  • Damn I wish I waited for this deal.
I pulled the trigger on the previous e470 deal

    • +2

Previous e470 deal is still really good compared to this. The i7 6500 is on par with the i5 7200 and the dedicated graphics isnt even that good.

      • +1

I did some researcgh and if I'm reading it correctly, the integrated is almost on par with that graphics card.
        Phew almost had buyers remorse

  • Lenovo and Radeon…what could possibly go wrong…

    • +1

I had plenty go wrong with my HP Pavilion and Radeon. Underbuilding thermal solutions is reasonably common in the laptop world.

      • +10

I think you missed the sarcasm…

    Special Terms

    Important:

Purchases made with coupon codes not advertised on Cashrewards may result in cashback not being paid.

      • Yes I did, the same page that I copied the above from https://www.cashrewards.com.au/lenovo

I'm happy to screen cap my page for you.

        But thanks for criticising first.

        • -1

Then surely you would see that it's listed?

        • +3

@Clear: It is listed NOW, after I posted. I still have the cached page open and am more than happy to screen cap it and send it to you.

          Edit 1
The page as it was PRIOR to posting:

          Edit 2
I was simply trying to point out that at the time of checking Cashrewards, the voucher was not listed. Thank you for pointing out that it is showing up now.

        • -3

@Tiggrrrrr: According to my screen cap it has 700% cashback

          https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/144344/44679/sc.jpg

Ok in all seriousness. A lot of people will shit on TA's deals and more specifically Cashrewards. They're the ones that upvote you and downvote me. It's very likely that you were too quick for CR to update ;)

        • +1

          @Clear:

Not sure why it didn't show up for Tiggrrrrr anyways, I remember clicking to CR nearly immediately after the deal was posted (maybe 1-2 minutes), and code showed up for me. Quite trivial anyways, lets just accept that you'll get cashback as the code is listed and get back to discussing the deal.

        • +1

@lyl: I probably jumped the gun as I clicked literally seconds after deal was posted (I have been trying to get a better laptop for my nephew).

As soon as Clear pointed it out and I hit refresh it came up with the voucher code. I'm happy he pointed it out because I got an extra 7% back! Well in 60days I assume.

  • As I'm still on the lookout for my daughter for uni upcoming, what are opinions on this for carrying (backpack), Photoshop, gaming.

I know it's not a "gaming laptop"- but would it hold up at all?

Her's is an odd degree, "games art & design". Heavier on the art, but tech side is also covered.

    Maybe? Or, no?

    • +1

      http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-R7-M360.142637.0.htm…

      It's not made for gaming. 11 frames per second on Fallout 4 @ 1366 * 768 resolution.
      22 FPS on Mad Max @ 720p
      22 FPS on Far Cry 4 @ 720p

Might be OK for some casual games (Minecraft) or older RTS titles like Dota or LoL.

      • I had a poke around & see the bottleneck…damn….I'm struggling to keep things below a grand.

        Oh well.

Thanks for the reply, & nice deal.

        :)

    • No, unless she is going to buy an external monitor. The display isn't great only 59% srgb.

    • +1

It's good value, but to get something of graphic design and gaming standard, you may have to spend double.
Weight starts from 1.9kg, which is not too bad. Being business grade, it is more likely to survive being carried around a lot.

Yes, odd degree. Being in the software/IT industry, I recommend your daughter ensures her degree has employment at the end of it. Everyone wants to do gaming nowadays, but few are lucky enough to make a career out of it.

  • How does this compare to the Dell inspiron deal on at the moment:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/279728
    7th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-7200U Processor (3M Cache, up to 3.1 GHz)
    Windows 10 Pro
    8GB Ram
    256GB SSD
    4GB AMD Radeon™ R7 M445 Graphics Card
    15"
    weight: 2.33kg
    $959

    • +4

For an extra $71 dollars the Dell is a no-brainer:

      • Bigger screen
      • DVD drive
      • Way better graphics card
      • Windows Pro
      • 7th gen CPU
        • If you were seriously worried about that, why wouldn't you just reformat and reinstall Windows?

        • Do you have a link on this issue?

        • +1

@dazweeja:do you actually think after you done that the problem is solved? Dont you think to install their driver/utilities? Don't you think it hidden in your low level hardware you cannot do anything to get rid off them except you detect and remove those thing? Let say I have too much worries/ concerns about this, but sorry I don't trust that China thing.

        • +5

Lenovo was modifying the firmware so even a fresh reinstall would be polluted with their crapware. Turned me off Lenovo for life.

          http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/08/12/lenovo_firmware_nast…

        • @nhand42: and they think they can remove it by format hard drive lol

        • +2

@dazweeja: Even a fresh install doesn't get rid of it sadly.

          https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20150812/11395231925/lenov…

        • @dazweeja: If a manufacturer puts stuff in the firmware or silicon you will never get rid of it, or know about it unless security experts catch it and reveal it publicly.
USA are probably bugging too, though they are more likely to only monitor it for genuine national security reasons.

        • -1

@joelmuzz: and I got -ve to say that matter! some guys are so funny

      • +7

Buying a 2.33kg laptop for hauling around uni is not a great idea IMO.

      • +1

        Way chunkier too

      • Difference will also be closer to $100 if you factor in cashback. As a student I prefer the smaller screen, so it's not a 'no-brainer' and depends on the needs of the user.

      • Thanks for the advice in the process of buying 2, one for my mum it will be her main computer so portability not an issue. Second one is for my daughter who will be going to uni she can deal with the extra weight!

      • +1

        Way better graphics card?

According to http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark…, the R7 M360 (lenovo) is ranked 239th.

        The R7 M445 isn't listed, but judging by the R7 M440 (244th) and the R7 M460 (236th)- performance seems on-par.

      • Yep, took the Dell deal!

        • check the touchpad- have been hating mine because of the touch pad

    • +2

The Dell is hands down a better deal.

  • Is RAM upgrade able to 16 gb?????and what about battery, how many hours will it last?

    • Their specs have:

      Up to 16GB, PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3L, non-parity, dual-channel capable, 2 x 204-pin SO-DIMM sockets
      Battery life 9 hours.

      • +1

Ok thanks for reply. would I be able to add another 8 gb RAM myself. Is it easy to open back cover and insert RAM??

        • +1

It should be something you can do yourself. I do not know if they are using 2 x 4Gb and taking up both sockets though. If this is the case (which it usually is), then you will need to buy 2 x 8Gb DIMMs. It's about $70 per DIMM. It's likely you can just replace 1 of them to get 12Gb RAM as well.

  • +2

Mine just arrived, bought for $710 under the the previous 20% off eBay deal. Love it though, upgraded from an e450 without the fhd screen and skylake processor.

  • im starting my own business and need a laptop. this one or the dell xps 15/13 or Dell Inspiron 15 5000?

    • +1

I don't see how having a business will make a difference; the question is that are you going to be going everywhere with your laptop? If so, go for xps since it has a much longer battery life.

      Otherwise, the e460 is sufficient.

  • +3

Remember, Lenovo has malware that even a fresh install can't remove. One they had last year allowed not just them, but anyone, to read your personal information on sites they claimed were secure.

I recommend not buying any of their products under any circumstances.

Gonna copy and paste my response.

It's not a maleware, but rather adware

Anything that compromises the security of your device for the company's profit is malware. It's adware AND malware.

Also, if they "stopped" activating Superfish, great, but why should we trust them? They've done it once, they'll be happy to screw us again to make a buck.

Sure, it might not be called 'Superfish', it might be something different, it might not even be software next time but backdoors in the hardware. But Lenovo has compromised user security for short term profit, and for that they should permanently lose everyone's trust. This wasn't some bug in software, it was something they added on purpose, that worked by allowing anyone to alter and read the content of HTTPS pages. Whether they knew that or were just negligent, it's unacceptable.

Hell, the fact that it had adware, security aside, should be a big enough problem.

Waiting for my refund for about a month for a order i cancelled, seems like they are not willing to refund, and delivery date for this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/274465 is now on January, so cancelled that one as well, therefore always pay by Paypal

The only reason to buy a Lenovo is so you can cry yourself to sleep every night.

  • +3

Lenovo has confirmed the eBay deal was a pricing/listing error but appear to be honouring the lucky buyers

How come they added more stock after it was pulled down initally?

    • Hi, we understand the concern about more stock being added for the deal which was a mistake. This occurred as an external party controls our feed into ebay and this was not managed properly from their end.
      Cheers!

Why can't Lenovo provide Australia the same deals they provide Canada like the below?

        Lenovo E470 - i3-7100U/8GB/1080P IPS/Intel HD 620/256GB SSD $577
        Lenovo E470 i7-7500U/8GB/1080P IPS/GTX 940MX/256GB SSD ~$700
        Lenovo E570 - i5-7200U/8GB/1080P IPS/Intel HD 620/256GB SSD $535
        Lenovo E570 - i7-7500U/8GB/1080P IPS/GTX 950m/256GB SSD ~$700

      • Hi there,
Can you comment on the adware, crapware and bloatware issue that has been brought up time and time again and proven by the community out there. If this is true why should we buy this laptop? Privacy is a major concern for everyone.

  • Just note that Lenovo mostly ships a lot from overseas and foremost advertises a 'ships in' time rather than estimated delivery to somewhat hide this.

I'm still crying over the missed t460s deal
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/271077

  • +7

I want to like this deal but can't.

I've been over in Canada visiting my brother and since I've been here the calibre of deals has been far superior.

You can find all the below on redflagdeals a similar website to ozbargain over here

    Lenovo E470 - i3-7100U/8GB/1080P IPS/Intel HD 620/256GB SSD $577 or I7 with GTX 940MX for ~$700
    Lenovo E570 - i5-7200U/8GB/1080P IPS/Intel HD 620/256GB SSD $535 or I7 with GTX 950m for ~$700
    Dell Inspiron i5559 i5 -6200/8GB/1080P/Intel 530/1TB $499
Dell Alienware 15 R3 - i7 6700HQ/8GB/1080P IPS/GTX 1070/1TB ~$1500 after coupons and cash back!!! I know they have heat issues and light bleed but damn….

Similar population, CAD vs AUD almost 1 for 1. we're closer to China so what's the go Dell and Lenovo?

You guys get some great deals for us on OzBargain and I highly doubt this would be bargaining power but it's nice to dream :D

    • maybe its abt tax rate, I m pretty sure US price is even cheaper

      • similar GST once averaged.

US is a different kettle of fish

    • AU = "screw-you-city". And they wonder why we buy overseas???

We OUGHT TO command better pricing, it just doesn't happen….Hmm.

Maybe the MP's get their pockets lined instead?

    • They are allowed to advertise pre-tax price in Canada unlike in Aus, so add 10% for comparison.

      • +1

The i7's are inclusive of tax as was the Alienware.

My bro bought an Alienware R3 with a quad core 6700hq and a 1070 GPU for $1500 after tax and rebates (Ebates similar to cashrewards). The same machine in Oz is $3,300, or without the sale that just finished roughly $2,500 (inc tax) here at the moment. That's a huge difference…

I should of included tax for the i3's and i5's but even with tax there is no comparison.

  • Can someone please tell me if the Lenovo "malware" is still an issue? I heard about the superfish thing a few years ago but I thought Lenovo had removed it from their laptops since?

    • -1

I asked the Associated guy above, but they didnt respond. I am guessing because it is still an issue. I am still surprised no legal action has been taken against Lenovo.

    • +6

No one bothered to reply because it's pretty much done and dusted last year. If you are talking about the Superfish incident,

      1. It's not a maleware, but rather adware
      2. It's not affecting ThinkPads, but IdeaPads and other consumer-grade laptops
      3. Lenovo stopped activating Superfish after news breakout last year, and have released an open source removal tool.

      See Lenovo's statements on it.

As of Lenovo Service Engine ("BIOS rootkit as Techdirt claimed"), here's Lenovo's statement. Again,

      1. It never affected ThinkPads. Only IdeaPads.
      2. BIOS updates from Lenovo removes/deactivates this "feature".

Note that most Lenovo deals on OzBargain are ThinkPads, their business laptops, and have never had these issues in the first place. Also, instead of asking the community (or the store rep, who probably works for the marketing department rather than engineering), you can easily google the information and do your own research.

      • +1

similar to the reddit hivemind - once something is repeated enough times(and upvotes) it's taken as fact rather than people clicking a few buttons and doing their own research.

        god help the next gen

use my w530 for like more than 3yrs never had this problem, but it aint water proof as thinkpad should be, I dropped one cup of water and motherboard dead ……

  • Very tempting, always wanted a thinkpad myself, but I've already got 2 laptops, cannot justify buying another :(

  • +1

Same spec machine comes to $1451NZD(1396AUD) on our end, can you see if your rep can do a similar NZ offer? I can book a return flight to sydney, pickup the laptop and fly home in Jan for only a few dollars more than buying local.

  • Thanks TA! Ordered!
I think this is an excellent laptop for my son who is starting High School next year.
    big +ve vote from me!

  • For this laptop, do i need add the ac adapter into the order which cost extra $46?

    • figured out, it is for spares. no need

  • Deal extended - Code is now SANTA
