This may be of interest for those considering buying a GPS. Garmin have a promotion running from 28/7/2010 until 30/9/2010. Buy selected Garmin GPS and you get bonus lifetime maps (for that unit only). Up to 4 maps a year. Normally valued at $189. NOTE: Saw this in Dick Smith catalogue, fine print states go to garmin.com.au however no details on their website yet ( so hope it's OK to post this).

yep thanks stumo, updated title to make that clear to people. I guess the useful life of a GPS is 3 yrs or so, so that is its limitation.
yeah, life of the unit probably means until the next model is bought out… still a few years map updates not bad, specially with all the work going on around melbourne…
This is their fine print from their american site:
If you purchase a nüMaps Lifetime™ subscription (sold separately), you will receive up to four (4) map data updates per year, when and as such updates are made available on Garmin’s website, for one (1) compatible Garmin product until your product’s useful life expires or Garmin no longer receives map data from its third party supplier, whichever is shorter.
Which Garmin unit is highly recommended. I currently run Garmin on my HTC DiamondII phone. But what about units, can anyone recommend what their best model, (value for money) is?
I like the nuvi 1350 for $200 (sometimes possible to find, but never ever at JB - wait for deals at HN or DS)
I'm pretty sure their definition of "Lifetime" is different to ours. You may want to check that in the fine print, specifically, look for wording such as "lifetime of your device".
