For those who has no idea about the phone. Whirlpool has a lengthy post about this model.
https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2577746

To sum up, this is not a phone for everyone. It's a concept phone, the phone boasts of 91.1% screen to body ratio, true innovation + technology creation. The few impressed me are:

Ultra-high 91.3% screen-to-body ratio—highest on any smartphone to date

  • Full ceramic body: Ceramic back cover, frame, and side buttons, 8 MoHs hardness. Seamless connectors fuse Mi MIX’s body without any external adhesives
  • Cantilever piezoelectric ceramic acoustic technology replaces the traditional earpiece speaker, allowing you to listen to calls without the earpiece
  • Ultrasonic proximity sensor hidden behind the display, replaces traditional infrared proc sensor

For anyone who has not use the AliExpress app to buy anything yet. They do have further discount.

    That price 😇😇😇😇😇

  • +5

Id rather wait for the s8 in 3 months.

    • +20

At lease you'll get a 2 yr local warranty vs zero warranty. Seriously, who will pay 1K for Chinese brand phone?

      • +6

The S8 is expected to be $1400+ for the base model given the way the AUD is going and the recent price jacks by both Samsung and Crapple. Thats 50% more than this model.

        • recent price jacks

and no actual jacks in the phone given the recent reports

        • @spawnlaeer: The jacks happen in between models. As per my other comment below:

Base Models (RRP, first release) -

          Samsung S3 - $7xx iPhone 5 - $8xx
          Samsung S4 - $8xx iPhone 5S - $9xx
          Samsung S5 - $9xx iPhone 6 - $10xx
          Samsung S6 - $10xx iPhone 6S - $10xx
          Samsung S7 - $11xx iPhone 7 - $11xx

Price adjustments are periodical given the AUD strengths (+-10%).

      • Agree. Bazel less things look pretty for a while.

      • +1

It's Xiaomi, a huge brand, has an insane market share over there. My current Xiaomi phone is great. I think this phone is amazing and would totally buy it if I was in the market for a top of the line phone.

  • +6

    $1k for a Xiaomi? Why?

    • the perfomance to price is really good though. If you want a samsung note 8 like that, it would be $1.8k+

    • +1

so 1K+ for an iPhone is OK?
What Apple will charge for the same spec? $2k+ if NOT $3K+.

      • +2

Apple has an extremely good support network for that money.

    • Did you even read the description?

      • +1

Yes. It was more a question of why you'd risk that much money on a phone with no warranty, rather than what makes it expensive.

        • -2

Because some people probably have enough disposable income to spend some money on something they're passionate about (yes, people can be passionable about phones), even while acknowledging the lack of warranty.

    • -1

you're typical Apple fanbois who question it only on the merit of a brand and in the mean while takes anything Apply give you at a much inflated price whithout asking why been ripped off so much
you want to be ripped off, spend all your money, it your business not mine…

      • the fact it doesn't have band 28 means you aren't getting a phone that makes the best use of 4G band aggregation and speed …. ok if your carrier is china telekom but not if your carrier is optus or telstra who are building out the band 28 infrastructure.

i guess for me it's coverage and speed of downloads that are important as most phones seem to do the same things otherwise.

you will probably still be getting ios updates long after this xioami has gone end of support.

not many android phones get 4 major android updates , but lots of apple phones have current ios and are 4 years old…… hence i'm always having to upgrade my android to get release of the os.

      • Hah, butthurt much? When did I say anything about Apple? I run a Moto G4.

  • +14

It's a nice phone, but I won't pay more than $500 for ANY Xiaomi.

    • I understand why u comment that. yes xiaomi has heaps great phones under $500. You don't have to pay more if you are happy for these phones.

I'm using xiaomi redmi note 3 global version which does all I need except one thing —- it looks just ordinary if you do not want to say ugly.

Not sure about other cheap xiaomi models. But I doubt they look any better.

      • -7

I have Xiaomi redmi note 3 Kate model, its a piece of junk

        • The redmi Note 3 is only $200ish or less. Can't complian. You get what you paid for.
But it's a very reliable mobile with exceptional reception.

        • -2

          @y12345678:

Yes 200, I can complain because it is junk that worked well for a couple of days.

No its not reliable because after a week of receiving, it has so many problems that I gave up using the phone.

        • Bought one of these Kate's for my son for Xmas - under $200. Have put the Google Now launcher on it as I don't really like the MUI interface. It's a great phone so far. What happened to yours ?

        • +2

          @bti_jet:
yes, if you get anything NOT working properly and you dont get it fixed, it's still a piece of junk regardless the price or brand
I had my problems with the same phone, but after a week of draining battery, I got an update OTA, now works as a charm, way better than those phones twice the price! I'd never expected it to be compared to flagship big brands for $220 though.

        • @Jamesx:
Agree, I spent a day to flash the international ROM for my rn3.
After that no problem at all.

        • @Fitzy777:

my first xiaomi was an rn3 - i flashed official and cm because i kept experiencing hang ups constantly or voice drop outs every 10secs, i contacted neverbuying to rma they kept ignoring me. I said from that point ill never buy another xiaomi phone.

Then hearing all the hype about how good the rn3 kate was and b28 blah blah, when i seen the post on the 11/11 sale. I thought id try one more time maybe i was unlucky. This time phone was even worse same flashes were done official ota 8.1 stable and cm, this phone reboots and turns on randomly or bricks into bootloop until battery is flat.

Maybe my luck, but twice in a row. I highly doubt it. I think there rubbish phones and whats worse is the warranty status especially buying from aliexpress or neverbuying

        • -1

          @Jamesx:

ive tried fixing it twice now, what would you do since ive already done ota upgrade and cm?

no S### sherlock if you dont fix something it stays the same. You are one smart cookie two thumbs up :)

im not comparing to flagship phones when its 200, but this post at $900+ you have to have rocks in your head to risk that sort of cash on this type of phone

        • @bti_jet: Yeah cool mate. We only did the OTA updates on the phone, then installed Google Now launcher. No issues yet, battery life great, so have fingers crossed. I wouldn't spend $900 on one either, no matter how nice it looks. Just too risky for me. Cheers.

        • @Fitzy777:

Hope all goes well for you and stays that way, Im going to try Nexus ROM, but at this point I cbf as I've already done 2 flashes and no real improvement.

When I can be bothered I will flash with ROM and hope for the best, in all honesty this will be my last Xiaomi phone for sure.

  • "It's a concept phone". wut?

  • -7

For this kind of money. I rather get the LG V20.

    • +3

No one should ever buy another LG phone, their shitty phones crap out and die at a very high rate.

  • -2

$1000 for a chinese branded phone? Hahahah no thanks.

    • +2

well you cant get other phones from different brands with that specs for a lower price

  • +5

I know the phone looks awesome but come one! for that price! That's a huge profit for the reseller

  • +38

You know people - rather than actually asking who'd pay $1000 for this phone - how about Googling it up to see what this phone is before making a judgement? It is an almost full-screen phone that takes up 90+% of the entire area and is what Apple Fanbois dream of day in and out for their perfect iPhone. It uses new technologies to get around having the earpiece on the front and is a very nice looking device that will wow anyone if they saw it. This model has been rated by many well established sites (including GSMArena) to be the most innovative phones released this year by far. Something no doubt that Samsung and Apple will eventually catch onto in 2017/2018.

      • +17

C'mon, did you google it hard enough.

If touching the edge all the time was a problem, you would see a lot more people complaining about the s7/s7 edge's screen, but you don't. There's probably some sort of palm rejection software in it just like those samsung phones. Nothing gimmicky about the screen, it's more of an aesthetic thing in my books.

Innovation might be a stretch, but there's a couple of new things that they are doing like the all ceramic body. I have not seen other companies do this, supposedly this stuff is as scratch resistant as sapphire but brittle compared to metal. I'm not sure how it compares to glass, but hopefully they refine this stuff so it isn't as brittle.

They may not have been the first to come up with this kind of screen, but sharp never really fleshed out the design phone and didn't make it a phone that people would actually want to use. When it came out it was pretty under powered so most people probably wouldn't want it, this I can see more people buying (i personally wouldn't, mainly because of the price tag).

        • I wish I'd agree with you but the most people complain about with the s7 edge is the edge… Not the s7 though cause it does have side bezels.

        • @clse945111: You don't have to agree, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Just don't exaggerate it and present it as facts.

most people complain about with the s7 edge is the edge

I can think of a few more issues that I think is more common, touchui, bloat and smudgy surface.

Not the s7 though cause it does have side bezels.

If you want to get technical about it, none of these phones are bezeless. The s7 edge is only tapered to the edge to give the illusion of a bezeless design. The Mix is somewhere between the s7 and s7 edge, I only included the edge because it's an extreme example of the bezels being too close to your hands.

        • @Hunga:

          touchui, bloat and smudgy surface

You'll get these on the xiaomi phones too, miui isn't bloat free, but hey…custom roms will fix many things though that applys to almost all phones. Also, were you trying to say touchwiz?
Nothing you mentioned is s7 edge specific, but accidentally touching the sides is fairly specific to the phone or other minimal bezel phones.

none of these phones are bezeless

Sure, but is that the point?
The point is whether there's enough gap to not touch the screen accidentally, and the mix being a 6.4" device I'd say it's most likely going to be a problem.(heck, even with bezels it happens sometimes)
People who are dedicated to spending $1k for the phone likely won't care about these things anyway, we humans are pretty good at justifying purchases.

        • @clse945111: Actually the 6.4" screen on a 91% screen device is only about the same physical size as a Note 4 or 7 at 5.7". That is why people want to go bezel-less - to maximise the screen whilst still keeping the overall dimensions to be similar to current devices.
Unfortunately, this is the way to go with Bezels in the future. It will get thinner and thinner. Software will be better to get around the side touches.

I can almost guarantee that the iPhone 8 will be similar to this and Apple will market it as if they invented the damn thing. Then the whole world will love it.. because it was apparently invented by Apple.

        • @clse945111: Not sure where your're trying to go with this, but ok

      • I agree. Its more like a gimmick though i don't know why I rated you a -ve

        :p

    • Isn't the front facing camera placement in an awkward spot. Its at the bottom left where your hand will hold the phone. Maybe fine for right handers but left handers it could get awkward.

My two cents. What i would have done with this phone is add front firing speakers so it has space to have the camera at the top at least.

      • +1

sometimes you do need to compromise, just like the camera on my xps13 which is not in the middle, but the left bottom corner.

      • When you are using the front facing camera, you can just flip it and the phone will automatically orient itself correctly. So it shouldn't be a problem

        • or they could have had that part where the camera is up top instead of having to get users using their phones upside down.

        • @xoom: Yeah, not sure why people are downvoting that. It's great that they got rid of lots of front elements, but the ones they left on could have been positioned better.

        • @xoom: It looks like you value your front facing camera a lot, and that's totally fine. To me, this phone is intended to be form over function. Extending the bezel above will ruin the unique bezeless aesthetics of this phone that xiaomi intended to create. So I really think you're missing the point of this phone here…

I only pointed that out to you because to me, simply flipping the phone when you need the front facing camera giving a very standard placement of the camera doesn't seem that big of a deal.

        • -2

@Hunga: buts that is the thing. what might not be a big deal to you might be to others.

just think about that and let it sink in.

basically what im saying is when a phone is this price range it should have almost all boxes tick.

did someone say no band 28. this might not be a big deal to you but again. it might be for others.

        • -1

@xoom: I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you didnt finish reading the first line…

        • @Hunga:
Before i get into your post. I would just like to say. We get negged now for having an opinion? Or for agreeing with others opinions contrary to those who think this phone is the best thing since slice bread? Seriously.

No. I read your whole post. They could have had the bit where the camera is up top. Then the dead space. The bit next to the camera. This can have the screen go to this edge. That way the phone is all screen except where the camera is.

Again this is all asthetics and personal opinion. Same goes for wanting band 28.

        • -1

@xoom: Since you didn't go back to read it or didn't get it. I legitimised your opinions/preferences in the first line and now you're telling me i don't!? I've even reinforced it by presenting my take on it, clearly as opinion.

I'm telling you the reasoning behind their design choice since it's their main marketing point. Obviously that conflicts with you so it isn't for you. End of story.

        • @Hunga: i get what you are saying. Xiaomi wants the phone to look like its all screen by putting the camera at the bottom.

They could have achieved much the same with the camera up top left and the screen stretching over to this area so it does not look they just move what they have at the bottom of the phone now to the top.

If they did this. They would have greater than 91.1% screen to body ratio.

Now i know all this may sound petty but at $1000 for a phone not having to flip a phone upside down to take a picture could be a deciding factor for some.

Im sure there are other equally valid factors why people would not go with this phone.

This last bit is a comment in general.

All i am saying is that dismissing someones arguments against getting this phone even with valid reasons or concerns just stiffles the discussions about products on this site.

        • -1

          @xoom:

All i am saying is that dismissing someones arguments against getting this phone even with valid reasons or concerns just stiffles the discussions about products on this site.

Oh, I see what's happening here now.

I've legitimsied your opinion/preferences (hopefully third time's a charm), and EXPLICITLY told you my view is just opinion. Yet you see this as me attacking the legitimacy of your opinions and you're getting offended by it. You don't seem to see that differing opinions/preferences can coexist without hampering the legitimacy of your own, which is why it puzzled me that you would get offended by what i presented as opinion. You shouldn't even need to think that far when i've acknowledged and legitimised your view from the start.

I made it clear that it was opinion solely not to offend you, as oppose to trying to convince you that you are wrong to think that way… I'm not marketing for xiaomi, why do I care if you buy it or not

        • @Hunga: that last bit was directed at other people in this discussion who seem to neg others peoples opinion no matter how valid they are simply because its contrary to theirs.

They seem to think that this phone is the best thing since sliced bread and anyone who does not agree should be negged without so much as to say why they disagree.

Now before more negs come. I think this phone is up there when it comes to features list. In saying that it does have its shortcomings. So its not quite perfect but it does make steps in the right direction.

        • -1

          @xoom:

that last bit was directed at other people in this discussion who seem to neg others peoples opinion no matter how valid they are simply because its contrary to theirs.

Oh boo hoo, you got negged. Don't take it personally, this is the internet we're talking about here. For all we know they've negged you because you because you smell funny.

Now before more negs come. I think this phone is up there when it comes to features list. In saying that it does have its shortcomings. So its not quite perfect but it does make steps in the right direction.

At this point I don't care about the phone and i haven't for the last 3 replies, just don't get offended by my opinions.

      • One thing that they could have added is the camera module being a pop-up one similar to flashes on compact cameras. This will allow them to do the entire screen up to 100%, whilst still have a selfie camera. Not sure how durable this may be though - but see what happens since the Mi Mix 2 and derivatives are already hyped and on the cards for mid-2017.

    • -3

So what about the highest screen ratio? Anything 90% is good enough you won't feel the difference in daily usage. All is about ripping people off for newly released products. Never buy newly released products. Full stop. Unless you will die without owning it. Then manufacturers will learn and reduce their profits and sale prices.

    • +10

      well said, Mr Liu!
but you do know those people who "ask who'd pay $1000 for a chinese phone" dont give a shit about the fact that this is an awesome phone, right? for many of them, these comments were not about this phone, but all about China and Chinese brand.

    • -1

People are asking who would pay 1k for this phone for the simple reason when it has problems there is no warranty. That's why the judgement

      • they do provide warranty in the region where it's been sold. so, dont judge the phone, but questioning the warranty, so you're more rational.

    • +1

I reckon xiaomi mix deserve it's own post. And the post provided extra information about mix pro and 1st time app purchase coupon.

  • +19

Who would pay 1000 for Xiaomi phone…I still don't understand how people pay 1k+ for Apple iPhone still….

    • +5

Yep, never going to pay anywhere near that for any phone, let alone iJunk.

    • +4

I would never pay 1k for any phone. Apple are excellent when it comes to warranty, I can understand why people pay extra for peace of mind.

But 1k on a Xiaomi with virtually no warranty, that's just stupid. I don't care how great the specs are, its way too much money to risk

  • +4

It was good enough for MKBHD to devote a video to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7plA1ALkQw

    • That youtube video says the phone is $500USD, but this deal is $700USD?

      • +2

yeap. the official price is mix @US$500 and pro @US$580. But the supply is extremely limited and demand is overwhelming globally.

It ended that you can only get mix /pro from 3rd part at a hike price then.

        • +1

It ended that you can only get mix /pro from 3rd part at a hike price then.

And this is a bargain? :O

I didn't know feeding the greedy 3rd parties was the purpose of ozb…

        • @clse945111: Spot on!

  • +1

yeah would have to offer AUS warrenty before i'd spend this much on a phone from aliexpress or anything similar.

though the phone itself looks bloody amazing.

  • +5

$1000 for a chinese phone with no warranty? I never thought I'd say this… I'd rather get an iphone.

    • +7

      That's a bit extreme!
Agree with you on the first part though.

  • Looks to me like a Sony XPeria on steroids.

  • +6

    It's a great phone.
Son has a note 3 pro and I previously had the mi note pro.

This phone feels way better than both of those. No band 28 yes but on Telstra in country Vic it's not an issue. Constant 4g and speeds are plenty adequate.

You have to use it to appreciate the screen and what Xiaomi have done here. MIUI 8 has some great little features as well and with nova launcher on top the phone doesn't miss a beat.

Sure for 1k and no local warranty is a bit much for some but hey it's only money :).

I had mine ordered from vickmall on release and received it a couple of weeks ago.

    • +10

You mind buying me one then since "it's only money"?

    • +1

I have Kate model band 28, its a piece of junk.

Seller won't return, second Xiaomi phone I've had.

Both have been junk. Might be a great phone for some but also junk to others

      • +2

You get that with most things mate.
Sons note 3 still going strong.
My note pro got a cracked screen but still going great.

On the other hand my experience with Samsung phones hasn't been great.

The early S2 or 3 had to go back 3 times due to USB port been dodgy.

The first note edge had a similar issue and ended up been lost by the service centre.

Past lg g4 suffered the bootloop issue.

For me so far Xiaomi phones have been decent, nothing to say that they won't crap themselves soon.

For the money you pay for the lower end models and what you get I think they're a great product.

        • +1

That's your point of view and experience. You say there great phones, I disagree in my case. I understand that all phones have there problems as I had a few in the past with other brands.

But not the level of problems I've had with the Xiaomi phone, my current Kate model will bootloop till the battery dies. I only used the phone for a week.

Now its in the box, i'm not even using it at the stage.

For the money I think its a pos, OK I only spent 200, that's 200 on a phone that worked well for couple of days.

I have never encountered so many problems with a phone the way i have with a Xiaomi, and this is why I can't understand anyone willing to spend 1k on a phone from this company

      • My note 2 has been going great. It cost under $200 delivered and there's only been one (software) thing wrong with it. I've never had a case on it as I don't often drop it. My nephew dropped it, a few days ago, sideways onto the corner of a concrete gutter on the street and it now has a chunk taken out of the bezel - but the screen is still fine.

  • +5

No doubt, it is a great concept phone and considering the price, it does look expensive. However, if it would have been released by Samsung, It would have been 1.5k+
At the same time, I think the price will further drops in next couple of months.
I bought xiaomi mi5s a few months back for $450 and I am loving it. I thought, moving from samsung Galaxy S7 edge to xiaomi mi5s will make me feel bad. but infact i love this phone.

My opinion is if you are planning to purchase a new phone, then definitely buy this phone. If you are currently happy with your current phone, then wait for further price drop.

People who saying $1k on chinese phone is too much, I am sure, if they purchase it, they will definitely fell in love with this.

    • I believed you will get better resell value if it is coming from Samsung than Xiaomi

      • iPhone Bois talk about same thing.

I bought it on the launch day. It is an amazing phone and I love it.

My imagination of they trying to push the prices up into the top brand range?. I thought the benefit of buying Chinese Androids —- best value for buck. Sure doesnt seem that way. Wow. Ripoff. (yes im aware of the Redmi range though)

    • Refer comment on official pricing and the price-gouging for availability.
Remember, it's a US $500/$580 phone being marked up to $700/$750.

outdated idea. We are buying smartphones instead of where they are made of. Everyone is different, but personally, I appreciate the aesthetic feeling, the ultra performance and new innovation + technology experiences which xiaomi mix /pro can offer at my budget.

It's a concept phone with very limited supply and therefore not for everyone. Don't have to try the new phone if you are risk averter of new technology or it's over your budget.

Actually its not. Smartphones - Mid and high range are generally increasing in price.

      Look at it this way:

Base Models (RRP, first release) -

      Samsung S3 - $7xx iPhone 5 - $8xx
      Samsung S4 - $8xx iPhone 5S - $9xx
      Samsung S5 - $9xx iPhone 6 - $10xx
      Samsung S6 - $10xx iPhone 6S - $10xx
      Samsung S7 - $11xx iPhone 7 - $11xx

Every model basically whacks another 100 bucks to it. This is not counting the Plus, Note or the Edge versions which adds another $150 on top of that.

The Mi Range (Premium version, not the Redmi range) started around $3xx for the first generation, with the Mi5s around $6xx on first launch. Basically they were priced at "half the price of the Samsung and Apple Flagships", which is quite fair. The Mi Mix however, breaks this trend to be 75% of the value because they believe they can market it at this price. It is the most expensive phone to come out of a Chinese brand to date, but still in line with their value add system.

Arguably though, when you compare it to the high end versions of the ($1560 AUD) 256GB iPhone 7 Plus with the original Chinese internal price (@$800 AUD), it is still half the price.

  • Isn't there a version of this that has B28?

there is a rumour that 5.5" mini MIX is on the way. Mini suppose to be smaller, more basic and cheaper. Hopefully it has a global version with B28 support.

I'm gonna get negged to hell, and I said something similar in another thread, but $1000 for a Chinese phone, with Chinese warranty (1 year, and 3rd party), from a Chinese company, with Chinese after sales support is considered a bargain? They're certainly not the worst, and most grey importers have average reputations, but AliExpress doesn't have the greatest customer service rep http://www.productreview.com.au/p/aliexpress-com.html - not the sort of thing I'd want to deal with if something went wrong with my $1000 phone.
