  • Where is the colo? Is this for better proximity to an exchange?

    • Hi AlexG, the Colo is on Bourke Road in Alexandria. SY4 has dark fibre access to the Southern Cross Cable Network which provides prime positioning and low latency transit to the US. I was in there last night getting speeds on my laptop exceeding 800Mbps symmetrical with latency to Google as low as 0.35ms.

to Answer your question properly AlexG, this is not for residental users to get improved speeds at home, it is for people who have a server and they want to put it into a datacentre, effectively using their rack space, power and data connection, being in the datacentre directly means you save on electricity costs at home and have access to a better network as per DataOneNetworks comment above

The only way you will get better internet at home will be, move closer to the exchange (you not the house :) ) or pray you get fttp or decent fttn speeds when it actually ever arrives, furthermore you might be in a HFC Telstra or Optus HFC area so you will definately get better speeds even on the slower 30/1 telstra cable base plan

Definately a good deal for colo rack space

My only gripe is they should really be offering at least 2RU but for the money I guess this is acceptable, finding a decent 1RU server with grunt can be more expensive than their 2RU counterpart

500gb of data is also pretty low when you can get a VPS for 100 per month with the following specs as per below but none the less if you own your server and are in sydney then I can say its a pretty reasonable deal

In terms of access, what level of access do I get to my server as you state, emergency / occasional access, so for example I want to come in 3 days a week to perform backup operations to USB drives can I do this with this package?

For those who don't own a server the below pricing is pretty damn good for the specs / bandwidth (another vendor)

    Sydney
    SYD-2xL5420-16GB-2x1TBSATA SuperMicro Blade
2x L5420 CPUs (Dual Quad Core 2.5Ghz CPUs)
    16GB RAM
    2x 1TB SATA
    1TB data
    /29 IPv4
    /64 IPv6 $95.00 AUD

    • RansomIT is SY3, I assume barely any differences though. (Assuming this is what you're posting about)

Also note there's the same server with 2x 240GB SSDs available. Also, /29 from memory is 6 usable IPs rather than 1. Edit: confirmed 5 usable IPs. Still better than 1.

Edit: Note these are meant to be dedicated servers, not virtual servers..?

the whole point I am making is anyone who wanted to not take advantage of this deal could go to Ransom IT anyway
dedicated server vs your own for the same "price point"

I am an azure partner and I don't have to pay for my virtual environment but for other people under 100 per month for an 2TB 16gb of ram server is awesome
can easily run CSS and CS GO off it not a problem

        • +1

No, yeah, that was my point too. It seems a little silly to pay $100/mo when you can get it with a server for $95/mo elsewhere. Not to mention extra data, more IPs, etc.

The only difference is SY3 to SY4, though I assume it's all the same peering.

        • @dyl:

          Most likely would be
Much better to have a Virtual server these days as they supply the hardware and keep it upgraded
Less costs upfront too and a much better business viewpoint on virtual these days including cloud

This deal is good for the oldschoolers

        • @shawncro 222: RansomIT's offering is dedicated, so in-between virtual and colo. It's basically hiring a whole one of their physical servers, no virtualization required.

Unsure if this is what you meant by virtual server, but thought I would just clarify - there is no virtualization involved with these; they're full, standalone dedicated servers… Or at least they're meant to be.

        • @dyl:

I think you will find for 95 a month they should be real servers

Some companies run VM machines on one big box, it can work but having your "own" server is much better for a lot of reasons

        • @dyl:

Some companies have policies in place that they must host their own systems on their own hardware. Some people already have hardware that they want to utilise and prefer to self-manage.

Also, can you pickup a phone at 3am and call the owner's mobile for tech support if required? You have to not only look at the physical services on offer, but the ancillary services being offered as well.

If anyone can show me a better colo offer that is like-for-like, I will beat it by 10%.

        • @DataOneNetworks: I've actually personally contacted the owner of RansomIT about an urgent matter at around 11PM in the past, but I see your point still. Tech support and staff/owners willing to go out of their way for a customer is extremely valuable. If you were to live up to answering your phone at 3AM to support a customer, then the $100/mo isn't bad at all.

        • depending on your needs, some people use the real server and add extra drives, as there are lots to 1TB SSDs around now and 8TB platter drives. So if you are running a business with office or backing up other peoples data, you end up with VERY cheap storage per GB ……

  • I don't have a proper server (as in a blade server), but I do have a powerful pc lying around that's got an ATX case. Would I be able to fit that in a data centre?

    • This is for 1 ru, so not in this deal

    • these racks are made for what is often called a "pizza box" server, they are typically 1-2 RU, and don't need a shelf in the rack. because you are paying for space, by the time you get a shelf to place and ATX case and the size of the ATX case, you are probably at 5RU minimum. One company used to sell part of a shelf for people that wanted to host "mac mini" computers, which are about the size of a NUC computer.

this type of hosting is very attractive for people that hook-up several sites e.g business offices and the colo becomes a hub point", or you need an always on "web site / ecommerce store / mail system" because you are paying for it based on 24x7", it works out cheaper than Azure or AWS for "always on 24x7" systems.

Getting the right plan is important so that you get enough data incase you use it for backups of your workers devices….but 500GB is actually a fair bit of data depending on your business and if you do incremental back-ups or complete images.

I use shared hosting myself (home use) for my mail system ….. allows me to host a proper domain…..$18 for the domain pa and $2 per month for the server …. will need to do more with it when I get the time. They are also good in that you can kick off downloads for geo blocked content and then you can access it when you want and not have the home PC running all the time with it's 300W powe4r bill. It's very expensive to run a PC at home 24x7 …. I used to use a 10W atom at home that ran 24x7 for downloads …but the shared hosting seems to work fine.

Once you get into hosting, even as home user, there is a lot you can do as you can spin VPNs, torrent servers, clients, cloud storage, whatever you want, a friend of mine has a hosted server in the USA, so doesn't pay for VPNs or DNS's, etc to get his geoblocked content.

  • If anyone can find a reasonable colo offer that is it in the same DC (with the exception of the Equinix Family, SY1-4) I will BEAT IT by 10%. When I say reasonable, it can't be 10RU for $25 with 40TB or a full rack for $200.

    Hi shawncro 222,
"My only gripe is they should really be offering at least 2RU" - No provider that I have seen is offering 2RU for $100, they would be losing money on it. In reply to your question about access, yes 3 days a week is reasonable as I am there three days a week so provided you would want to come out when I am going, should not be an issue. But it would not be possible if entry had to be scheduled (a fee would apply for this).
No right-minded colo provider would be offering unescorted 24/7 access to anyone who has less than 10RU. The risks would be too great. Look at Global Switch, the only way they will give you 24/7 access is if you have a full rack or more.
Data is also negotiable as well. I am happy to work something out if I get genuinely interested people.

    Hey garage sale,
I can offer shelf colo as well, if you want to drop me an e-mail I can see what I can do.
You "legally" can't use AU colo space or dedicated servers for pirate torrenting. Let's put the illegality of piracy through torrenting to the side for a sec. Every proper provider has some clause in their MSAs, contracts, etc. that prohibit this use.

    • Well Any DC worth their salt would ensure

      • Cameras are in operation
      • Swipe cards only give you access to your section
      • All entries and exits are logged including copies of your licence

I have unrestricted access to a few Datacenters in Brisbane but yeah I agree I wouldn't take the risk with any old person getting access to a DC

Torrents would be an issue but running your own private ftp would not be provided the content is "legal"

    • I have two seed boxes in the same DC as this deal that put over 5TB per month each, some providers just don't care and turn a blind eye to it. Just like more smaller ISPs

      • Get a cheap $2/mo server from ChicagoVPS for this, they couldn't care less.

        • I've got a few boxes colo'd in equinix that do other things, game servers etc. I use YardVPS for those low CPU but high bandwidth stuff :)

    • not all torrents are copyrighted material …..it's just a method of distributing content…. especially literature of which there is lots on the internet and has moved to the public domain due to authors being dead, etc but can sometimes be slow to access.
