Long time lurker, first time poster. Bring it!

Strangely Sony's flagship was missing from the eBay 20% off sale… So I had Shopping Square put it up today! Yes I know their price before discount is higher than other eBay stores, but with the discount it makes it the cheapest on eBay by about $40.

  • Can you have both sims active on 4g at the same time?

    • +2

No phones do this yet, but this does have 4G+3G which is as good as it gets

  • The only real advantage the XZ has over the X Performance is 4K recording and a USB-C port…rest is pretty much identical. For a good $120 less, I'd go for the X Performance Dual SIM…

    • +1

      Bigger screen
      bigger battery
snapdragon 820 vs the slower 650
^my bad didn't know there was two version of the xperia x, still screen and battery matters.
just a few important things you see to of missed.

      • +1

Screen is 0.2" bigger, same resolution (1080p)…which makes the X performance marginally sharper
Battery is only 200mAh bigger on the XZ

        • add those two things plus the things you listed plus the fact that the XZ is lighter and thinner makes it's no different then the yearly iphone upgrades lol
$120 is cheap for all that

        • @Axelstrife:

Same SoC, same camera, same screen resolution, same amount of RAM…it's not an upgrade in any meaningful way.

        • @twister292:If you think so lol

        • +1

          @Axelstrife:

iPhones have substantially more powerful SoCs every new generation. This is just literally a re-skinned X performance. If you think it's worth an extra $120, up to you.

        • +2

@twister292: I don't think the X Performance has the laser auto-focus that the XZ has.

    • +1

I did my comparison and had also chosen to go the X Performance, but for what it's worth there are a few extra nice features on the XZ that tempted me - and for only an extra $120 I'd probably do it. The battery is a little bigger so the phone should last longer between charges, it supports quick charge 3 so should be able to top up faster, laser to make autofocus faster, and of course it's a little newer so is likely to be supported by android updates a little longer.

But, after hanging on to my Z2 for well over 2 years now I actually decided to jump ship. My Galaxy S7 is due to be delivered today - got on the $50+$5 Virgin Mobile plan. Optus coverage is fine for me, so worked out to be cheaper than buying the XP/XZ outright, the S7 has 4GB ram, better screen (if slightly smaller), and slightly bigger battery. The S7 also still supports ANT+ (so will talk to my bike cadence sensor) whilst support for that was dropped by Sony after the Z2. As a bonus will also be getting $100 credit on my bill, $50 cashback, and a watch. All worth the hassle of disabling Samsung bloatware (have to do something similar with the Sony anyhow), and using a launcher to avoid the touchwiz annoyance.

      • sounds like you have a reliable technique to "disabling Samsung bloatware", what's your recommendation for doing this confidently? Would prefer not to root (wife's phone, so need to keep it simple!) - from what i've seen of her S6 edge, it's not possible (or obvious) how to disable all the crap. Cheers for any info you can share!

        • I've heard it's possible using ADB (without root), but don't have any experience myself.

        • Info is here: https://www.cnet.com/au/how-to/9-settings-every-samsung-s7-o…

"When in the app drawer, tap on the Edit button and then start picking off unnecessary apps one by one by tapping on the "-" icon. A prompt will alert you when an app can only be turned off rather than uninstalled."

Also, am using Nova Launcher. There are other launchers out there, no doubt some better, but it works for me.

        • @PlasticSpaceman:
Thanks for the link and info. Be nice to be able to rip out all the Samsung bloat altogether permanently.

        • @swampson: Yeah, +1 from me. Would love to have the option of going a clean android build without loading a custom rom. Having said that, I've come from a Sony and the S7 is actually pretty clean compared to that. I haven't disabled everything yet on the S7, but it's not bad. Touchwiz just was weird so happy with Nova. I do miss the double tap to wake on the Sony, but other than that this thing is great. Getting +200Mbps download speed on Virgin/Optus.

      • What Sony Bloatware do you need to remove?
The only thing I've found is their "What's new" section.
Sony is one of the better vendors when it comes to the most "vanilla" android experience.

        • Sony bundle a lot of junk, it's just not as in your face as samsung. The what's new, xperia lounge, ar fun apps to name a few

        • Agree the experience is far closer to standard, it's the apps that were/are annoying. Annoying in that they take up space/can't be deleted…..
