;

VSX930: Kogan has for $699 or $849 here, http://www.excelhifi.com.au/vsx-930-k-home-theatre-amp-7.2-b…
VSX1130: $989 https://www.rio.com.au/product/pioneer-vsx-1130-dolby-atmos-…

  • Note these are now the old models. Looks like 831 and 1131 just came out with some somewhat significant upgrades.

It's called scaling. There's no such thing as "upscaling".

    • Upscaling, by definition, is to improve something (quality, value, etc). In this case it's improving 1080 to 4k resolution. I expect the term is valid.

      • +1

Lol. That's the point. It's not improving anything

        • +5

I get the point. Scaling means to change the scale, i.e. make larger or smaller.

However, since there are two options, up or down, it seems useful to indicate which way. Hence "upscaling". Makes sense to me to be more specific rather than "correct" but lack detail.

    • +3

Scaling could mean up or down. Upscaling refers specifically to scaling up.

    • +1

      Of course there is.

  • Does this come with AU plug OP?

    • +2

Mine came with an AU plug

      • Does it do a on screen overlay to display volume? I have my av gear in cupboard so it would be handy to see what the volume level is without being able to see the amplifier.

        • I'm interested in knowing this also.
Might be upgrading my system in the near future.

        • @Kangal:

Yes, receiver volume displays on screen.

  • Trying to understand if it supports two zones? That is, can I run the outdoor speakers through this HDZONE?

    • Yes, I run the second zone/HD Zone to the my outdoor deck speakers. I upgraded from the VSX 828, which also did this however this model support HDMI output to the second zone.

      • Awesome. Thanks! Is it just the speaker cables going straight into the receiver with banana plug or something?

        • +1

Yes, I have the speaker cables running into the receiver with banana plugs, you can also just put the speaker wires directly in as well.

        • @dandandan:

Sorry I'm a little confused, where did you connect the banana plugs in the receiver?

All I see is HDMI out for second zone

Edit, I think I get it, you're plugging them in the "Surround Back" which is for your 7.2 channel.
What if you're using all 7.2 channels?

  • Hey OP, any idea whether you can run a 4K TV and 1080p TV at the same time or do the res's need to match?

Edit: More specifically - a 4K TV and 1080P 3D projector if anyone knows..

    • +1

Yes it does becasue the second zone supports HDMI output. I assume you have the TV's in different rooms? My second zone is my deck TV and speakers so I can have something on the inside TV and output music through the receiver to the deck speakers. You can also output the HDMI input devices such as foxtel, DVD etc to the second zone.

      • +1

Interesting, can you select each Output as a primary or does it have to have Output 1 active at all times?

My setup is a 4K TV + 1080p projector, I basically wanna be able to switch between the outputs (using a harmony remote) on the fly if I need to.

        • Do you mean, have to have say HDMI zone one on at all times? if so the answer is no. You can just have the HD zone output on just play music in another zone, well that's what I do to my deck speakers. Have not tried this to my outdoor deck tv yet but assume it's the same.

        • +1

@dandandan: yeah wondering if I can just have output 2 only on for video to projector then if I want to watch on my tv, switch to output 1 only

    • Page 32 https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1033/3157/files/VSX-930-K_…

Its essentially a 7x2 HDMI matrix. Play same or different sources on the two outputs.

Ill be using it to drive a projector and a lcd

      • Yep checked the manual before purchasing! Cheers.

        • Does it support simultaneous 4K stream from different sources though HDMI Out 1 and HDMI Out 2? I'm confused by the manual. At a high level it seems like it is supported, however there's a section that says: The HDMI OUT 2 terminal does not output a 4K/60p 4:4:4 24 bit video image if main/hdzone is set to hdzone. Set main/hdzone to main or use the HDMI OUT 1 terminals.

        • @Punkboy:

No, because for it to run 2x2 (2 separate sources to 2 separate outputs) you have to set output 2 to HDZone

It will do 1x2 (1 4k60 4:4:4 source to 2 outputs) when it is in MAIN mode (ie. duplicate main output)

That's how I understand it anyway. You're going to have a really bad time finding a 4k/60 4:4:4 matrix for any reasonable price.

          Edit: 1x2 not 1x1

        • @XeKToReX:
Ok thanks. But it will support 4K and 1080p separate sources on HDMI Out 1 and HDMI Out 2 correct?

        • @Punkboy:

Don't quote me, but from what I've read, it appears so.

  • A couple questions:
    - Would this stream video nicely from a NAS? What video Codec can it handle without transcoding
    - Does it scale Standard Def to 1080P

    • I have not tried that, I have a Sony TV connected so If I want to stream from my synology and I do it through the TV. This receiver also support ARC so you can get Smart TV audio through the TV HDMI cable plugged into the receiver without having to use a separate optical cable.

  • dual HDMI outputs ? do they work at the same time to 2 monitors? do they work without the VSX930 power on? Does it pass through audio to the TV/monitor?
Tempting! But AtMoS Speakers seems to be $$$

    • You don't have to use the AtMos speakers though.

Why would you pass audio to the TV/monitor?

Do you mean can you have same image/source on the both monitors? not sure I'll have to try that.

The power has to be on for the receiver to work but you can turn zone 1 off and use zone 2

      • oh, need to power on~

the power off passthrough i sneeded, so that I can sometimes view my computer -> HDMI -> monitor via the amp without turning it on.
I think some of the yamaha can do that. I am using a 2X2 HDMI switcher for that at the moment.

  • OK, this deal looks tempting. Are there any comparable alternatives? I would like to get a feel of how good a deal this is. Plus what kind of speakers in what price range would be comparable? Sorry, I'm a bit of an audiophile novice

    • I am in the same boat as you. I was originally waiting for a good price to come up on the Denon x1200 but it seems that this is almost on par spec wise.

I am mostly wanting independent two-zone so that I can have music/sport playing on speakers in the alfresco and little fella can watch a movie in the theatre at the same time.

    • +2

I think the Sonys are generally regarded as the best at the moment.

      • Any particular model you are referencing at all?

  • Hi,

How do i get this for $559

Also, There is only 2 Feedback on that link on eBay, is that the proper, safe dse to buy from?

  • Does this have a 3.1 or 2.1 mode? I can't set up rear speakers at the moment but want to get a receiver for hdmi switching and to upgrade from a mid-end speaker bar.

    • yes, I have another receiver in another room with a centre and two speakers, all receivers should support that.

  • +2

Who the hell is dicksmithau as a seller on eBay? Feedback at 75%. 1 negative and 2 positive. Am I missing something here?

  • It's got Airplay. But how about streaming from within Google Play from Android? Bluetooth only or is there a fancier way?

  • Really need this but I just can't with a brand new ebayer.

    • Paypal?

    • It's dicksmith.com.au owned Kogan.

      • I know, just can't with them.

    • Hah, damn, finally made my mind up just to go back and 2 sold 2mins after I last looked 45mins ago!

        • Yeah, definitely need the Two HDMI out and 4K60 4:4:4 support, hopefully they get some from the "kogan ebay store" and put them back up.

Kicking myself pretty badly right now.

        • @xdreamyst:

I'm in the same boat, my Onkyo has been going strong but I just feel like I'm on the edge.

All good mate, enjoy! If it doesn't come back, always 10% off at the "DSE" website!

        • @xdreamyst:

Yeah, but it only happens once a month or so, seems more like a bug than a hardware failure at this point.

        • @xdreamyst:

I've read about the recall previously actually, its a TX-NR414. Purchased from HN a few years ago, wonder if I can find the receipt.

          Cheers!

        • @xdreamyst:

Back in stock so placed my order, thanks for the tips!

  • So spewing I missed out on this, been looking at upgrading my old VSX-826 for a while now and this was an excellent price.

thank you!!! i just bought one :)

        • Nice, enjoy!

      • Damn you. I was kind of glad it went out of stock so I wouldn't buy one. Jumped in on the second chance though. :P

Winner winner chicken dinner, just ordered. woot woot

  • Back in stock. Thank you OP, bought one.

  • Hi,
I still have the Yamaha (HTR-6065) – RX-V673 from the old deal, 2012 I think. Not used much, but now I want to setup new speakers. Would this be a good upgrade? So this can stream video too from NAS/PLEX etc? Can (HTR-6065) – RX-V673 do the stream 4k/1080P too? Other difference that I see is that (HTR-6065) – RX-V673 have only single hdmi out and no BT or wifi, just a network port.
Please help with your expert advise.
    Regards,

    • +1

I wouldn't rely on the receiver to do video streaming to be honest. A Roku, Nexus Player, Shield TV or something similar would be a better video player 99% of the time.

      As far as upgrading goes..

Do you have a 4K display?

If not, Do you plan on getting a 4K display soon?

      Do you have a 4K Bluray/Media Player?

Do you have a need for 2 HDMI Outputs?

      Do you need Dolby Atmos?

      Do you need WiFi?

      Do you need Bluetooth?

Your current receiver seems to support everything you'd really want in a 1080p receiver as it is. Really, unless you absolutely need WiFi and/or 4K support, I'd pass.

  • 1 Still left

    • and the last one just sold now.

  • Thanks XeKToReX,
Yeah ok, got NuC setup for streaming along with ATV4, missed on the shield in the recent deal, so will have to wait for another later.
    This Yamaha (HTR-6065) – RX-V673 that I have , do have 4k upscaling
    http://au.yamaha.com/en/products/audio-visual/av-receivers-a…
4K pass-through and upscaling for next-generation high resolution images
Not sure, if we are not streaming video with it, then what 4k upscaling is good for?
I do not have a 4k tv, YET, planning to purchase it before the end of the year.
No 4K blueray/media play, YET !, planing to get shield before the end of the year.
Do I need 2 HDMI outs, hmmmmm, I have not even been using the single output for a couple of years now , so maaaayyyyyy be not.
Do I need Dolby Atmos ! its good for only BR disks right? but most of the movies that I/anyone have just DD on MKV, isnt it? So what else Atmos is used
Wifi, hmm i have it sitting in the entertainment unit along with modem, router etc, so may be not again.
Bluetooth! what would it be good for that i cannot already do with network cable connected ?
So pass? But impulse is telling me to get it. I can probably give mine to my brother in law for about 300-400, still, ahhhaa

    • did you end up getting the last one?

  • Nope, considering the difference, I couldn't decide, and I am not upset, Strange ! Am I sick, whats wrong with me.

    • you asked way too many questions on Ozbargain… the big picture was: your brother in law would have scored your Yamaha for a good price and he would have been happy, and you would have picked up an upgrade for a small changeover making you happy! Win - Win.

      • Very True, supporter,
But I realized that its not much of an upgrade for the hassle, I have not used mine for a good two years now, and I just found out that there is July 2016 firmware update and the ones before in the last two years that have made it even more future proof, and I trust yamaha to be better than Pioneer, at least that what I told myself and on top of that my brother in law was not keen, not that I convinced him very much anyway. So better save for the 4k tv and shield in the coming months. Still tempting though, ahhhhhhh Daaammmmm

    More stock has become available.

  • My finger is just hovering over buy it now!!!!

    • Do it

      • When I just checked it said "quantity: 0, almost gone". Uh, that's not really "almost" gone….

  • Amazon is selling , The latest model of this Pioneer VSX-1130-K is selling for 399.00 $us (511.00 $Au) with shipping of 78$US so total of 611.00$Au

Note that US receivers are frequently 110-120V only specifically for their market. Because they can require a somewhat large amount of power means a stepdown transformer could add a significant chunk of cash plus they take up a bit of room.

      Definitely cheap though.

  • OOooohhhh I snoozed and losed AGAIN.

Hoping that the "more than 10" in stock at the Kogan ebay page is eventually transferred to the DS page. And yes, I tried entering the C20DS code at this one and it didn't work :(

  • +1

Just bought one. Back in stock..

  • Me to, thanks OP.

  • More in stock oh yeah….. Brought another one :)

The manual is 142 pages: http://www.pioneer-audiovisual.eu/sites/default/files/manual…

  • What is the warranty on these things?
Are they grey imports? Manufacturers warranty?

    • +2

From this on the auction page:
