cheaper than a macbook pro with the same specs

    • But No Final Cut Pro! OMG WHERE'S THE OPTIMISATION!

      • Is this laptop good for multimedia programs photoshop etc ? I plan on using this for unity or unreal engine.

        • +2

Should be perfect, however I don't like 15 inch screens for taking to uni as it's a bit large. That's personal preference though.

    • No USB-C or DisplayPort, so connectivity wise it comes up a bit short. Then again, nobody uses these and I'd say the SD card reader and Ethernet port make up for it in spades.

      • +7

But atleast it has USB ports!

      • but what makes up for it in clubs?

      • i mean usb c wont be standard for a while.

    • -6

Does this support Mac OSX properly? :(

    • I assume we're talking about the 15" Macbook Pro as it's similar size…
Dual core processor vs. Quad Core
      2.3 kg (min) vs. 1.83kg

Or we can compare to the 13".
      2.3 kg (min) vs. 1.37kg

  • +16

You should also be able to get 7.50% cashback at Lenovo using Cashrewards, which would be about $83.32.

  • +2

Specs are good, and I'm happy that Lenovo is continuing to produce laptops with removable/replaceable batteries - something that should be standard in all enterprise-grade or "pro" laptops IMHO.

    • +5

      This isn't a "business" laptop.

It's cheap and entry level. Most businesses that use Lenovo buy the T series (Thinkpads). Some of them have removable batteries, but most don't because the battery life is already very high (10+ hours). The internal battery is also easily replaced if the wear level is getting high.

      • -7

Lol @ calling an i7 "entry level"

        • +6

He's referring to the laptop in it's entirety. They are entry level laptops.

        • this particular i7 is entry level. might pay to look at the specs as not all i7's are created equally. This one is a dual core i7.. some 4 year old i5s will handily beat this

        • +5

The whole E series are entry level, designed as entry level, priced as entry level and built as entry level. Inserting an i7 doesn't change anything else, and a dual core i7 with number 500 at the end belongs to entry level too, maybe a tad better than other entry level i5 and i3, but still one of the weakest i7.
I have no idea why he got down votes for stating a fact.

        • +1

E series are indeed entry level. They are quite basic and nothing fancy at all. Just plastic covers in black, no touch screen no nothing.

        • +1

its like sticking a Gti Badge on a Suziki Alto

  • Any other laptop with the DEALS coupon with a faster CPU?

TA any news on this rumored 50% off sale for OzB's 10th birthday?
Or any date when details will be released? Much appreciated. This isn't a TA code, but have bought a few Lenovo's with your referral posts. Thanks again.

  • Need something with the i5 6300HQ

      Get a thinkpad t460

      • +1

got my t460s delivered the other day, absolute joy to use

  • Awesome specs for the price. Weight starts at 2.3kg though…

  • Thanks TA. I missed your deal the other week for just under $1000 so I'm definitely getting one of these.

  • Thanks for this. Will consider this even though I wanted to wait a bit longer through Xmas.

  • +4

SSD for no extra cost this time. Yes!

  • +1

I would pull the trigger on this, my question is, how noticable is it to go from a 17.3 down to 15.6, especially this model. Oh and the cooling, what's the cooling like in lenovo products?

    • you might want to look at the 15.6 Y series laptop. No SSD but it's a UHD screen which will fit more real estate on the screen. It is an extra 200$ but using cashrewards you should get about $80 back on top. Roughly 1320$ after cashrewards.

I'm not sure if you can replace the HDD with an SSD in these things.

      Anyone know?

I believe the CPU in the Y series gets a much higher benchmark score than this processor too. It also has a 4gb gfx card.

  • Will it be cheaper during ozbargain 10 years old sale?

  • Is it possible to cancel my order from the other deal and buy this one?

    • Not if they've already shipped it or if its entered manufacturing.

You can always return it and get a refund when it arrives.

  • +1

Can i buy it without Windows OS and DVD drive ? will i save anything ?

    • Doesnt seem like it. I tried the customize to downgrade to an i5 and no OS but it seems you can only upgrade specs.

Also the battery is only 4 cell.

      • Funny enough, exactly what might kill the deal for me - the OS and DVD drive.

        • Yeap same here, see no need for DVD drive.

        • @fenixforeva:

          can't downgrade anything unfortunately lol.

        • +1

@fenixforeva: You could remove it and make space for an extra HDD or SSD…

        • @klaw81: Had no idea, is this a thing with most laptops ?

        • +1

@fenixforeva: Yes, if your laptop has an optical drive its usually possible to remove it and replace it with a 2.5" hard drive or SSD in a caddy.

  • the SSD alone they are trying to sell for $499 http://www3.lenovo.com/au/en/accessories/storage%C2%A0%C2%A0… not sure why it's that price lol

  • Hey TA how do you get all these deals set up?

  • +1

Can any techies give me their thoughts.
Seems the Y50 laptop at $1399 is a better deal?
It's a 1TB HDD vs the SSD on this thing, but the GPU appears better and the CPU is faster. It also has a UHD screen.
Could the HDD be replaced with an SSD down the road? The CPU benchmark is much higher on the 4700 processor. Is that important ?
    Here is the Y50
    http://www3.lenovo.com/au/en/clearance-sale/LenovoY50-70AMBK…

Obviously there's still approx $300 difference between the two but is the Y50 a better overall buy?

    Thanks!

    • No stock of the Y50. Can't add to cart.

      • chat says you can backorder it. I'm just wondering what the better deal is.

        • +1

The CPU on the Y50, although 2 generations older is much faster due to it being quad core vs dual core (total 8 due to hyperthreading). I'd get the Y50 and replace the HDD down the road.

    • No trackpoint :(

  • Is this a decent gamimg/business laptop?

    • +1

950m was average over a year ago, it's really average now.

This is also a dual core which for $1000+ in a heavy 15" form factor is very expensive.

It can game, but the 1060 is more than 4x as powerful and can be found in laptops for a lot less extra $$$ for the increase in performance you will get (fps/dollar ratio).

The specs here are worse than the Dell Inspiron 7559 which sold for around the same price a year ago.

      • Appreciate your advice. Any recommendations?

      • Any links to better "gaming / light gaming" laptops for about the same price or under 1K?

        • +1

This is about the level of gaming performance you can expect for a laptop sub-$1000, unless you find a super special. 950M is good enough for medium details and 40fps in modern AAA games at 1080p, and quite a bit better if you dial it back to 720p.

The next step up from this model is probably the Acer Nitro and Inspiron 7559 (quad-core CPU rather than dual core, and 960M rather than 950M) but price jumps to $1200+. Lenovo offer the Y50 with similar spec but starts at $1400.

Laptops with current-generation GPU (ie GTX1060 or better) will have much higher gaming performance but start at around $2k.

        • @klaw81:

950m just can't cut it for 1080p even at medium details in modern games - it has trouble cracking 40fps on medium details even at 1366x768 on many even older titles as benchmarked in the link below.
          http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-950M.138026.…

It would be great for esports type games and extra GPU grunt for video editing/encoding, just very hard to recommend to someone who wants a gaming machine and this would be their only GPU or to someone who wants good price/performance.

In addition there are 1060 powered laptops for cheaper than $2000. Below is an i7 6700HQ (leaps and bounds ahead of the 7500U) with 16GB DDR4, 1060, 512GB SSD(!!!) and heaps more for $1800. It doesn't come with windows, but $25 and a reddit account fixes that.
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/263055

I'm leaning towards vote manipulation or a really uninformed community base with a hard on for certain posters for this deal to have been upvoted so highly. It's a bog standard Lenovo with no trim - about as far away from a status symbol or powerhouse as possible but has a price that reflects it should be something more.

        • +1

@c0balt: I agree that it's not a great gaming laptop, if you're a gaming enthusiast. But it's about as good as you can expect for around $1000 - 15" 1080p screens are still rare in sub-$1000 laptops, and even more so with SSD, discrete GPU and 16GB RAM.

That's an absolutely spectacular deal on the Metabox machine, but it's WAY more expensive than most people are willing to spend on a laptop so it's exclusively for gaming enthusiasts. It's a very different group of people to those who are looking at this deal.

I don't agree with your concerns about vote manipulation or an uninformed community, just a bunch of people with very different priorities and budgets. This is not a spectacular deal, but it's certainly a lot better than you'd ever get at your local Harvey Norman. In summary, a very decent laptop for general use, and capable of a bit of casual gaming on the side.

      • Hold up, where the hell did you get that price from? I can't even find the inspiron at anywhere near $1200, unless I decide to import it from the states.

        • Either significant discounts (eg. eBay 20% sales) or from the Dell Outlet

        • There's been many listings for that model on this site over the last year, here's one for ~$1100 with a quad core i5 and 960m GT.
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/257923

Note the RAM is easily expandable and has an empty M2. SSD slot, so for a little extra cash it can be a pretty damn good machine (if not best price/performance still) nearly a year after release.

        • @c0balt: Agreed, it's a very nice machine for relatively cheap and with some easy upgrades, it punches well above its weight. I got a refurb from the Dell Outlet for $900 so even with an extra 8GB RAM and a M.2 SDD it's still under $1100.

      • I'd be interested to know which laptops with 1060 graphics can be had for under $1100.

      • capable of doing some design work using photoshop, illustrator?

    • +2

No, it's a terrible business laptop.

      Get a thinkpad.

      • +3

        This is a thinkpad.

Do you mean a T series?

    • It's a bad business grade laptop not near the build quality of the X/T/ P series of ThinkPads.

It's a below average gaming laptop with only a 950M, which is adequate to run some modern day games on low-medium setting, but IMO a 960M would have been a far better option, and you could actually call it a dedicated gaming laptop.

It's a high end consumer grade laptop… That's what it is.

  • Any recommendations for a good laptop which isn't too bulky, doesn't get too hot and is good for photo/video editing and some gaming? Would prefer a SSD and preferably a UHD screen too, but no big deal if they don't have it. Though this is quite tempting at $1111, especially after cash rewards. Have been using a 7 year old Samsung laptop which is starting to slow down. Hopefully LENOVO will have some big bargains during the OzBargain sale especially for us.

    • +5

You need to spend over $2000 for that type of computer.

Dell Xps15 is probably your best bet.

    • The price and specs are indeed tempting, that's the lure about it. I believe this will be good enough for editing and some gaming(low-med settings). However I have been looking at metabox laptops and you are definitely going to get more bang for you buck there for around 2000. I have not found anyone that comes close to these guys, feel free to prove me wrong. Although at this point its a matter of preference.

The cons about it would be weight though, the XPS 15 would be a good option if you want portability.

  • Wondering if this thing throttles or if the cooling is sufficient when under load (e.g. gaming)

    • +3

The i7 7500U is piddly 15w TDP dual core and the 950m is a measly GPU.

It shouldn't put out much heat at all.

      • i7 7500U can be tuned by OEM from 7.5w up to 25W. Nominally it is 15W.

  • +1

This is a generic coupon code.
I would wait until TA's ozbargain specific code when it will probably be around $900

  • Been trying to look at their other singles week specials but every time I click the link Singles Week Specials on their homepage
I get the following error "The www3.lenovo.com page isn’t working www3.lenovo.com redirected you too many times". Anyone else have this issue? Tested on multiple browsers.

    • Working fine here on Win8.1/IE11

  • +1

A VGA port, wow. Wasn't expecting to see one of those.

    • Sadly a huge number of businesses still rock VGA-only monitors and projectors. A significant number of incompetent IT managers will know of VGA as the ONLY way to carry video.

It's more ironic that even after skylake (6th gen) dropped VGA, manufacturers are probably using a displayport to VGA adapter in the motherboard to support it.

  • +1

Hi harro112 - could you share specs of your T460S, how much it cost, did you go online or bought it through a sales rep and if through a sales rep then his/her details please? How are you finding it and did you consider T460 as an option?

  • VGA output and a dvd drive?, what year are we in?

    • It comes with Windows XP CD.

  • I know I will be downvoted for this. But I'll still be blunt. And for the record I am using a ThinkPad X220 still, a 2011 laptop-

As everyone else said this is nowhere near a classic ThinkPad build quality. You would be getting a sheep (IdeaPad) in a wolf's clothing (ThinkPad) if you are strictly after a business grade not just a medium range consumer grade laptop. The build quality of this is very flimsy much like any other medium end consumer grade laptop that just happens to have a ThinkPad branding and a track point. And AFAIK Lenovo doesn't claim military grade testing for the E series that it does so proudly for the X and the T models.

Only look into the X, T and P (formerly W) series if you are after a business grade ThinkPad that is build to last. These series were started by IBM and still carry some of the quality from the golden IBM days.

Otherwise you are better off getting a consumer grade laptop without paying without paying an excess just for the ThinkPad logo. Same applies for the ThinkPad 13/ L / Yoga series.

  • Lenovo still hasn't shipped mine and are now quoting early January :(

    • +1

Same.. ordered Nov 10, while I am sure I read 6-9 business day processing the tracker eventually listed Nov 30 as likely ship date.
Closer to the ship date I queried and they emailed manufacturing to expedite but the date blew out further .. follow-up I got the below offers.. none to me seem worth the downgrade but may be of interest to others.

    • When my delivery started showing December 12, cancelled it straight away, plus these rats charged my debit card twice ($1111 each time) saying authorization lasts only four days but bank was still holding on to my money. Still waiting for my refund of $708 for another order i cancelled at the beginning of last month. Lenovo simply wont refund, Better to stay away from these rats in my opinion
