For those who has no idea about the phone. Whirlpool has a lengthy post about this model.

To sum up, this is not a phone for everyone. It's a concept phone, the phone boasts of 91.1% screen to body ratio, true innovation + technology creation. The few impressed me are:

  • Cantilever piezoelectric ceramic acoustic technology replaces the traditional earpiece speaker, allowing you to listen to calls without the earpiece

Lol, a $1000 phone thats cheaper than a couple of other sites with better reputations/sales support by $15 is a bargain? Is it a bargain, or a saving of $15 for a $1000 spend? Is this ozbargain, or ozsaving?

        • @smileymiwo: it's price gouging - the phone costs 3499/3999 yuan in China, and they get local support and warranty for several hundred dollars less.

        • @aja12:
You're absolutely right other than one thing — almost no one can get it from official website unless you are the luckiest one.

        • @y12345678: Yes, exactly! And a tonne of those being bought directly from Xiaomi are being bought solely for the purpose of keeping supply low and on selling for a $300+ profit! It hardly makes this a bargain.

I keep missing out on the NES Classic for $99. They're being sold on eBay for $300 - $400 because they're virtually impossible to buy direct from retailers. If I found a seller on eBay that was selling them for $200 and posted it on here, would it be a bargain?

This is also just a concept phone so don't expect lots of OS updates.

This is the best looking phone I've ever seen and definitely one for the future. But rather you than me in being a first mover on something you won't have a warranty for.

  • "I'd never pay that much for a Chinese made phone." No smartphone of any brand for you then.

    • Not all smartphones are made in China.

    • You added in an extra word to fit your little story…

Most people are saying, "I'd never pay that much for a Chinese phone", meaning a phone from a Chinese company that we all know you are fighting and uphill battle to get any warranty claims sorted/sorted in a timely matter and lack of any meaningful support.

      • -2

You've embellished my comment in to a story, shame on you. Warranty is a concern, I agree. That said, many brand name smartphones bought by Australians are grey imports which poses similar warranty issues.

  • 10% gst on top of price paid from 1 Jan 2017

yikes .. 1k for a chinadroid phone.. not sure if i'd consider that a bargain taking in to consideration the lack of hardware and software support here in Australia.

  • With a bezelless display, will the phone trip up when your finger overhangs while gripping?

    • +1

I'll let you know once I get it.

    • I had the same issue with samsung galaxy s7 edge until i covered it with a case.

  • +4

I have the pro version and have using it for about 3 weeks. No issues so far. For background I just came off a iPhone 6s +, and previously had the note 7 and S7 edge. I'm in Singapore, so picked it up for about $1kaud from a store. My initial 2 key concerns, 1 no warranty, and 2 it's a Xiaomi/price.

I know paid about 15% premium to own one. Is it a strictly a $$ bargain? Probably not. is it rare and "feel" exclusive? Very. All the positive reviews from YouTube and Google tells the story so take the time to research.

FWIW It's the best phone I've ever is owned so far. After the disappointment this year with the ip7+ and note 7 I just needed something exciting to fill the void and the mix has so far delivered this for me personally.

My only advice is if you are going to make the plunge, make sure the phone is not rooted and has english Google Play store preinstalled. Else you will have issues with work corporate email apps.
There is a definite risk here with No Warranty and little support, but if you can accept this, you will be truly rewarded with a great unique phone….Until the ip8 and galaxy note 8 comes along.

    • +1

Else you will have issues with work corporate email apps.

      rootcloak might get around that?

      • Thanks, worth looking into. My work uses "good for enterprise"…..the last reminisce of blackberry. It's very restrictive.

  • +3

I have its predecessor, the Mi Max, the phone is great, but even the global ROM doesn't allow you to set your location/time to Australia, which can be a problem for news apps and daylight saving.

As for this phone, I think it is great a Chinese manufacturer is innovating so much.

edit: The phone may be extremely brittle according to this youtube test https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeLKqjvmFvQ

I recently got a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 pro and absolutely would recommend a Xiaomi phone, very happy I went from an iPhone 6. I wanted to go for a Mi Mix, but can't justify the $1000 at the moment (building a house), I wouldve bought it otherwise without a doubt. The specs and design are up there with the best.

For those who are complaining about spending that for a chinese phone, where are your iPhones/Samsung/Google pixel phones built? I would assume not in the higher end of town in the 1st world. China manufactures nearly everything anyway, they make enough technology to get it right sometimes. But I suppose haters are gonna hate…

  • +2

    OK, so just to clarify;

    • This is about 1.5% cheaper than several other websites are offering the phone

    • It is a $250 - $300 mark up over what Xioami directly sells the phone for (most stock is being bought up by sellers like this purely to make large profits due to low supply)

    • No local warranty or after sales support

    • 1 year Chinese warranty through 3rd party

    • It costs $1000

    And it's a bargain?

Bargain. Noun. "a thing bought or offered for sale much more cheaply than is usual or expected."

    • +2

I know right. Nothing about this is an actual bargain.

    • 1.5% cheaper than other website? I failed to find any.

      • EGlobal, DWI.

eeergh Ali Express, I bit the bullet and ordered a Xiaomi (posted on Oz B) through Ali Express around November 12th.I had a disastrous purchase of a phone through Ebay so I thought WTF,lets try the opposition. Well I still haven't got it due to continued 'shipping" issues.

The original issue was AE's message system saying that it had been shipped.

However, the dichotomy was also true. The message also stated at the bottom of the link provided in the 'your item has been shipped' email that shipping was not possible to my place and would cost another $40. Anyway after much frappery I requested them just to send the fking thing in standard mail. This happened around December the 2nd. Looks like I will get to test the AE dispute resolution unless it arrives in the next week or so!!!

If I include the original F-around I had with DWI and their sh!tty Nexus5 debacle (see my other posts), my attempt at securing a phone "bargain" via China goes back to September 19th!!! seems like I just ain't got lady luck on my side. Maybe I should order one of those "Lucky Cats" off of gear best?

Take Away Message #1 = The "your item has been shipped' email does not necessarily mean that.
Take Away message #2 = buy phone from Aussie bricks and mortar

  • I don't claim to be good at marketing, but if this was half the price, wouldn't they sell boatloads?

  • First Samsung thought they were Apple, then Google with their Pixel and now Xiaomi?

    • -1

No, I don't think so. Maybe it's the Apple fanbois felt a bit offended. something like

How could non-apple uses such a new innovation /technology before apple even started?
How could non-apple sell at this premium price?

      • I'm not an apple fanboi but the prices of the above-mentioned phones are getting downright ridiculous.

        • +1

Like $1450 for the Google Pixel XL and $1569 for the iphone 7plus, similarly specced phones.

The Xiaomi seems like a good deal compared to those yes. The finish of my Xiaomi is very good quality, similar to the iphone 6 I came from, but only $257AUD. I was genuinely surprised, half expecting a poor product for the price.

        • Market won't lie. The demanding of this phone is overwhelming — ppl like me are paying extra (US$200-$300 over the official price) for it. you may say it's no-brainer but our buyers just want one.

        • -1

@y12345678: Demand isn't overwhelming! Supply is underwhelming. Many reports indicate Xiaomi is only manufacturing 10,000 units per month. Marketing tactic to make their brand seem more desirable, more in demand than it really is, increase brand awareness and overall sales. "Our" buyers?

        • @aja12:

I mean "We, buyers," indicating all buyers like me….

          @y12345678:

Well, I give up. I never though I'd see a product on this site with a $300 price markup over the official pricing called a bargain and upvoted over 50 times. Insane.

  • Where is the ear speaker for calls?

Also, what is the screen resolution?

  • +2

While I + the deal for OP's effort (probably the cheapest easily obtainable price for the phone), I don't think it's a bargain as such. Yes it's a good phone, but even within Xiaomi's lineup, the Mi5S with the same SD821 SoC is around half the price of this phone…

Not to mention for a device that costs close to $1000, a questionable warranty and lack of Band 28 support don't scream bargain either

  • Oh boy, isn't it just bloody good looking? hopefully xiaomi would make more units and provide official support here in Australia.

    • Where is the ear piece? Is it on the screen itself?

This thing has no side or top bezel. Do you hold the phone upside down when you take a call?

      • It's embedded underneath the screen towards the top. The proximity sensor is also embedded into the screen, and the front-facing camera and ambient light sensor are on the bottom bezel.

      • Earpiece is replace by new a technology — Cantilever piezoelectric ceramic acoustic. My understanding is the vibrating ceramic back/side generates sounds.

        • I didn't understand that at all.

So there is no cut-out in the screen for a speaker? The sound goes through the screen?

        • +1

          @lostn:
          According to Xiaomi
"Xiaomi MIX will use ceramic acoustic system instead of traditional receiver, it can take phone call without receiver by piezoelectric ceramic converting electrical signals into mechanical energy to create the voice itself."

and credit to thomasyoung of Whirlpool. Below is copy&paste from the post reply

          https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2577746&…

Not too much information. But below sounds interesting
          http://www.gizmochina.com/2016/10/25/xiaomi-reveals-concept-…

read the section after this picture.
          http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/xiaomi-…
However, with the display covering a majority of the body, there are some challenges that have to be overcome. For example, since the top is covered with display, where would you place the camera, ear piece and the proximity sensor?

So, the Xiaomi Mix will be using a cantilever piezoelectric ceramic technology which replaces the traditional ear piece. For proximity sensor, instead of a traditional infrared sensor, the phone will use a special ultrasonic sensor. And finally for the camera, the company says that the Mix could feature a camera at the bottom bezel, and you can rotate the phone to capture great selfies. Further, to increase the screen area, the company will be using virtual keys with 17:9 custom display.

piezoelectric ceramic technology. Squeezing certain material (apparently it's a ceramic here ) can make electricity flow through it.(and visa-versa). that is how xiaomi mix convert voice signal from/to electrical signal. And therefore replace the transitional ear piece and receiver.

      • No. Apparently you do that if you want to take a selfie. Camera is at the bottom.

  • +2

I have had this phone for about a month. I paid $1388 for the 6GB version (happ. Happy to answer any questions you may have. The B28 didn't seem to make a difference compared to my Nexus 6P.

If you're comfortable with flashing a custom recovery etc then I'd advise you to install the xiaomi.eu rom - it comes with Google play apps etc already and has a lot of improvements.

It's been my favourite phone to date!

    • Thanks for your suggestion. Very helpful.
I hope the AliExpress seller will do this for me.

One Question: Any accessories you would suggest?

      • +1

It's comes with a genuine faux leather case included in the box. Mix accessories are very rare. Most variety is found on aliexpress so be sure to order something early as shipping takes ages. Mostlh very cheap prices less $10.

A few tips so far: 1- for screen protectors, make sure its full screen coverage, as my glass only covers 80%, leaves uncovered screen border of about 1mm, very annoying as it takes away some of the effect of the bezeless screen.
2- case - though a nice "thick" black case is included. Suggest you get a clear case to show off the body and reduce the size a little more. I ordered an "imak" brand. Still waiting for it.

        Hope that helps.

        • thanks mate.
