  • has anyone tried these bad boys?

I did a bit of research into them about 6 months ago during an eBay sale. Basically they've come a long way in the past 10 years. Ended up buying the base model Roomba for around $400 from the good guys and I could not be happier. They are outstanding. They sort of 'sweep' with a vacuum function. I leave the house for 2 hours and our Roomba will do the whole house. I regret not getting one earlier. Picks up my dogs hair no problems and I only need to do a 'proper' once a week. I imagine this model would crap all over mine.

Saying that - other brands to consider are neato and potentially the xiaomi which you need to by from a Chinese website. I didn't feel comfortable dropping $500 on a robot vac that wouldn't have local support. However the reviews on whirlpool have been positive.

      • Hey $400 is more my style, is your home carpeted?
Also, what is the model of the unit your bought for that price?

        Thanks

The one linked below is the one I got - don't forget cash back. It does the trick.

My house is an old style bungalow in adelaide. 4 rooms at the front with the kitchen and dining in the back. Lounge, kitchen , dining and hallway are polished floor boards. 3 bedrooms are carpeted. Will go into all the rooms in a random manner and clean. I can not fault my little roomba - but then again I had really really low expectations.

        • @flashi007: Thanks for that. One more question though, will this puppy clean throughout different rooms or do I have to stick it in each room individually?

        • @EightImmortals: Mine goes room to room without hassle. It goes from lounge to kitchen and there is a fair wooden "bump" between the rooms. It won't travel up/down stairs but anything a few cm of below and it'll travel straight over it!

      • I regret not getting one earlier. Picks up my dogs hair no problems and I only need to do a 'proper' once a week. I imagine this model would crap all over mine.

Be careful with leaving them unattended if you have pets that can have 'accidents' inside the house…

or you might indeed end up with a robot that craps all over something.

Still a lot more than what I am willing to spend on a vacuum cleaner. I just ordered the older/base model instead at around $440 after the discount in the same deal. Thanks.

    • Thanks for that, looks like it has good reviews on productreview and 2 days left on the ebay 20% off deal. :)

    • not available foe WA people. bummer :(

    • I have the older model, bought it like 5 years ago. I thought it would be bit of a gimmick but have to say it's awesome. I don't see much need for the advanced Roomba it's never going to be your primary vacuum.

  • I have this model!! Love it, picks up more dust than my Dyson! You have to turn it on everyday to ensure you don't have too much dust accumulated otherwise trash bin gets full too quickly. My house is tiled and carpeted.

How do these things go with slightly uneven surfaces? Tiles in my place aren't completely flat.

    • Apparently no problem, they might struggle a bit with shagpile carpets and things like that but otherwise my research has led me to believe they handle everything else OK.

I fix roombas in my spare time. The 630 for $440 is a great price. I fix 530s, 630s, 780s and the scoobas. You can use virtual walls with the 630, but not virtual lighthouses which help guide it through the house. You would have to get the 980 or second hand 780, 880 for that. Having said that the 630 is a great unit and will clean very well. It just might exit a room before having cleaned it all.. people shut the doors or use the virtual wall to keep it in an area. The main thing that goes wrong is that people do not clean them well. Its not to be abused like a normal vac. cleaner.

  • Neato XV is about half this price.

    • Is it only half as good though?

      • +1

I think it's at least 80% as good

        • I actually think it's better than irobot…. I've had irobot & have neato now, and found irobot always missed areas… so for me the navigation of the Neato is SO much better… no missed areas. I've also had some Neato's in action for about 5 years now, and other than battery replacements still going strong!

        • @cheapgeek: Yeah I just received my Neato battery replacements from Amazon today, which I got during the Amazon $10 off promo.
